rz'chims. (c1. 3H3) This invention relates to a shaving device, and
refers more particularly to an electrically operated shaver.
1 Electrical shavers now in use often cut the 6 skin of the user and are rather inconvenient to handle, since they must be always held in a predetermined positionrelatively to the skin.
An object of the present invention is to diminish or eliminate the danger of injury to the person lfi -shaving himseli with an electrical shaver,
Another object is the provision of an electrical shaver having a yieldable resilient and/r elastic support interposed between the cutting means and the handle for the purpose of adjusting the i pressure exerted upon the sldn in the course of the shaving.
A further object is the provision'of a shaver *the cutting means of which may by easily and freely moved over the skin of the user.
20. A still further object is the provision of a shaver the cutting means of which may be inclined-at any desired angle to the handle, thereby facilitating the holding of the device in the course of the'shavlng.
25 The above and other objects of the present invention may be realized through the provision of a shaver the cutting means of which are separated from the handle portion containing the driving means by an elastic and/or resilient element cono sisting,= for example, of a rubber support or a pneumatic support. This element has preferably the form of a cylinder, which is adjustably mounted in the handle so that the cutting means may be inclined at any desired angle relatively u to the handle.
The cutting means comprise preferably an outer mtatably mounted cylinder provided with periorations co-operating with a'recip'rocable outting device which is supported within the a cylinder and which shaves or: the beard extende ing' through these perforations- The invention will appear more clearly from the following detailed description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,
' 4 showing by way of example preferred embodiments of the inventive idea.

'nected by wires or and 24 with terminals or T prongs 25 and 28 may be connected electrically by bolts :1 and u to the casing u. The con- 40 ducting plates 12 and 34 are fixed upon-an insulating plate 89 by the bolts 4|, the plate 39 being 4i and 42, which also extend'through another tempted flow or the electrical current, is con- 5 [from the other; thereby establishing a make and- -.The shaver shown in Figures 1 to 8 01' the 10' drawings comprises a casing or handle portion ii consistingof two elongated shells l2 and- 13 which are provided with projections or ear-portion's l4 (Figs, 1, 2 and 6). These'projections are provided with-openings for the bolts Ii (Fig. '1 6) which hold together the two'halves oi the casing Ill. The projections l4 are so located that the middle portion of the casing i-i maybe con- The casing H contains a driving mechanism which is generally designated by the numeral 20 and a cutter which is generally designated by the numeral 21 and which projects in part outside of the casing and is adjustable relatively thereto. 1
with the terminals carried by a plug 2l, which is preferably made or rubber and which is connected to a source of electrical energy by a wire orcord29..
Thecoiifl is connected by means of a wire ii to a conducting plate 32, while the coil 10 ls'connected by the wire a to a similar plate 34.
Two magnetic pola I5 and ll are connected attached. to the magnets SI and II by the bolts insulating plate I situated 'on the opposite side 4 of the magnets SI and It (Fig. 4)
Each of the plates I2 and 34 is integral with an elongated conducting bar 4.3 or 4d (Fig. 2); a'condenser used to-provlde a smooth uninnectedw'lththetwobarsll and 44.
-A resilient conducting spring ll is connected at one end with the adjacent end or the bar 43. A similar conducting spring 41 is situated opposite the spring and is connected to the member 44. The o'pposite-endsoi the springs 48 and 4-1 carry contacts 48 and 4|, which may be brought into engagement withjeach other or separated one break connection and making the device available for use with direct current, as well as alternating current.
'A hollow-shaft 50, has an oval or ellipsoidal portion l1, which is situated between the springs 45 and 41 and is in engagement with insulation pieces 5|, carried by these two springs. I
The shaft 58 carries the armature 52, which is rotatable along with the shaft and which is situated between opposed ends of the two poles 85 and 85,
As shown more clearly in Figure 4, washers 53 and 54 enclose the shaft 50, one end of which carries a starting wheel 55. A portion of the wheel 55 is situated close to an opening 55 provided in the casing I I, so that the starting wheel 55 may be conveniently operated by the user.
As shown in Figures 2 and 4, a driving member 51 is mounted upon a pivot 58 and is oscillatable around that pivot. The lower portion of the member 51 is bifurcated and comprises two prongs 58 and 50, which embrace an eccentric portion I8 of the shaft 50.
The upper portion of the member .51 has the form of a leaf spring 5|, which is provided with one or more folds 82 used to supply additional metal whenever the spring 8| is extended.
The cutting device generally designated by the numeral 2| comprises a stand 53 having two opposed rounded supporting portions 84 and 55. A roller 58 is rotatably mounted in suitable cut-out portions provided in the supports 84 and 85. The roller 88 comprises a plurality of openings 81 through which the beard extends immediately prior to the cutting operation.
A cutter 58 is snugly fitted within the roller 88. The cutter 68, which is shown separately in Figure '1, has the form of a cylinder, one half of which is comparatively thin and is provided with diagonal cutting slots 58. The lower non-perforated part 10 of the cylindrical cutter 58 is much thicker and is provided with a slot 1| containing the end 12 of a hook 13, the opposite end of which is mounted at 14 upon the upper end of the I spring 5|.
The stand 58 is provided with slots 15, 15a and 8| through which the spring 5| and the hook 18 extend.
The support 85 is hollow and carries a threaded cap 15, which is also hollow and which comprises a chamber containing a coiled spring 11. One end of the spring 11 presses against a recess formed in the cap 16, while the opposite end of the spring 11 presses against one end of the cutter 68. i
The stand 53 is carried by a rubber cylinder 18, which is enclosed by a metallic casing 80. The rubber cylinder 19 which is provided with the central slot 8|a, may enclose hollow chambers or pockets 82 and filled with compressedair or any other suitable fluid.
and 82. (Fig. 5) which may be engaged by the ends of the set-screws 88 and 84 (Figs. 3 and 8). The set- screws 88 and 84 are situated within cutout portions of the casing II and may be conveniently manipulated by hand to adjust the po- 5 sition of the cutting mechanism 2|.
It is apparent that due to the described arrangement the cutting mechanism 2| may be rotated to the extent of about 60 or 90 relatively to the casing II and may be fixed in any suitable inclined position in relation to the casing. In order to change the posltionof the cutting device 2 I, it is merely necessary to unscrew the bolts 88 and 84, set the cutting device 2| as desired, and then insert the setescrews'88 and 84 into those cavities ill and 82, which are situated opposite the ends of the set-screws. Then the cutting device 2| is held firmly in the desired position.
Due to the rotation of the cutting device 2| the spring 8| may be somewhat extended, the fold 82 of. thespring 8| being used to provide any additional required metal.
- The device is operated as follows:
If the armature 52 is in its neutral position in 25 sary for the user to turn the wheel 55,- in order to start the device.
The electrical current supplied through the wire 28 and the plug 28 reaches the terminals 25 and 28 and energizes the field coils 22 and 88 through the wires 28 and 24, thereby causing a magnetization of the poles 85 and 88. I The current is transmitted to the make-and- break connection 48, 48 through the wires 8| and", the plates 82 and 84, the bars 48 and 44 and the springs 48 and 41. The armature 52 will rotate along with the shaft 58 due to the magnetization of the poles 85 and 88 and the make-and- break connection 48, 48 will. make it possible to cause the operation of the device with direct current as well as with alternating current.
The prongs 58 and of the oscillatable driving member 51 which are mounted upon an eccentric portion I8 of the shaft 58 will oscillate around thepivot 58 in the directions of the arrows shown in Figure 2. Since the hook 18 is firmly connected with the spring 5| of the driving memher 51, the'end 12 of the spring will reciprocate in the direction of the central axis of the cutter 88.
When the end 12 is moved toward the support 85, the cutter 88 will compress the spring 11. when the end 12 is moved in the opposite direc- -tion, the compressed spring 11 will be released and will move the cutter 88 toward the support 55 84. Due to this arrangement, the cutter 88 will carry out small rapid strokes within the roller 84 and the sharp edges of the slots 88 will cut the hair extending through the openings 81 and 88.
Due to the adimtability of the cutting device 60 I 2|, the shaver is convenient and easy to handle. Since the cylinder 88 may roll in the course of the shaving, the movement of the cutting device over The provision of the elastic and/or resilient support- 55 ing member 18, which may consist of a rubber .cylinder or an inflated pneumatic chamber, will further the smoothness of the shave and will prevent the cutting of the skin.
Figure 9 shows a modified cutter construction, 7
- the openings |88a of the cutter |88a converging toward the outer surface of the cutter.
Figure 10 shows a modified form of a roller I88 the op rnings I81 of which diverge in the direction toward the exterior of the roller and consist actu- 78 I operating the same, and mechanical means carshown above have been given by way of illustra tion and not by Way of limitation, and that the structures above described are subject 'to wide variation and modification without departing from the scope or intent of the invention, all of which variations and modifications are to be included within the scope of the present invention.
