Description
UNIT D- s'rA-Tn s PATEI' FFIGE.
GEORGE ADDISON, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN REFRIGERATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,221, dated December 2, 1879 application filed September 20, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be-it known that I, GEORGE l-ADDISON, of the city of Baltimore, and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Refrigerators, of which the following is a specification; and I do hereby declare that in the same is contained a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to the combination, in a refrigerator, of a removable ice-box, together with a separately-removable tray to collect water resulting from the melting of the ice and the condensation of vapor, and a removable pipe to convey the said water from the refrigerator to any suitable receptacle located exteriorly of the same, as will hereinafter fully appear.
The invention consists in the construction of the said parts and their combination, the several elements being specially adapted to form, when combined, a simple, neat, and convenient part of the refrigerator.
It is found that in refrigerators in which the icecontaining devices and those adapted to carry off water are fixtures, the cleansing of the different parts of the refrigerator is a diificult matter, and considerable loss from the melting of the ice is caused by the exposure'of the inner surfaces of the refrigerator during the cleansing of the ice-box and its att-achments.
These difficulties do not occur to the same extent where the ice-box and its attachments may be removed for cleansing, and the refrigerator closed durin g the operation, to exclude warm air.
In the furtherv description of my said invention,- which follows, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, forming apart hereof, andin which- Figure I is a sectional front view of the improved refrigerator; and Fig. II a transverse section of the same. Fig. 1H is a sectional view of the ice-box and its attachments removed from the refrigerator.
B isthe removable ice-box, having the doubly-inclined and slotted bottom a, and inclined perforated gutter b fastened to the said bottom. The said box is fitted with legs 0, which rest in a tray, 0, supported in any part of the refrigerator. by means of bars d, the object of the said tray being to collect water from the gutter and the exterior of the ice box.
The bottom of the tray is inclined in such manner as to carry the water conducted thereto to a nozzle on the under side thereof, which nozzle extends into a removable pipe, D, the lower end of which enters another nozzle in the bottom of the refrigerator. A suitable receptacle is placed under the refrigerator to collect the water passing down the pipe D.
It will be seen that the ice-box and its attachments may be easily and readily removed from the refrigerator to be cleansed, as before stated.
I do not claim in itself a refrigerating-vessel having an inclined slotted bottom; neither do I claim, broadly, a removable ice-box, combined with a removable drip-pan and a wastepipe. In refrigerators in which such parts are combined, there has not been, as far as I am informed, the simplicity of arrangement shown in my invention; neither has there been an ice-box resting removably upon a tray itself removable, the ice-box carrying the gutter or waste-water way, and a nozzle leading to the drip-pipe. Neither have I seen a refrigerator of this class in which all the parts namedthat is to say, the ice-box, gutter, tray, and drip-pipe leading to the outside of the refrigeratorhave been constructed so as to be .readily and independently removable, whereby the entire interior surface of the refrigerating-compartment may be easily cleansed.
I claim as my invention- The removable tray 0, snitably'supp'orted within the refrigerator, and provided with a nozzle, and the removable ice-box B, resting upon the tray and having an inclined bottom and a gutter, the latter being provided with a nozzle or outlet, combined with the removable pipe D, leading from the tray to the exterior of the refrigerator, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
GEORGE O. ADDISON.
