My invention relates to improvements in hairtreating appliances, and more particularly has reference to and is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, as applied to hair curlers.

Referring to said drawing, Fig. 1 illustrates in side elevation a suitable form of curler embodying an application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a view at right angles thereto- Fig. 3 a similar View to Figure '1 showing the curler in closed position as used. Fig. 4 is a view of a rubber band adapted for use therewith. Fig. 5 is a crosssection on the line 5-5 of Figure 6. Fig. 6 is a view similar to the left end of Figure 3 showing the wound and retained hair ready for removal. Fig. 7 shows the coils of removed and secured hair. Fig. 8 is a view from left to right thereat with the fastened coils of hair spread out. Fig. 9 is a View from the rear of Figure 8. Fig. 10 illustrates in side elevation a modification of the curler shown in Figures 1 to 3. Fig. H illustrates another modified form of curler in side elevation. Fig. 12 another view of the same at right angles thereto, and Fig. 13 shows another modification in side elevation.

Referring now more particularly to Figures 1 to 9 inclusive, it will be observed that the curler body I may be made of a single piece of stamped sheet metal bent. at l4 to form a resilient hinglike portion or jaws l5, l6 preferably provided with inturned flanges I! (Fig. 5) and terminating in tapered ends I 9, (Fig. 1), preferably enlarged inside as indicated at'2l, to permit the knot or enlargement 22 of the rubber band 23 to engage beneath the same as shown in Figures 1, 2, 3 and 6. Also a suitable hook-like anchorage lip 24 may be provided or formed out of the jaw l6 for engagement of the opposite end 25 of the rubber band, the extension loop 26 thereof serving as a grip for manipulating the same.

In operation the curler body I is gripped between fingers of one hand as shown in Figure 3, the end of a selected group of hairs having been first placed between the jaws l5, l5, and then or before, the rubber band 23 is applied as shown in Figures 1 to 6 inclusive, after which by rotating the curler upon its longitudinal axis the hair will be wound thereon under desired tension. The knot 25 of the rubber band may now be disengaged from the hook or lip 24, swung over the hair, and released under the end 20 of the jaw I 6 behind the knot 22 and enlargement 2|, and the wound and fastened coil of hair may now be slipped off the jaw by pushing the same between fingers until clear thereof, thus producing the form shown in Figure 7. These coils of hair so formed may now be spread as shown in Figures 8 and 9, the retaining rubber band being invisible behind the spread coils next to the scalp of the wearer, and the hair may be so worn or the bands may be removed after a prede- 5 termined lapse of time leaving the hair attractively dressed, and of course, the hair may be moistened and/or heated if desired to produce a more permanent effect.

In the modification shown in Figure 10, instead of using a resilient band such as 23, an elastic cord 30 may be suitably secured at 3| as shown, and may be provided with a bifurcated hook-like member 32 which, after the hair has been wound upon the jaws, may be secured within the ends of the flanges I1, for holding the hair upon the curler. This. use of the curler may be found preferable when treatment is intended without using the coils fastened as shown in Figures 8 and 9.

In the form shown in Figures 11 and 12, a tube 33 having opposite tapered ends 34, 35, and a wall slatted at 331s provided preferably with a soft rubber end 31, and a spring retaining member 38 hooked over the opposite end of the tube as shown at 39 and having a lifted inner end 40, beneath which the ends of the hair may be held when inserted through the slot 36. The hair is then wound upon the tube and the rubber band by rotating the same, after which it may be secured, spread and worn as shown in Figures 8 and 9.

The modified form shown in Figure 13 comprises a curler M, with a pivoted U shaped wire or frame 42, hinged at 43, and provided at the opposite end with a roller 44, adapted to seat in the ends 45 of the curler M, to hold the hair thereon, the same being releasable by forcing the bowed wire frame in the direction of the curler, thus unseating the roller end of the retaining frame 42.

Of course it will be understood that various modifications may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.

I claim:

l. A hair curler including a body formed of sheet metal and bent to present a U-shaped structure with the material at one end forming a spring hinge functioning to hold the parts normally in spaced relation, each of said parts presenting a jaw, one of the jaws forming an octason in cross section with the wall nearest the other jaw removed, said other jaw being polygonal in cross section with one side open, the edge portions of said other jaw being bent inwardly at such angles that they will rest flatwise against two of the walls of the first-mentioned jaw when the jaws are closed for providing a pair of spaced gripping members for gripping a't spaced points a strand of hair to be curled, said first-mentioned jaw being formed with a pressed-out tongue acting as a hook and with an enlargement at one end coacting with the jaw for presenting a notch, and an elastic band having a knot at one end and a second knot adjacent the other end, said elastic band at one end being looped over said hook and at the other end looped over said enlargement whereby said elastic band is held in place as hair is wound on said jaws, said inwardly bent edge portion functioning to clamp the end of a bunch of hair against the first-mentioned jaw.

2. A hair curler comprising a pad formed with a pair of jaws swingably connected together at one end so that the jaws may be opened to receive the end of a bunch of hair tobe wound on the body, said jaws at their free ends tapering, one of said jaws being provided with an enlargement interiorly at the tapering end and intermediate the ends with a bent-up part presenting a hook and a rubber band having an enlargement at one end adapted to interlock with the last-mentiond end and enlargement, an extension at the free end acting as a handle adapted to be manipulated to swing the end of the band straddling said hooks over the hair end of the jaws until the end of the band carrying the. hand1e straddlesth e tapering end of the last-mentioned jaw ready to be pushed oil the curler with the wound hair. v
