UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUSTE LAC/HA", OF NE\V YORK, N. Y.
WATCHCASE.
Specification of Letters Patent. No. 22,254, dated December 7, 1858.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUeUsTn LACI-IAT, of New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in atchcases; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the drawings, making a part of this specification, which are fully described herein, and similar letters indicate similar parts in both the figures.
My improvements are, firstly, a simple and ready method of constructing the case of a watch in order that it may have the appearance either of an open-faced or of a hunting watch, as desired, being of the kind known as magic cases, and a second feature lies in a method of so constructing the push-pin which passes through the pendent, that the front cap or hunting cover can not be accidentally opened whenever it may be desirable to have that part of the case kept close.
In the annexed drawings Figure I represents an edge View of a watch case which is constructed generally like what are known as hunting cases, the crystal-ring or bezel being seen at (a). The front cap (1)) however, although similar in appearance to the usual cap of a hunting watch, is made so that the central part of it at (0) can be readily taken off and replaced at pleasure, and this is effected by turning up the inner edge of the ring (7)) and turning over the edge of the central part, in the manner shown in section at ((Z), whereby the parts can be snapped or sprung together. The backcap (6) has a projection ('2'), constituting its central part, and this is made also to receive upon it, the part (c) of the front-cap, and which is shown detached at (0) in position to be placed upon said projection when it is required that the watch shall be an open faced one. Thus in operation, when the security of a hunting case is desired, the part (c) is affixed upon the front -cap, and when the convenience of an open face is preferred that part is taken off and may either same, reference being made to the annexed be laid away or may be aflixed upon the back of the case at (2"). IVhen this part'is removed from the front cap the ring (6) of that will have the appearance of the usual crystal-ring, or bezel, and when closed the glass will be seen through the opening precisely as if affixed to it. In this condition it will not be desirable that it should be opened by the push-pin (n) and to obviate acciden tal openings, either when in the pocket or by the hand when taking the watch out, the push-pin has a movable head (0) and the stem of it is cut with a screw, the head (0) having a female screw whereby it may be moved along upon said stem.
When the head is at the outer end of the stem, as in Fig. I, the push-pin may be used to press the catch back, but when the head is in the position shown in Fig. II it is evident that the push-pin cannot be made to go in, and therefore the front cap will remain locked close.
I claim as of my invention- 1. The method of constructing a magic watch case, substantially as described herein.
I also claim making the head of the push-pin movable in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
AUGUSTE LAOHAT.
