HARVESTERKNIFE GRINDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 223,449, dated January 13, 1880. Application filed septembci 30, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JAMES N. PARKER and JOHN F. WEBSTER, of Elkhart, in the county of Elkhart, State of Indiana, have invented certain useful Improvements in Barvester-Knife-Grinding Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the drawings hereto appended.
This invention relates to a machine for grinding or sharpening harvester-knives, and designed also for a general grinding-machine for the agriculturist. Heretofore such machines have been constructed and arranged to only grind the one side of the.V or triangular formed bevel-edged mower and reaper knives at a time, which materially impaired their cutting efficiency,' for the reason that the two sides cannot be ground the same bevels or angles by such devices.
In our invention we embody elements necessary to grind or sharpen the V or triangular formed beveled edges simultaneously by means of adouble-beveled-faced grinding-wheel, and a gravitating pivoted arm carrying the wheel, and a pivoted upright stud for attaching the arm and gearing mechanism, which will be more fully described hereinafter.

A represents the bed or platform, hating the guides K, upon which is placed the movable table H, having the clamping-dog N, for securing. the knives to table while being ground, and the handle M, for actuating the table for ward to and backward from the grindingwheel.
Mounted upon and at one end of the platform A is pivoted the upright skeleton-stand B, having one of its lugs, B, slotted, admitting of the grinding-wheel D being shifted in an angular position, to be employed when used for grinding the reapenknifc, or, when one of the sides of the cutters becomes badly nicked, to level the surface before grinding both sides simultaneously.
At the upper end of stand B are pivoted the gravitating arm 0 and the gear E. The pivot connecting the arm 0 and stand B' is provided with the thumb-nut O, for the purpose of adjusting the wheel D in any position and regulating the cuttingprcssure of grinding wheel. At the other end of the arm 0 is the grinding-wheel D, securely located upon a mandrel running in suitable boxes on the arm C. At one end of the said mandrel is located the pinion F, meshing into the gear E.
The locating of the wheels E F at the ends of the arm 0 is for the purpose of admitting of the arm (3 and wheel D being used in any position,iorward or back, without disengaging the said wheels, as, the pinion being radially located and its carrying-arm being pivoted at the center of the gear E, the said arm 0 and wheel D can be revolved around the gear E, while the wheels E and F will remain meshed.
In grinding, the V or triangular formed openings, with a double-beveled wheel, causes an up-and-down movement of the grinding-wheel, as when the wheel enters the widest partof cutter the grinding-wheel D is grinding relatively on its smallest diameter, and as the knife is moved forward toward the apex of the angle it is grinding at its relatively largest diameter, therefore causing an upward movement of the wheel D, and when drawn from the wheel D the wheel D and arm 0 will gravitate.
To prevent the wheel D and arm G from gray'itatin g, when desired, frictional resistance is produced between the jaws of the stand B on the arm 0 by means of the thumb-uut O.
In grinding the mowerknife, the knife G is placed upon the movable table H, and held rigidly thereto by a suitable clamp, N, and the cutting-edges G made to coincide with the bevels of the wheel, and then, motion being imparted to the grinder D by means of the gearing mechanism, the table II is moved forward and back until sufficiently ground or sharpened.
When grinding the reaper-knife, the same is placed lengthwise and slightly diagonal with the stand B, shifted so that one end can enter the opening in stand. While being moved to and from the grinder D, remove the beveled wheel and substitute a flat one therefor, as the said knives require to be ground on their flat surface over the beveled cuttingedges, instead of into the beveled edges, as the mower-knives are.
