This invention relates to a jar wrench, and it is a particular object of the invention to provide a device of this kind which can be employed to advantage is either loosening or tightening screwable caps, such as used in connection with fruit jars, bottles, etc.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind which can be readily adjusted for use in connection with caps of various sizes and wherein the laws are also so constructed as to permit the tool to be employed to advantage in the removal of rubber gaskets and the like.
The invention also has for an object to provide a device of this kind constructed and assembled in a manner to allow the same to be put to various uses other than the loosening or tight;- ening of caps.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of our improved jar wrench whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use. as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of our invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed. I
In order that our invention may be the better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a jar wrench constructed in accordance with an embodiment of our invention;
Figure 2 is a view in bottom plan of the device as illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view in elevation taken at the side of the wrench opposite from that illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-8 of Figure 1;
Figure 6 is a view in top plan of a plate herein employed and unapplied;
Figure 7 is a view in side elevation of the plate as illustrated in Figure 6.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, A denotes an elongated shank which is substantially U-shaped in cross section and comprises.
a back or intermediate wall I and the side walls 2 and 3. The free longitudinal margin of the wall 2 is provided therealong substantially its entire length with an inwardly disposed flange 4. The forward end portion of the wall 3 is transversely enlarged to provide a plate 5 and this plate 5 projects a slight distance beyond the adjacent end of the shank A proper to provide 5 an offset jaw 6.
The working edge of this jaw 6 is substantially at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the shank A and is disposed on a slight inward curvature with the working margin of the jaw 10 formed to provide gripping teeth I. It is to be noted that the working edge of this jaw 6 is formed to provide an outer sharp corner 8 for a purpose to be hereinafter more particularly referred to.
I u snugly but slidably engaging within the shank A between the side walls 2 and 3-thereof is the movable shank B also U-shaped in cross section and comprising an intermediate wall 9 and the side walls l0 and II. The wall of the shank B has close contact with the wall 3 of the shank A while the wall III of the shank B has close contact with the wall 2 of the shank A with the intermediate plate 9 of the shank B underlying the flange 4 of the shank A. The free longltudinal margins of the walls I0 and II have close contact with the intermediate wall I of the shank A whereby the intermediate wall 9 of the shank B is materially spaced from the intermediate wall I of the shank A.
The inner surface of the intermediate wall 9 of the shank B has formed a major distance therealong the rack teeth I2 with which engages the outer or free pointed extremity of a pawl l4. This pawl I4 is pivotally supported. as at I5, by and between the inwardly disposed side flanges I6 defining the longitudinal side margins of an elongated lever II.
This lever I! is disposed rearwardly and longitudinally of the shank A and the forward portions of the flanges l6 of the lever II are pivotally engaged, as at I8, withthe outstanding ears I! provided at the opposite sides of a slot 2|! provided in the forward portion of the wall I of the shank A.
The pawl I4 is directed through'thisslot 2' and is constantly urged in a direction for proper engagement with the rack teeth l2 through the medium of a spring 2|. As herein disclosed, the spring 2| has one end portion bearing against 5 the lever I I with its opposite end portion bearing against a lateral extension 22 carried by the pivoted extremity of the pawl I4. An intermediate portion of this spring 2| is coiled, as at 28, around the pintle I5. While this spring 2| l6 operates to urge the pawl l4 toward the intermediate wall 9 of the shank B it also serves to urge the lever II in a direction away from the shank A. However, upon depression of the lever ll, or swinging movement of said lever toward the shank A, the pawl l4 will cause the shank B to move inwardly of the shank A to a predetermined distance and, of course, the extent of such inward movement of the shank B will be determined by the proper manipulations of the lever l'l.
The side wall ll of the shank B is continued by a. forwardly or, outwardly directed plate 24 which is so formed to be at its outer portion of a width substantially equal to the width of the Jaw 8.; This plate 24 is formed to provide a reverted jaw ll inwardly offset with respect to the plate 24 sufllciently to bring the jaw 25 into a position substantially coplanar with the jaw 8. a
The working edge of the jaw 25 is also disposed on an inward curvature and said edge or margin is'provided with the gripping teeth 26. The outer corner of the working edge of the jaw 26 is also pointed, as at 11, for coaction with the pointed corner I of the law as will hereinafter be more particularly referred to.
The plate 24 and the adjacent portion of the well H of the shank 'A hav pressed outwardly therefrom the strengthening or reinforcing rib 28 The rear extremity of the intermediate plate 9 of the shank Bhas struck outwardly therefrom aiug 2! for contact with a stop lug 30 suitably positioned at the rear pontlon of the plate 5.
This stop lug 34, in the present emmdiment of 0minvention, is struck from the inner lower corner of a plate 8| held to the inner face of the plate by the suitably positioned screws 32. This plate 3i has a lower or inner straight edge .13 which, when the plate Ii is applied, closely of the plate II and which arm is disposed transversely of such plate II.
The plate 3| is also formed to provide a cutting blade 3' extending across the U-shaiped arm 35 and in desired spaced relation with respect thereto. This blade at is of a type used in the opening of cans or kindred sheet metal containers.
The outer rear portion of the plate 3| also carn'es a, pair of disks 5'! to be employed in the sharpening of knives and to facilitate the desired use of these disks 31, the plate 3| is notched or recessed alt I8 to allow eifective engagement of a knife with said members 31.
The inner lower portion of the plate 5 is' disposed on a suitable curvature, as at 3!, for coaction with a rearwardly disposed'hook member 40 formed on the plate 3! whereby the device can be eifeotively employed in the removing of bottle caps and the like.
I Overlying the lower forward portion of the plate 3! and held thereto by certain of the screws 32 is a block 4| which, as herein disclosed, constitutes a pencil sharpener. The forward portion of this block 4| below the free end portion of the arm II hereinbefore referred to.
.-'- The rear portion of the shank A has pivotally engaged with the intermediate wall I thereof a disk 42 carrying a plurality of glass cutting wheels 43. By proper rotation of the disk 42 the cutting wheels 43 may be selectively caused to extend beyond the adjacent end of the wall I.
This rear end position of the shank A has plvotally engaged therewith a guard 44 which, when in one position, extends across the rear end of the shank A to aflord protection against injury by a pmiecting cutting wheel 43.
It is believed to be Went from the foregoing that upon manipulation the shank B may be readily drawn outwardly with respect to the shank A in order to allow the laws 8 and 25 to be used in connection with screw caps of various sizes. It is also believed .to be apparent that upon manipulation of the lever II the shank B will be moved inwardly of the shank A to cause desired efiectivc clamping of the cap between the jaws 6 and 25.
As is well known, it is the general custom to employ in connection with screw caps a sealing gasket having a projecting lip. To facilitate the removal or breaking of this gasket, this project- 1113 lip can be readily engaged between the points I and 21 of the Jaws I and 25, respectively.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a jar wrench constructed in accordance with our invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and 0p erated, and it will also be obvious that our invention is susceptible of some change and mod-iiication without depamting from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the 'precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out our invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
We claim:
A Wrench 01' the character described, comprising an elongated handle shank shaped from a single sheet of material and of substantially U- shaped cross-section including side plates and an intermediate plate, one side plate being extended at one end longitudinally of the shank beyond the other plate and the intermediate plate and being widened through a portion of its length, the said extended and widened portion having its forward edge formed to provide a. jaw, a shiftable shank of substantially equal length to and slidably mounted in the handle shank and shaped from a single sheet of material and of substantially U-shwped cross section including side and intermediate plum, the side plates of the shiftable shank being disposed against the inner sides or the other side plates and the intermediate plates being in spaced relation, a side plate of the shiftable shank being longitudinally extended at the end adiacent said jaw and shaped to form a jaw coacting with the first jaw, a plate secured against the inner face of the said widened portion of said handle shank side plate and having an edge engaging the adjacent side plate of the shif'table shank to retain the shank-s in sliding assembled relation, a handle pivot/ally carried on the handle shank, a rack extending lengthwise of the inner side of the shiftable shank intermediate plate, and a spring pressed pawl pivotally attached to the handle and extending through an opening in the intermediate plate of the handle shank for engagement with said rack to effect relative movement of the shanks and jaws an oscillation of the handle.
