7 Claims.
This invention relates to stoves and-more particularly to the arrangement of a water front or a water-heating chamber that is incorporated into the nre-box or iire bowl oi a combined kitchen 5 cook stove and heating stove. This invention relates to stoves similar to the stoves shown and described in my copending applications Serial No. 210,754 filed May 28, 1988, for Heat transfer device now Patent No. 2,171,642, issued Sept. 5,' 1939,
n; and Serial No. 249,974 filed Jan. 9, 1939, for Heat transfer device now Patent No. 2,180,788 issued Nov. 21, i939. in the disclosures in the above identified applications no hot water chamber or water front was provided in association with the i5 nre-box, although reference was made to such a structure. In the embodiment disclosed herein, a rire-box lining is made from twohalves, one i which is provided with a water chamber for heating water, which water chamber projects Tt through an opening in the rebox frame or partition of the stove.
An object of this invention is to provide a combined kitchen cook stove and heating stove, wherein the fire-box lining has incorporated therein a water iront or a water chamber 'for heating water, which water chamber occupies space which has not been taken from the firebox.
Another object of this invention is to provide a fire-box lining for a combined kitchen cook stove and heating stove wherein the fire-box `lining is made from two halves.
Another object of this invention is to provide combined ire-box lining and water-heating 33 chamber that is easily produced, simple in construction, but at the same .time efficient and economical.
another object oi this invention is to provide an outwardly buiging water front which projects if; into unoccupied space.
Other objects and advantages reside in the construction oi parts, the combination thereof and the mode of operation, as will become more apparent from the following description.
i5 Inthe drawing'7 Figure 1 discloses a fragmentary side View of Vthe stove'with parts broken away, so as to show a portion of the stove in section.
Figure 2 istv fragmentary cross sectional View 50 takensubstantially on the line 2 2 of Figure l.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary cross sectional view taken Asubstantially on the line 3 3 of Figures l and 2.

ber, as this iire-boxappears when removed from the stove. v
For some purposes it is very desirable to have a combined cook stove and heating stove. This type oi stove has been found advantageous in -5 camps, in cabins, in household use in the milder climates and as an auxiliary stove in the morev severe climates, augmenting the use of an electric or gas range. Such a stove is found to have considerable heating capacity ior heating a room in cool weather.
Due to the varied uses to which this stove may be put, it is very desirable to have a neat appearing stove, that may bel cheaply constructed; but at the same time harmonizing with the more expensive and luxurious stoves and surrounding equipment. That being the case, it has been found very desirable to enclose the vstove by enamelled panels, so as to present a neat appearance. This has been accomplished by mounting the stove proper, that is, the re-boX of the stove, in the center of the structure and arranging the side panels in spaced relation from the outside of the ire-box, so as to provide air passages between the panels and the lire-box, permitting the circulating air to be heated. in my Patent No. 2,180,788, the inner frame structure is provided with openings exposing the sides of the fire-box to the air1circulating through the'air passages.
In the present embodiment a water chamber or a water iront has been built into one of the halves oi a lire-box which is made from two pieces. The water iront constitutes an outwardly directed bulge projecting into the opening eX- posing the fire-box lining to the air passages, so as to utilize space that is otherwise of no particularutility, other than exposing the lire-box lining to the air passages. By incorporating the water chamber on the side of the -re-boX lining, so as to project into this opening, the eiii-` ciency of the stove is actually increased in the event water is not tapped from the Water chamber, in that the metal forming the walls of the water chamber are good conductors of heat, thereby conducting the heat out to the circulating air,fas will appear more fully later. Referring to the drawing, the front end frame member I0 of the stove and the rear end frame member i2 are mounted upon a base not shown, which base is provided with longitudinalslots providing air passages. These end frame members I0 and l2 support a top 20 provided with a flue opening and a pair of overhanging ledges 22 having a series of .aligned apertures 2,4. This top frame member may be provided with a suitable lid supporting member 28 supporting a lid 30 terminating in a drop edge fuel feed door 32 having a downwardly projecting lip or flange 34. The sides of the stove are enclosed by a pair of panels 38, one on either side, secured in position as more fully described in my copending application Serial No. 210,754 supra. The panels 36 are provided with a plurality of longitudinal openings 38 along the top thereof, so that air entering through the slots in the base may circulate upwardly and escape through the openings 213 and 38.
The base, which has not been shown, supports a pair of partitions 42, one on either side, which partitions are arranged in spaced relation from the panels 38. These partitions 42 cooperate to form the sides of an ash pit compartment. Each partition l2 is provided with a suitable damper 5E), controlled from the front of the stove, as more fully described in my applications supra. The ash pan, which has not been shown, may be removed through a door 56 in the front of the stove.
Suitable grates 60 are supported above the ash pit. Above the partitions l2 are mounted re pit frame members 62, each provided with inwardly directed flanges 64 on the sides of the opening. An inwardly directed rib portion 68 extends across the top of the opening and continuously across the entire length of the fire pit frame member B2. The upper edge of each member 52 is seated in a suitable channel or otherwise secured to the top member 28, Each of the re pit frame members 52 is also provided with a sill portion 10, having a downwardly projecting flange 'l2 merging into an inwardly directed flange 'i6 that supports the fire-box lining members 8D and 82. The lire-box lining member B has an outwardly directed peripheral flange portion 80a. Likewise, the fire-box lining member 82 has an outwardly directed peripheral flange portion 82a. These flange portions 8a and 82a rest upon the rib or flange portion S6 integral with the fire pit frame members 62. In addition thereto, these outwardly directed flange portions rest upon a rib 84 integral with and extending across the front frame member il) and the rib or flange 86 integral with and extending across the rear end frame member l2.
IThe fire- box lining members 80 and 82 may be held in position by suitable bolts not shown, The fire-box lining member 80 lines one-half of the fire pit and the lire-box lining member 82 lines the other half. These members are joined along the front and along the rear of the fire pit, that is, along the narrow ends of the fire pit. Member 82 is preferably provided with overlapping flanges 82b, so as to provide a more perfect union. The entire periphery extending along the flanges 84, the sill 10 and the rib 66 is sealed with a suitable cement, so as to provide an airtight juncture between frame members 62 and the fire-box lining member 8u or 82 as the case may be.
The fire-box lining member 82 is provided with a water chamber 90 that is formed by a bulging portion 92 that projects outwardly through the opening in the fire-box frame member 62, as clearly seen by referring to Figure 2.
An intake pipe 83 and an outlet pipe 94 are used for supplying water to the chamber 90 and withdrawing water from this chamber. A horizontal baffle S6 projects into this chamber so as to divide it into two compartments, causing the water passing through the chamber to circulate throughout the entire length of the water chamber, or substantially so.
When water is not tapped, the water Within the chamber becomes hot and conducts heat. The conductivity of the water, together with the conductivity of the metal, aids in transferring heat very rapidly from the inner surface of the lining 82 to the extreme outer surface of the bulging portion, so as to expose the air passing through the air passage to this outer surface of the bulging portion. Thus, the use of a water front projecting through the opening in the fire-box frame does not decrease the efciency of the stove as a heater except when water is withdrawn, when, of course, the cold water will absorb the heat while it is being heated.
The fire-box lining member 82 having the water front bulge therein may be used either on the left hand side or on the right hand side of the stove. The grate shaking handle is usually disposed on the side opposite the water pipes. When the water front is not used, a lire-box lining member similar to member 8U is used instead of member 82. The flre-box lining is then in two pieces, one of which may be removed if it is desirable to insert a re-box lining with a water front therein. Thus, it is possible to remove one-half of the fire-box lining and substitute therefor another lining having a water front bulge therein.
Although the preferred modification of the device has been described, it will be understood that within the purview of this invention various changes may be made in the form, details, proportion and arrangement of parts which generally stated consist in a device capable of carrying out the objects set forth, in the novel parts, combination of parts and mode of operation, as disclosed and defined in the appended claims.
