SHOE PROTECTOR Filed Nov. '7, 1939 Patented Mar. 18, 194i 1 Claim.

This invention relates to devices in the nature of spats for covering and protecting a. shoe or a part thereof, and in the preferred form extending above the shoe and protecting the wearers ankle.

It is the general object of my invention to provide an improved construction in a shoe protector, by which the protector may be conveniently secured to a shoe and as easily removed il@ therefrom.

A further object is to provide improved attaching means for a shoe protector. one part oi' which forms a permanent part of the shoe and another part of which forms an edge portionoi the protector.

I also provide eiiective means for' holding the heel portion of the protector in close association with the heel of the shoe, and for detachably securing the iront and heel portions of the protector together.

My invention further relates to arrangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim;

A. preferred form of the invention is shown in the drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation oi my improved protector applied to a shoe;

Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation, taken along'the line 2 2 in Fig. 1;

Figs. 3 and e are partial sectional elevations, taken along the lines 8-3 and 4 4 respectively in Fig. v1; and

Fig. 5 is a partial side elevation of the protector separate from the shoe.

Referring to the drawing! have shown a low shoe 8 oi' usual construction and having an outsole i6, insole Il. upper I2 and heel i4.

My improved shoe protector 20 'in the preferred form comprises a iront or toe portion 2| and a rear or heel portion 22, and is designed to cover and protect the entire upper part ot the shoe B and also the ankle of the wearer.

The rear' portion 22 oi the protector is designed to wrap around the heel oi the shoe and is preferably secured .to the iront portion 2| at.' one side-of the shoe by a detachable or so-called zipper" fastening 24. An elastic band or spring 25 is also preferably provided around the lower edge of the heel portion 22, whereby said lower edge is drawn snugly against-the heel ot the *shoe and is maintained in close engagement therewith.

For securing the iront portion 2i of my shoe protector to the iront portion oi the shoe, I provide a detachable or zipper fastener, one part ot which forms the lower edge of the portion 2iof the protector 2i? and the other part of which forms the outer edge of a band or strip 32 which is assembled with the shoe in the process of manufacture and which is preferably stitched between the upper l2 and the outsole lil, thus 5 forming a permanent part of the shoe.

With this construction, my improved shoe Vprotector may be quickly and easily applied to a shoe by passing the heei portion 22 around the heel of the' shoe and closing the fastening 10 24, and by thereafter securing the two parte ci the detachable fastening 3B along the shui: and around the toe portion of the shoe. f.

A spring or elastic hand 3S may also be provided, which extends under the shank of the shoe 15 A to the line X in Fig. 1, thus covering only the 20 front part of the shoe.

With my improved construction it will be seen that the front Portion 2| or my protector is iirmly attached around the entire shank and toe portion ofthe shoe, sothat the be held nrmly and smoothlyv over the shoe and that no gaps or openings can appear along the edges thereof. mirthermore, the heel portion 22 is closely secured to the iront portion 2i and is firmly engaged with the heel ot the shoe, so 30 that satisfactory contact between the protector and the shoeiseiectedinallperts.

Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to he limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than 35 as set forth in the claim, but what I claim is:

In footwear, in combination. a complete shoe having apermanent upper and having an attaching band amxed to said shoevand extending continuously from. the shank of the shoe for- 40 ward along one side of the shoe and around the toe portion oi' the shoe'snd rearward along the other side of the shoe to lthe shank, sa/idband being secured between the permanent upper and the outsole of the shoe and forming a perma- 4 nent but inconspicuous part of the shoe, and a detachable shoe protector having a cooperating attaching structure forming al continuous lower edge for said protector and coacting with said attaching band throughout its length to 50 detachably but closely and continuously secure said protector to said shoe from the shank of said shoe at one side around the toe portion of the shoe to the shank of' the shoe on the other protector may 25
