SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 223,499, dated January 13, 1880.
Application filed August 9, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. FREEMAN, of Amboy, in the county of Lee and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Refrigerator-Crates, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a plan of the open crate, showing the boxes and ice-crib in position. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the closed crate on line 00 m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan of the false bottom within the crate. Fig. 4 represents, in perspective, view of a box and cover designed for holding butter.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple, convenient, and inexpensive refrigerator-crate for transporting butter, fruits, meats, game, 850.; and the invention consists in providing a rectangular wooden box having a zinc lining, the space between which and the outside is filled with charcoal or other good nonconductor, with a cover having an L-shapcd block to hold the ice-crib firmly in place, and with a removable perforated and grooved false bottom that supports a removable ice-crib which has in wardly-inclined metallic dripslats secured to its corner-posts to prevent the ice-water from dropping outward upon the articles packed in the crate, as hereinafter fully described.
I In the drawings, A represents the crate, havin g metallic lining a. Bis the space between the lining and the outside of the crate, filled with a good non-conductor of heat. C is the ice'crib, open at top and bottom, and provided with the inwardly-inclined slat-s b. D is the false bottom, provided with perforations c and grooves cl, for the discharge of the ice-water, and with legs f, to raise it from the floor of the crate. g is the drip-orifice; h, the plug fitting it, and t" the metallic plate to prevent the accidental removal of the plug. E is the inner cover of the crate, provided with block F, for holding theice-crib in position when the cover is closed, and G is the outer cover of the crate. H H representboxes that may be used for holding articles in transportation.
When used for transporting articles the ice-crib is preferably placed in the center of the crate, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the articles to be transported packed around it; but when devoted to family use the crib may be set in one corner of the crate, its legs ontering the sockets 0 in the false bottom, and
its lower edges the grooves d, so thatit shall ters Patent- 1. The cover E, provided with the L-shaped block F, having notches q, in combination with the ice-crib O, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The false bottom D, provided with perforations c, grooves d, and sockets 0, in combination with the ice-crib O, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination with a refrigerating-crate, the cover E, provided with the block F, the icecrib 0, having inwardly-projecting lips b, and the false bottom D, provided with perforations o, grooves d, and sockets 0, substantially as shown and described.
