NURSING DOLL Filed Nov. 25, 1955 IN VENTOR.
Jkca Brock mrw ATTORNEYS Patented Jan. 21, 1941 UNITED STATES NURSING DOLL Jacob Brock, Brooklyn,
N. Y., assignor to American Character Doll 00., Inc., New York, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application November 23, 1935, Serial No. 51,237
Claims.
This invention relatesto dolls and has particular reference to an improved doll structure which is capable of simulating the operation of drinking from a nursing bottle.
The invention comprehends a doll including a hollow body having a mouth opening so contoured as to receive the nipple of a nursing bottle therein and the gravitational discharge therein of the liquid from the nipple of the nursing bottle, while permitting of the escape of the air from the body of the doll and the displacement of the air by the liquid.
The invention further provides a doll having a hollow body constructed of resilient material and having arms and legs so constructed and connected therewith as to render the joints air and Water tight in order that the body may also serve as means for producing a suction for drawing liquid from a nursing bottle inserted in the mouth of the doll and as a receptacle for receiving the liquid.
The improved doll also includes a conduit connected with the mouth of the doll and extending into the hollow body thereof for conveying k liquid into the hollow body and with means carried by the upper portion of the body for preventing the liquid received by the body from entering the head of the doll.
The invention also includes an improved nursing bottle having a nipple fitting over the open end thereof and with a vent in the neck of the bottle through which air may freely enter the bottie to relieve the partial vacuum therein to thereby allow the gravitational flow of the liquid through the nipple and which vent is so located that it may be closed by the thumb or finger to thereby shut off the flow of the liquid from the nipple.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawing in which there is disclosed the preferred embodiments of the invention, while the claims cover variations and modifications thereof which fall within the scope of the invention.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through a doll constructed in accordance with the invention and illustrating a nursing bottle associated therewith.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view illustrating the connection between the body and one of the articulated limb members.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary longitudinalsectional view of a doll illustrating a modified form of the invention.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view through the head in the region of the mouth opening and illustrating the bottle nipple inplace.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary face view of the doll head illustrating a section of the nipple positioned in the mouth opening.
Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view through the nursing bottle.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference and more particularly to the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 thereof, the doll I0 comprises a body II, a head I2 and arm and leg members I3 and I4 respectively, each of which parts is of hollow formation and is constructed of rubber or other compressible resilient material. The body II is provided with an annular flange I5 extending outwardly from the upper end of the neck portion thereof and in surrounding relation to the neck opening extending into the hollow interior of the body. The head I2 of the doll is formed with an opening for receiving the neck portion of the body II and is provided with an inwardly ext-ending annular bead I6 defining the inner periphery of the neck opening which is engaged by the lower annular face of the flange I5 for securing the head in position on the body II.
A tubular boss I! formed on the inner surface of the head I2 in surrounding relation withthe mouth opening I8 has secured therein the upper end of a flexible conduit I9 which conduit extends downwardly through the neck opening with its open free end 20 located in the hollow interior of the body II for conveying the liquid received in the mouth opening into the body. The mouth opening I8 is of elliptical configuration so as to receive centrally therein the end of a nipple 2| of a nursing bottle 22 and to admit of the gravitational fiow therein of the liquid from the nipple and the escape of the air from the body through the corners I8a of the mouth opening when the nipple is inserted therein and the doll laid upon its back. The upper end of the conduit I9 is fixedly secured within the tubular boss I! in spaced relation to the mouth opening to thereby form an enlarged intake chamber Ila within the boss I! and between the mouth opening and the end of the conduit I9 so that when the nipple is inserted in the mouth opening the discharge end thereof is spaced from the open end of the conduit I9 thereby allowing the free egress of the air from the body through the conduit I9 and through the corners Ilia of the mouth opening.
The Walls of the body II are normally distended as shown in full lines in Fig. 1 and are adapted to be depressed to the dotted line position shown therein for producing a suction in the conduit I9 and at the mouth opening I8 to thereby draw liquid from the nursing bottle 22 into the body II when the nipple 2| is inserted in the mouth opening I8. Thus the doll may be positioned so as to receive the gravitational discharge of the liquid from the nursing bottle or the doll may be manipulated to create a .suction within the body to draw the liquid therein from the nursing bottle.
For the purpose of preventing the liquid received in the body from entering the head of the doll, the body I l is provided with an inwardly extending, inwardly tapered tubular member 23 having a flanged upper end 24 cemented or otherwise sealed to the upper surface of the flange I5 with the remaining portion thereof disposed in spaced relation with the inner surface of the body H and through which tubular member the conduit I9 extends with the open free end 28 thereof projecting beyond the open free end 25 of the tubular member 23. The conduit I9 substantially closes the opening in the free end 25 of the tubular member 23 and thereby entraps the liquid received in the body from entering the head of the doll.
The arm and leg members l3 and M are each provided with a reduced neck portion 26 and an outturned annular flange 2i defining an annular groove, which neck is snugly fitted within an opening 23 in the body I! to provide a swivelled air and water tight connection between the limb member and the body. The inner ends of the arm and leg members 53 and M are each sealed with a rubber covering 29 cemented or otherwise secured to the inner face of the flange 21 which extends over and closes the opening into the interior of the limb member to thereby prevent the liquid in the body it from entering the same. The body ll thus forms a substantially water and air tight receptacle for receiving the liquid drawn in through the mouth opening by suction created when the body is compressed. The body I! is provided with a small outlet 39 through the rear wall thereof which permits the slow escape of the liquid received in the body.
The nursing bottle 22 is formed with an elongated neck 3! having a vent 32 through which air may enter the bottle to relieve the partial vacuum created therein when the bottle is filled with the liquid so as to allow the liquid in the bottle to flow through the outlet 33 in the free end of the nipple 25 secured over the flanged open end 35 of the bottle. The vent 32 is so located that it may be closed by engaging thereover the thumb or finger to thereby prevent air entering into the bottle so as to shut off the flow of the liquid through the nipple.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 3, the opening extending into the body 35 through the neck thereof, is closed by a covering 36 of rubber which is cemented or otherwise secured to the upper surface of the annular flange 31 extending outwardly from the upper end of the neck portion and surrounding the opening into the body 35. The covering 36 is formed with a restricted opening 33 for snugly receiving therethrough the conduit 39 extending from the mouth opening 453 of the head with its free end extending downwardly into the interior of the body 35. The covering 38 functions to pre- Vent the liquid received in the body 35 from entering the head of the doll.
What is claimed is:
