5 Claims.
This, invention relates to a novel and improved construction and arrangement of core and die members, more particularly where such members are used in casting a slider for separable 5 fasteners or the like. The invention will be best understood from the following description and the annexed drawing, in which I have shown a selected embodiment of the invention and in which:
Fig. 1 is a sectional view through a die structure made according to my invention, the section being substantially on the line of Fig. 2 of the drawing showing part of the construction broken away.

This application constitutes a continuation in part of my prior application, Serial No. 129,319, filed March 6, 1937, and which has now matured into Patent No. 2,181,142, granted November 28, 1939, and is directed to the die structure for forming castings generally of the type and kind in accordance with the method taught in said prior application.
For the purpose of clarity, I have shown in Figs. 3 and 6. of the drawing a casting to be formed by the die structure, and it will be understood that this casting is simply illustrative of the type and kind of castings which can be formed.
The slider body H) as shown comprises top and bottom walls II and I2 joined at one end by 5 a connecting web or post l3. The walls I l and 52 have inturned spaced side flanges l4 and I5,
and the top wall is provided with a finger piece supporting loop I6 cast integrally therewith, The above structure forms a slider body which has two diverging channels separated by the connecting web l3 at the wide end of the slider and defined by the spaced flanges, as will clearly appear in Fig, 3 of the drawing.
At l1 and I8 are shown the die members of sectional View on the line the die structure and'at l9 and 2B are shown the core members of the die structure.
Adjacent surfaces of the die members ll, l8 are provided with impressions 2! which define the outer surfaces of the walls ll, I2 of the resulting slider. The impressions 2! are provided centrally with rib-bed portions 22 which partially form the space between adjacent inturned flanges M and I as will in Fig. 2 of the drawing. Adjacent surfaces of the die parts 57 and 48 are also provided with registering recesses 23 which collectively form the loop it on the resulting casting. Between adjacent abutting surfaces of the die parts is formed a. gate or: admission passage- 24, note Fig. 2, whereby casting material may be injected under pressure into the impression or mold cavity in forming the casting from a nozzle. or discharge partially shown at 25 in Fig. 2 of the drawing.
At this time it is well to point out that the sliders may be cast from any desired die casting material and may be cast from thermoplastic materials such for example as cellulose acetate. It will be understood that the nozzle 25 is brought into registering position with the gate 24 when the die parts and core members are in firm engagement with each other.
The core partJIQ mayzbesaid to be fork-shaped or yoke-shaped inform; that is to say, it is provided with an elongated aperture or recess 26 opening through one end thereof dividing the core part int separate members 2?, which thus form arms of the, fork. The members 2'! are provided with projecting ribs 28 on outer edges thereof which cooperate with the ribs 22 in completing the space between adjacent inturned flanges i i. and: ill as clearly seen in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The members 27 terminate at their upper ends in. shoulder portions 25 which form the ends walls 38 of the slider body.
At the base of the aperture or recess 2% is a curved end wall or fork crotch 3! which forms the rounded end 32 of the connecting web l3. The ends 33 of the members- 27 are adapted to seat on shoulders 34 formed on the core part 20, the core part having a projecting tongue 35 which fits snugly in the aperture 26 and has at its free end a V-shaped recess 37 which forms the V-end 38 of the web [3 as will clearly appear from a consideration of Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawing. Thus the crotch 3| and end 37 of the tongue are properly spaced and shaped to form the web or post [3, the stops or shoulders 34 limiting the movement of the core members towards each other to insure proper spacing of the crotch 3| surfaces of the clearly appear and end 31. Shoulder portions 39 are also provided on the core part 20 to form the end walls 40 of the resulting casting and between the shoulders 39 and the shoulders 34 the sides of the core part 20 are provided with ribs 4| which form continuations of the ribs 28.
In the operation of the dies and core members, suitable means are provided for controlling the relative movement thereof in a properly timed relationship, and in operation the core parts l9 and 20 are first moved into engagement with each other when the die parts l1, l8 are in open position, after which the die parts are closed. While the dies and cores are held in firm engagement with each other, the casting material is injected under pressure into the impression formed around and between the parts, after which the die parts I1 and 18 are separated, the cores operating as means for ejecting the casting from said die parts. The core parts are then separated, the casting being movable with the part 19, after which the casting is then stripped from said part as is illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
In the drawing, to clearly illustrate the operation of the dies and core members employed, a particular type of slider has been shown, and the impression between said dies and core members conforms with the contour of this particular slider and represents only one of innumerable impressions which may be employed. In other words, a slider of any desired shape may be formed by dies having the structural features herein disclosed, providing the contour of the resulting casting permits separation of the die and core parts as indicated.
It will also be apparent that the structural features are not of necessity limited to dies for casting sliders, but may be employed to equal advantage in casting other objects between movable dies when it is desired that the resulting casting have at least partially closed channels extending in a plane perpendicular to the line of travel of the dies.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A device for casting a hollow article having spaced walls connected by a web or post, comprising dies having inner surfaces thereof shaped to form the outer surfaces of said walls, a core member having a fork shaped to extend between said walls, and a second core member having a tongue slidable between the arms of said fork, the crotch of said fork and the end of said tongue being spaced apart and shaped to define the outer surface of said web or post.
2. In a device for casting a hollow article having spaced walls connected by a web or post, a
core comprising two members, one of said members having a fork and the other member having a tongue slidable between the arms of said fork, the crotch of said fork and the end of said tongue being spaced apart and shaped to define the outer surface of said web or post.
3. In a device for casting a hollow article having spaced walls connected by a web or post, a core comprising two members, one of said members having a fork and the other member having a tongue slidable between the arms of said fork, the crotch of said fork and the end of said tongue being spaced apart and shaped to define the outer surface o-fsaid web or post, and a stop on one of said members engaging the other member to limit their movement towards each other.
4. In a device for casting a slider for separable fasteners having diverging channels defined by top and bottom walls connected by a web between the channels and having the edge portions of said walls provided with inturned spaced flanges to define the outer boundaries of said channels; two dies movable into and out of engagement with each other and having inner surfaces which, when the dies are in engagement with each other, define the outer surfaces of said walls and flanges, a core comprising two members movable towards and away from each other in a direction at right angles to the direction of movement of said dies, one of said members having a fork and the other member having a tongue slidable between the arms of said fork during said relative movement of the members, means stopping the movement of said tongue towards the crotch of said fork, said crotch and the end of said tongue, when said movement is thus stopped, being spaced apart and shaped to define the outer surface of said web and the arms of said fork having surfaces shaped to define the inner surfaces of said walls and flanges and to cooperate with said inner surfaces of the dies to define all surfaces of said walls and flanges.
5. In a device for casting a slider for separable fasteners having diverging channels defined by top and bottom walls connected by a web between the channels, a core comprising a member having spaced arms forming a fork, the outer surfaces of said arms converging towards one end of the member and said arms being spaced apart at that end, the inner surfaces of said arms being parallel to each other, and a second core member having a tongue slidable between said arms and having surfaces engaging said inner surfaces of the arms, the end of said tongue and the crotch of said fork being spaced apart when the members are in operative position and being shaped to define the outer surface of said web.
