Description
E. W. TERRY. IrOning-Board.
No. 223,615. Patented Jan. 13, I880.
ILPETERS, PHUTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON, D, C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN W. TERRY, OF KALAMAZOO, MIDHIGAN.
lR ONlNG-BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,615, dated January 13, 1880.
Application filed March 7. 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN W. TERRY, of the village and county of Kalamazoo, and State of Michigan, have invented an Improved Adjustable Ironing-Board, of which the foL lowing is a specification.
The object of my invention is the construction of an ironing-table the top of which may be taken off and replaced again easily and quickly at will of the user. A Y
My object, also, is the construction of other shaped table-tops, such as draftsmen and scholars in writingc1ass,&c., use, said tops to be adjusted to the same style of frame by the same mechanical contrivance as provided for the ironing-board.
The utility of tables constructedin this manner is that they can be taken apart and stored away when not in use more conveniently than other styles, and also the legs and frame and top, respectively, may be used for other purposes.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 shows the table folded up, looking on the un-. der side or face; and Fig. 2 is a side view, showing cross -legs and edge of the board when table is unfolded and standing upright.
The construction of the device embodying my invention consists in a board shaped in the usual form of ironing-boards. (Seen at B.) On the under face of said board B, about onefourth its length from the narrow end, I secure a cleat, C, said cleat having two beveled notches or mortises on its inner edge and face next to the board B, into which bars F F are inserted, the position of said notches on the cleat G and their bevel being illustrated at G in Fig. 2, where bar F is seen to fit into it.
A little distance from the opposite end of board'B, on its under face, I secure a plain cleat, D, and a little removed from it toward broad end of board I secure a button, E, by means of a screw extending through it into board B. Hence the novelty of my boards rests not in their shape, but in being provided with the specified cleats and button, constructed and located as specified.
The frame, which forms a prominent'fea ture of my invention, I construct with two parallel bars, F F, connected together the proper distance apart by means of end bars, 0 and H, Fig.1, the latter of which has a semielliptictmortise in its outer edge, into which the button E shuts when securing the board Bto the frame. In the under edge or face of bars F F notches n are formed, for the purpose of holding up said end of frame by means of crosslegs A. By having more than one notch the height of the table is governed. Heretofore these notches have been formed in the board B or in one of the crosslegs. The ends of bars F beyond notches n are beveled to fit into beveled notches or mortises. (Shown at C, Fig. 2.)
To support my frame Iconstructfour crosslegs similar to those frequently in use; but instead of hinging them to the board B, I connect them to bars F F by means of knucklejoints h h. (Shown by dotted lines at h, Fig. 2.)
In Fig. l the top B is shown to be adjusted to the frame by means of the ends of bars F F being inserted in beveled notches or mortises, as illustrated at 0, Fig. 2, and button E shutting into the semi-elliptic mortise in bar H.
To remove the board B, the button E is opened to position indicated by dotted lines at e in Fig. 1, when the top B may be raised from the frame. I
What I claim as new, and desire to secure, 1s-
1. A table-top provided with cleat C, having beveled mortises, as specified, cleat D, and button E, the table-frame consisting of bars F F, with beveled ends, notches a, bar H, with semi-elliptic mortise, and bar 0, andithe four cross'legs, two of them hinged or jointed to bars F F at h h, and the other two engaging notches n, all combined, constructed, and arranged substantially as specified and shown, p
for the purposes set forth.
2. Combined with a tabletop provided with cleat 0, having beveled mortises, as specified, cleat D, and button E, the table-frame consisting of bars FF, with notches n and beveled ends, bar H, with semLelliptic mortise, and bar 0, all constructed and arranged as specified, for the purposes set forth.
EDWIN W. TERRY.
