2 Claims.
This invention relates to whistles and particularly to a whistle adapted to produce bird calls of various kinds, differing in pitch and tonal quality, and simulating the twittering and vibra- 5 tory efiect of bird calls.

Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a whistle embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical, longitudinal sectional view, taken in the plane of the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, taken in the plane of the line 3--3 of Fig. 2.
In that embodiment of the invention shown in the drawing, the elongated hollow tapered body 10 and mouthpiece ll simulate the body of a bird having a head l2. The mouthpiece II is of the fipple type, having an air inlet l3 and an orifice l4 located in the upper wall adjacent the inner end of the inlet [3. A beveled edge I5 is located in the air path near the inner end of the inlet l3. The top I6 is flattened.
The body It] has one or more tone holes H in its top wall and an air outlet l8 at the end of the tone chamber 19 opposite the mouthpiece end. The parts l and II are provided with interfitting flanges 20 for connecting them together.
A screen 2|, preferably :of brass wire, extends across the tone chamber IS. The screen may be mounted in the body 10 or inner portion or the mouthpiece in any suitable manner, but the arrangement shown, in which the peripheral edge 22 of the screen disc is engaged between the flanges 20, is preferred. The parts 2|] and 2| may be cemented together if desired. The screen is located between the mouthpiece inlet l3 and the nearest tone hole I1, and sufficiently removed from the inlet I3 to accommodate a movable ball 23, preferably of cork or the like, between the screen and said air inlet.
By providing a continuous longitudinally extending air passageway through the instrument body, in which is located a vibrating ball confined by a pervious screen between the mouthpiece and the nearest tone hole, I am able to produce bird calls varying greatly as to pitch and type of sounds.
Changes may be made in details of construction without departing from the scope of my invention.
I claim:
1. A whistle comprising a hollow body forming a tone chamber, a mouthpiece at one end of the body, said body having an air outlet at the opposite end and a tone hole communicating with the tone chamber, the opening and closing of the tone hole serving to vary the pitch of sounds produced in the tone chamber, an air pervious screen extending transversely of the tone chamber between the mouthpiece and said tone hole, and a vibratory member movable in the chamber between the screen and the mouthpiece in the direct path of the air flow for altering the tonal quality of the differently pitched sounds produced in the tone chamber.
2. A whistle comprising a hollow body forming a tone chamber, a mouthpiece having interfitting engagement with the body at one end, said body having an air outlet at the opposite end and a tone hole in its upper wall between said outlet and the mouthpiece, the opening and closing of the tone hole serving to vary the pitch of sounds produced in the tone chamber, an air pervious screen extending across the tone chamber and engaged peripherally by the interfitting parts of the mouthpiece and body, and a member movable in the chamber between the screen and the mouthpiece in the direct path of the air flow for altering the tonal quality of the differently pitched sounds produced in the tone chamber.
