The principal object of this invention is the provision of a simplified means for conveying "lubricating oil to thread cutting dies positioned in a stock as commonly used in cutting threads on tubular material.
It is well known that the ordinary thread cutting dies require almost continuous lubrication during such times as threads are actually being cut into tubular material. A common form of thread cutter is reported in this disclosure wherein a pair of oppositely disposed handles are used to turn the stock, which stock carries the actual cutting dies. The invention resides in the adaption made of one of the handles which is commonly turned into the die carrying stock, the said handle being slightly modified by the addition of a relatively few parts of which, in connection with the hollow handle itself, form a practical and convenient and inexpensive oiling system.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise em-- bodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of What is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein the figure is a side elevation with parts in cross section and parts broken away, showing approximately one half of the die carrrying stock together with a tubular handle aflixed therein, the handle carrying the oiling equipment.
By referring to the drawing it will be seen that the die carrying stock 8 is provided with the usual movable thread cutting dies 2, provided at each of its sides thereof (only one side being shown in the drawing) with a threaded socket 3 adapted to receive and retain a tubular handle 4. This tubular handle 4 is usually provided with a cap threaded upon its outermost end, which cap has been modified to form a cap 5 having a circular.

Po sitioned in this threaded socket 3 there is a check valve assembly l3 which takes. the form of a tubular member having a ball valve in its outermost end, and provided with a relatively large 10 By referring again to the outermost end of the tubular handle 4 it will be seen that a suitable gasket i9 is provided and positioned between the circular depression of the cap 5 and the annular flange 9 of the operating button 8. This gasket I9 serves to prevent any lubricant from escaping past the operating button 8.
It will be seen that in utilizing the lubricant applying means it is only necessary that the operating button 8 be depressed slightly which will, in turn, move the operating rod l0 and the flexible gasket I I will, in turn, act as a piston and force the lubricant outwardly through the check valve l3 and into the lubricant delivery tube l1 and out of the lubricant delivery opening l8. In
order that the action may be repeated from time to time, it is necessary that spring means be provided toreturn the piston mechanism and the operating button to operating position. This is provided in the form of a coil spring 20 positioned around and about the innermost end of the. operating rod It and the check valve l3 and bearing against the large annular flange I4 thereof. The positioning of this coil spring 20 provides for the positive positioning of the various operating parts despite any variances in the assembly and positioning of the handle 4 and cap 5 in connection with the threaded socket 3.
By referring again to the outermost end of the handle 4 it will be seen that the circular depression 6 in the cap 5 therein provides adequate protection for the operating button 8 positioned therethrough thus protecting it against mutilation due to striking against foreign objects.
It will thus be seen that a practical and inexpensive lubricating means has been devised which utilizes only a few additional parts in connection with the ordinary tubular handle commonly associated with die carrying stocks. It will also be seen that the lubricant may be readily replenished by simply removing cap 5 of the assembly and filling the interior of the handle 4 with lubricant What I claim is:
1. A manually operated lubrication means p0- sitioned in a hollow handle of a die cutting tool, the said means comprising a cap for said handle, said cap carrying an operating button, an operating rod having a piston-like washer positioned on one end thereof the other end of the said rod' extending to the outermost end of the said hollow handle, and adapted to be moved by the said operating button, a check valve comprising a tubular member having a ball valve positioned in one end thereof and a large annular flange formed on the other end thereof, said check valve positioned in said tool adjacent said hollow handle, a coil spring positioned between said check valve and said operating rod together with a tube communicating with the said check valve and terminating at a point adjacent to said dies, said cap being counter sunk so as to provide protection to the operating button.
2. Means for converting a die carrying stock having a pair of hollow handles affixed therein into a self-lubricating tool, said means comprising the utilization of one of the hollow handles as an oil reservoir, a piston positioned within said hollow handle, the said piston comprising a rod carrying a suitable gasket on one end thereof the other end of said rod extending to the outermost end ofsaid hollow handle, a cap positioned on the outermost end of the said hollow handle, an operating button positioned in said cap and adapted to contact the said rod, a check valve positioned in the portion of the stock adapted to receive the hollow handle, the said check valve comprising a cylindrical member having a
