somma The invention relates to the manufacture and construction of mattresses.
Heretofore, it has -been the usual practice to tuft mattresses by extending ties through both the top and bottom paddings and covering and through the core and securing tufts or buttons to the ends of the ties.
One object of the invention is to provide a method of securing the top and bottom coverings to the spring center core, and a mattress construction in which the top and bottom coverings are separately tufted without the use of ties between the top and bottom of the mattress.
Another object of the invention is to provide a method and means whereby the assembling of preformed top and bottom coverings can be expeditiously secured to, and assembled with, the spring structure or core of the mattress.
Another object of the invention is to provide fasteners which are adapted to extend throughl and be secured to, the separate padded coverings, and which include means for clipping or snapping their inner ends to the spring center core of the mattress'. i
These objects are attained by the use of fasteners which are adapted to. and are, passed through the coverings and compress the filling at spaced points before assembly with the spring center core and providing the fastener with hooks or clips for attaching the fasteners to the core.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the detailed description.
The invention consists in the several novel features which are hereinafter set forthv and are more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawing: Fig. 1 is a vertical section of a portion of a mattress embodying the invention vand being assembled in accordance therewith. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 3, illustrating one of .the fasteners. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-'3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective of a fastener attached to the spring structure, the pad being omitted for illustrative purposes. Fig. 5 is a section of the fastener taken on line 5 5 of-Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a perspective of a stud-mem-l ber of one of the fasteners. Fig. I is a perspective of the socket-member of one of the fasteners.
In the manufacture of mattresses in accordance with the invention, a spring center core comprising springs ||l and helicals is assembled into a structure according to the size of 'the mattress desired, as well understood in the art.
The core constitutes a resilient center structure for the mattress. This structure usually consists (CI. H56) of coil-springs with marginal and longitudinal helicals or frame-members at the top and bottom by which the springs are held together in connected relation, it being understood that any suitable spring structure may be used. A fabricated boxing |2 is'assembled around the sides and ends of the core, as well understood in the art. Next, top and bottom coverings, each consisting of suitable layers of padding material I3, an inner sheet, or lining I4 of fabric and an outer tick-member 10 I5, are made up conforming to the size and shape of the mattress desired. The margins of the lining I4 and tick I5 are stitched together to enclose the padding material, so they will constitute preformed pads adapted to form resilient top and 15 bottom coverings for the core.
The invention contemplates securing thepadding I3, lining I4 and tick I5 together at spaced .points, which may correspond to the points at which mattresses are usually tufted, by means of 20 fasteners which will compact or compress the padding material I3 at such points, before the top and bottom coverings are assembled with the core. These fasteners are ofthe stud-and-socket type. The stud-member comprises a head I9 for 25 engaging the outer face of the tick-member, a shank I8 which is adapted to extend through the covering, and provided with a pointed end 20 which is adapted to be forced through the pad to project from the inner side thereof. The 30 socket-member comprises a plate 2| provided with a hole 2|EL through which the point 20 is adapted to pass, and resilient tongues 22 adapted to be engaged by the shoulder 20 at the upper end of point 2li of the stud, to hold the stud- 35 and-socket members in connected relation after the covering has been compressed between the head I9 and the plate 2|. This socket-member is preferably cut and shaped froma single piece of sheet or plate metal to form the plate 2| for 40 engaging the inner face of the lining i4 and the pair of resilient tongues 22, which are folded and extended inwardly from cuts in the margin of plate 2| and provided with semi-circular notches 23 at their inner ends to lt around the shank 45 I8 ofthe stud above the shoulder 20 at'the upper end of the point 20 to secure the clip-member on the stud. Tongues 22 are resilient so they will be spread by the point 20 when the stud is forced through the pad and snap against the shank above the stud to prevent separation of the stud and socket-members. In manufacturing mattresses in accordance with the present invention,
` the studs are passed through the coverings and secured in socket-members before the coverings are assembled'with the core and boxing of the mattress. These fasteners may be inserted through the pads at spaced points in a. suitable press in which all of the socket-members for a covering are held in properly spaced relation on a bed and the studs held in a coacting pressmember are simultaneously forced through the tick-member, padding and liner-sheet and holes 2|a in the socket-members of the fasteners until the shoulders 20 of ends 20 have passed through the notches 23 in resilient tongues 22. During this operation the covering will be compressed by and between heads I9 of the studs and plates 2| of the socket-members and the members will be secured against withdrawal from the covering.
Each fastener comprlses'a device for connecting it, after it has been secured in the covering, to the spring core. This device comprises a resilient tongue 26 struck from the plate 2| and bent to form a hook 21 and a coacting tongue 28 also struck from plate 2| having a curved inner end 29, and serving as a latch or snap for retaining a wire in the hook. The hook 21 and the curved end 29 of tongue 28, when pressed against any wire of the spring structure, will spring apart and readily permit the wire to be forced into the hook and so that it will be secured'in connected relation to the wire, as illustrated in Fig. 3.
In fabricating the mattress, the covering 'with the assembled fasteners, is placed over the top of the core and the hooks 21' on the socketmembers of the fasteners are successively connected to underlying wires of the springcore such, for example, as the top convolutions of thev springs or vframe-members. In latching the hooks 21 to the spring core, one row of fasteners can be connected to. thecore while the unattached portion of the covering is folded upwardly,` as illustrated -in Fig. 1, and successive rowsr of fasteners will then be connectedr to the core until all of the fasteners inv that covering have been connected to the core.V 'I'he top and bottom coverings Vare assembledA -and) connectedY toy the core, in the same manner so that the foregoingl description istLappli,:a".ble: lt'o1v When allof the fastenerson eac' covering;`

In the' completed mattress, the studs will form i depressions in the top and bottom pads to, compact.the padding in the coverings at the spaced points and the fasteners will be secured to the spring core, so the coverings will be held on and against the top and bottom thereof. The reduced shanks I8 of the studs permit'the padding to be further compressed under load and to yield laterally when subjected to lateral pressure.
In the event that replacement of a covering is necessary, the studs of the fasteners can be separated from the socket-members by springing apart the tongues 2|,by means'of a suitable pry or tool. This makes it possible to re-use the fasteners or remove a defective one.
