This invention relates to booklets, and has special reference to booklets intended for daily or other periodic or casual ready reference use,

such, for example, as calendars, cook books, or 5 other recipe books, almanacs, maps, advertising art books containing advertising matter in association with a calendar, historical matter or other matter oi constant or periodic interest to certain persons or to the public at large, and other forms of booklets containing in whole or in part advertising and topical matters of a character more or less frequently consulted. More particularly the invention relates to a booklet embodying, in addition to matter of any one or more of the kinds noted, an advertising or other display space or field, printed once only, but, through a novel construction and arrangement of the associated elements of the booklet, showing throughout the entire booklet as the leaves are turned.

Booklets of this character are very generally used for advertising purposes and distributed gratuitously to the trade or public. Such booklets are also supplied by manufacturers or other business concerns to dealers in their goods with the business cards of the dealers printed therein, the booklets in such case being distributed by the dealers. It is, of course, of great advertising value to the distributor to have his card printed on each page, or upon pages simultaneously displayed, so as to show throughout the booklet, but this is seldom done because of its great cost and the sacrice of space intended for reading or other informatory matter.

In order to reduce this cost of printing the distributors name throughout the booklet, when a constant showing of the name is desired, it has been a common practice to provide the booklet Awith a portion projecting beyond the leaves of the booklet on which the distributors name is printed. This requires but a single printing impression, but such projecting portion can be readily cut away without destroying the integrity of the booklet or removing the useful information borne thereby by a user objecting to the ap- 45 pearance of a projecting advertising display, with Vthe result of the loss of the advertising value of the booklet to the distributor.

One object of my invention is to provide a booklet which may-bear matter of general or special interest throughout its pages, in connection with an advertising or display neld, so located and associated with cut portions of the leaves of the booklet, as to be visible at any point in the booklet at which the booklet may 5,5 be opened.

A further object of the invention is to provide a construction of booklet of the character described wherein the name or business card of the dealer forming the subject-matter of the advertising eld, while always displayed at any point 5 in the booklet at which the booklet is opened, 'is so disposed `that it is not liable to be cut away by the user and cannot be cut away without destroying a valuable feature of the booklet, thus deterring a user for this reason from cutting 10 away the advertising card and avoiding the loss of advertising value of the booklet to the distributor from this cause.

A still further object of the invention. is to provide a booklet having intermediate leaves bound between cover leaves and provided with cut away portions so arranged that a display eld `disposed upon the inside face of one cover leaf or inside faces of both cover leaves will show throughout the booklet at any point at which the booklet may be opened.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a booklet of the character described embodying simple and effective means, including tabs on its intermediate leaves, adapting the leaves of the booklet to serve as hangers whereby the booklet may be suspended from a support.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the `features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. l is a perspective view of an advertisingcalendar booklet of hanger type, showing it as it appears with the iirst or front cover leaf opened and engaged with a support.

In the practical embodiment of my invention as shown in Figs. l to 3, inclusive/I designates a booklet of generally oblong rectangular form in plan and having its major length in a vertical direction, i. e., perpendicular to the plane of the 50 drawing sheet. This booklet consists of any desired number of leaves hingedly bound together at their upper edges by fastening members, as indicated at `2. The fastening members are herein shown as staples, but any other type 55 of fastening means may be employed. In the illustrated example, the booklet as shown is composed of outer or front and rear cover leaves 3 and il and a plurality of intermediate leaves 5. Also in the illustrated example the booklet is shown as composed of a stack of double-leaf sheets which, when assembled, are folded along a central transverse line, thus disposing all the leaves in superposed relation, the fastenings 2 passing through the sheets along the line of fold at the top of the closed booklet or on a transverse line centrally of the opened booklet. By this construction each leaf is integrally united to a fellow leaf, and all the leaves are joined by the fastening members along a flexible point of bend or hinging point which adapts the leaves to be easily turned up or opened Without restriction or interference from the fastening members. The leaves, however, may be in the form of single-leaf sheets permanently bound together at their upper edges by a spiral type of fastener or in any other suitable manner.

All the leaves of the booklet may be, if desired, of flexible paper or other flexible material, including the front and back leaves, or, if desired, the said front and back leaves may be of stiff or heavy paper in order to provide front and back covers of any suitable degree of durability. In practice, the outer faces 6 and 'l of the cover leaves 3 and 4 may bear any suitable reading or other matter, printed, engraved or lithographed thereon, and designed to be read when the booklet is closed and not suspended for use as a hanging booklet. The inner face 8, however, of the front cover 3 is provided at or in the region of its free edge opposite its hinged edge with a display portion S in which may be printed, lithographed or engraved the business card or name and address, as Well as a trade-mark or symbol, if desired, of the dealer or distributor of the booklet, together with other pertinent reading matter or matter applying to his business. The remainder of this face 5 of the cover 3 may bear any suitable advertising matter or matter of information, but preferably, as shown, is provided with a paneled or outlined space if! in which is printed, engraved or lithographed an artistic picture. The cover 3 is also provided at its said free edge with a perforation El for engagement with a nail or like supporting member l2 on a wall or other support i3, whereby the booklet may be hung up or suspended in open position against any possibility of being lost or mislaid. Adjacent to its lower edge the inner face of the rear cover l may be provided with a display portion I4, paneled off or not into individual display spaces, which may bear business slogans, suggestions to users of the goods, or other matter appropriate to the business or goods or of interest to the public at large. Above this portion I4 the inner face of the cover Il may beI provided with a picture or advertising or reading matter, or both, which will be exposed for observation when the last intermediate leaf 5 of the booklet is turned up.

In practice, the obverse face l5 and reverse face iii of each intermediate leaf 5 are printed, engraved or lithographed so as to bear any desired pictorial or reading matter or matter of information. The obverse faces i5 of the leaves 5 may, for example, bear month tables of a calendar, singly or in groups of any desired number of tables in each group, alone or in connection with suitable appropriate pictorial or other matter, While the reverse faces it of the leaves 5 may bear artistic pictures or advertising matter or matter of information of any kind. Preferably, if the calendar booklet is intended t be one of artistic type, the faces I6 of the leaves 5 Will be used for pictorial displays, of single pictures or picture groups, as desired.

The arrangement of the calendar tables and reading and pictorial matter is or may be such that upon the first or front cover leaf 3 being opened or turned up, as shown in Fig. l, and at all times thereafter, the printed matter shown upon juxtaposed surfaces of two adjacent leaves will simultaneously be exposed to the view of the observer. By reference to Fig. l it will be seen that when the front cover leaf 3 alone is turned up or opened, the matter appearing upon its inner face and upon the obverse face of the rst intermediate leaf will be exposed. By reference to Fig. 2, which shows the rst cover leaf and rst leaf 5 turned up or opened, it will be evident that when one or more leaves 5 are opened or turned up, the matter appearing upon the reverse face of one leaf 5 and the obverse face of the next leaf 5 will be exposed to view, which arrangement of the reading and other display matter on the obverse and reverse faces of succeeding leaves 5 may prevail throughout the booklet as successive leaves are turned. The construction of the booklet is, therefore, such that the printed subjects-matter appearing on simultaneously exposed pages of adjoining leaves may be of related character, for ready and con* venient reference, each with respect to the other, such as a month calendar table and pictorial or related historical events or astronomical data pertinent thereto. The arrangement of the printed matter may also be such as to show in connection with the calendar table of any month significant and appropriate information, for example, that stated ovver or other seeds. should be planted during such month, the house painted during such month, or other work done, at an appropriate time under the best climatic conditions. 'Ihe tables and reading matter may, of course, be shown in connection with such advertising matter as the distributor of the booklet may desire to have incorporated therewith.

In Figs. 1, 2 and 3 I have shown a type of booklet which may be used, for example, for advertising purposes by a business concern desiring to keep its name before the public, and which booklet may be of the calendar type referred to or of any other suitable type, and hence have incorporated therein matter of general or particular interest so that it will be preserved by the recipient for a determined period, during Which the distributor has the benefit of the advertising presented thereby. An important feature of my invention consists in providing such a booklet with means whereby the name, business card .or other advertising matter of the distributor may be printed once only, but Will nevertheless show throughout the booklet as the leaves are turned. It will, of course, be understood that any desired advertising matter of the distributor may be printed on any or all the pages of the cover sheet, so that such advertis` ing matter will show when the front cover leaf is opened, as illustrated in Fig. 1; but, it is desirable, in addition to this to provide means whereby the name of the distributor and other matter pertaining to his business, if desired, Will also be prominently displayed throughout the booklet and at any point or page at which the booklet is opened. To this end I make the body portions of the leaves 5 of less length than the lleaves 3 and 4 or provide the Ylower free edges of the leaves with cutaway portions, as Vindicated at I1, on opposite sides of the vertical center of each leaf 5, leaving ybetween them a projecting portion I8 shaped to form -a tab having a perfo ration I9 therein. The construction is thus such that each leaf 5 may be conveniently grasped and liftedup by its tab I8, and this tab by means of the perforation I9 therein may be engaged with `the supporting member I2 from which the .opened leaf 3 is suspended to 4hold the upturned leaf 5 in open position. As a result of this conn struction, also, it will be seen that when the sheets 5 are in normal position the display portions IiI on the leaf 4 will be exposed at all times through the cutouts I'I while, when the leaves 5 are turned up to open position, the display por,- tion 9 at all times and at any open point in the booklet will be exposed ythrough the cutouts I l. Provision is` thereby made for prominently displaying the name of the manufacturer, dealer or distributor, his address, trademark and other matter desired so as to be kept in constant view. By forming the cutaway portions in the leaves 5 in the manner described an important advantage is gained in that cutaway spaces or windows of ample size to expose the desired display matter which is to be constantly displayed may be provided without intrusion upon or restriction of the surfaces or areas of the leaves 5 designed to receive the printed matter, Furthermore, as the dealers `or distributors card and advertising display matter is not objectionably displayed and cannot be cut off without destroying the integrity of the booklet and essential utility features thereof, which acts as a deterrent, this is not liable `to be done by any one ordinarily objecting to an advertising display on an artistic booklet preserved and hung up on a wall or other surface to be consulted from time to time for information which it conveys. My improved booklet is thus Adesigned toA avoid the loss of the advertising value 'of a booklet of this general character to a distributor, which is apt to occur in those vcases where the distributors card is on a projecting portion of a cover leaf or other leaf which may be cut off without impairing the integrity Vof any of the utility features of the booklet.

lFigs. 4, 5 and 6 discloses another form of booklet Ia embodying my invention in which the general construction of the booklet is the same as that disclosed in Figs. l, 2 and 3, and which differs therefrom only in certain particulars. In this booklet Ia the intermediate leaves 5 are of substantially the same length as the coverl leaves 3 and 4, but each leaf 5 is provided at its lower free edge with a centrally arranged cutaway portion or window opening I'I to normally expose a similarly located display portion I4 on the inner face of the rear cover leaf 4 and to also expose when turned up the display or advertising card 9 .of the dealer at the top of the'inner face of the turned up front cover leaf 3. The handling and suspending tab I8', having a perforation I9', is here formed on the upper edge Wall of the cutout and projects a short distance into the cutout space. Normally with this construction the bottom portions of the leaves on opposite sides of the cutout I1' while exposing the display portion I4' conceal the portions of the inner surface of the leaf 4 at opposite sides thereof, but this is compensated for by the provision of display portions I 4a on the leaves 5 at opposite sides of the cutout I1. As each leaf 5 is turned up the opening I'I therein exposes only the card portion in the center of the display space 9 and the first leaf 5 turned up overlies the advertising matter at each side of the card, but this may be compensated for by providing the obverse face of each leaf 5 on opposite sides of the cutout with display matter corresponding to that in the space 9 obscured by the first turned up leaf 5, as will be readily understood. The mode of using this modified form o-f booklet Ia will be apparent from the foregoing description applying to booklet I.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, it will be seen that both forms of my invention embody a hanger type of booklet, wherein each leaf or successive leaves when opened up to expose printed matter at any point in the booklet may be held in opened position, and wherein also the leaf or leaves so opened up is or are adapted to perform the function of a hanger whereby the booklet may be hung up or suspended from a suitable support against any possibility oflbeing lost or mislaid and in a position for ready observation anduse. The perforated tabs on the intermediate leaves 5 not only adapt each intermediate leaf to be readily engaged and turned, but also adapt the leaf to be held in upturned position, so that both the lfront cover leaf provided with the perforation II and each intermediate leaf provided with a perforated tab, serve as means for suspending the booklet from a support. When the booklet is so supported with the front cover leaf and first leaf 5 in open position, the printed matter on the reverse side of this inside leaf and on the obverse side of the succeeding leaf will be eriposed to view for ready and convenient reference thereto, and so on throughout the series of inside leaves as such leaves are turned. It will be understood, of course, that any number of the leaves 5 may be lifted at a time and engagedwith the support I2 to hold the booklet opened at any point therein containing matter which the user may desire to have prominently displayed or displayed for convenient reference for any predetermined period of time. conveniences and advantages the booklet construction is such as to ensure to the manufacturer or dealer distributing the booklet that his advertising matter will be displayed as long as the booklet is in use, since his card or advertising matter is not liable to be cut away by anser for the reasons stated. The booklet, obviously, is so designed that it may be gotten up in a comparatively inexpensive manner or may be gotten up as expensively as desired, since the booklet provides for the printing, lithographing or engraving of high art pictures, which, as well as the booklet as a whole, may be imprinted in as many colors as desired.

While the structures shown are preferred, it Will, of course, be understood that variations in the arrangement of the advertising and other matter thereon and of the structural features may be resort-ed to within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

What I claim is:

1. A booklet comprising front and rear leaves forming cover leaves, and a plurality of intermediate leaves, said leaves being hinged together on a transverse line centrally of the opened booklet, the front cover leaf and the intermediate leaves adapted to be successively turned upwardly as the booklet is progressively opened to display subject-matter appearing on the faces of the leaves as exposed, each of said cover leaves being provided on its inner face adjacent to its free edge opposite its hinged edge with a display portion, the front cover leaf being provided adjacent to its free edge opposite its hinged edge with a perforation whereby it'may be engaged when in turned up or open position with a support to suspend the opened booklet therefrom, and each intermediate leaf being provided at its free edge at a point between its side edges with a cutaway portion or recess and with a perforated suspend- `ing tab depending into said recess and adapted whenthe leaf is turned up to engage the support, said cutaway portions or recesses of the intermediate leaves being arranged to register with said display portions on the respective cover leaves in the open and closed positions of said intermediate leaves.

2. A booklet comprising front and rear leaves forming cover leaves, and a plurality of intermediate leaves, said leaves being hinged together on a transverse line centrally of the opened booklet, the front cover leaf and the intermediate leaves adapted to be successively turned upwardly as the booklet is progressively opened to display subject-matter appearing on the faces of the leaves as exposed, said cover leaves being provided on their inner faces adjacent to their free edges opposite their hinged edges each with a display portion, the front cover leaf being provided adjacent to its free edge opposite its hinged edge with a perforation whereby it may be engaged when in turned up or opened position with a support to suspend the opened booklet therefrom, and each intermediate leaf being provided at its free edge opposite its hinged edge with a perforated suspending tab adapted when the leaf is turned up to engage thesupport and having a cutaway portion adjacent the tab, said cutaway portions of the intermediate leaves being arranged to register and with the display portions on the respective cover leaves in the open and closed positions of said intermediate leaves.

3. A booklet comprising front and rear leaves forming cover leaves, and a plurality of intermediate leaves, said leaves being hinged together on a transverse line centrally of the opened booklet, the front cover leaf and the intermediate leaves adapted to be successively turned upwardly as the booklet is progressively opened to display subject-matter appearing on the fac-es of the leaves as exposed, said cover leaves being provided on their inner faces at their free edges opposite their hinged edges with display portions, the front cover leaf being provided adjacent to its free edge opposite its hinged edge with a perforation whereby it may be engaged when it turned up or open position with a support to suspend the opened booklet therefrom, and each intermediate leaf portion being provided at its free edge opposite its hinged edge with a perforated suspending tab adapted when the leaf is turned up to engage the support and having at each side of said tab a cutaway portion, said cutaway portions of the intermediate leaves being arranged to register in the open and closed positions of the leaves with the display portions on the cover leaves.

4. A booklet comprising front and rear leaves forming cover leaves, and a plurality of doubled intermediate leaves, said cover and leaves being hinged together on a transverse line centrally of the opened booklet and coincident with the line of fold of the intermediatev leaves, the front cover leaf and the intermediate leaves adapted to be successively turned upwardly as the booklet is progressively opened to display subject-matter appearing on the faces of the leaves as exposed,

said cover leaves being provided on their inner faces adjacent to their free edges opposite their hinged edges each with a display portion, the' front cover leaf being provided adjacent to its free 'edge opposite its hinged edge with a perforation whereby it may be engaged when in turned up or opened position with a support to suspend the opened booklet therefrom, and each intermediate leaf being uncut at its hinged edge but provided at its free edge opposite its hinged edge with a recessed portion located intermediate of its side edges and with a perforated suspending tab extending into said recessed portion and adapted when the leaf is turned up to engage the support, said recessed portions of the intermediate leaves being arranged to register in the open and closed positions of said leaves with the display portions on the cover leaves.
