Description

Julys, 1940. SLPEN 2,207,614
SURGI CAL DEVI CE Filed Dec. 9. 1958 Patented July 9, 194
UNITI-:1o STATES- "PATENT ottica 3 Claims.
The present invention relates to a surgical dressing and more particularly to a device such as described in my Patent No. 2,138,626, issued November 29, 1938, filed under Serial No. 214,177, in which there is described a surgical finger or cover having in combination therewith an elastic band or ring which may be drawn over the cover and exert pressure, not only to holdit in place, but also to make a more perfect seal between the covered element and the cover itself.
The present invention is an improvement over this device particularly in the construction 'and application of the ring to the cover or protective device. The improvement is for the purpose of allowing the elementto be more readily placed and applied in its use. Other purposes will more readily appear from the description given below in connection with the drawing, in which- Figure 1 shows the invention in elevation.
Figure 2 shows a fragmentary view of the .invention with a modification of the form shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3shows another modification of the invention of Figure 1, and,
Figure 4 shows a still further modification of Figure 1.
In Figure 1 the device comprises a body ele-r ment I which is adapted to fit the unit or finger to be protected and may be made of thin rubber, paper like material, or any other type of very thin flexible and yielding or semi-yielding material that is liquid-proof, and should be similar in material, form and shape to that described in lmy patent referred to above.
Similarly as described in my prior patent, an elastic ring 2 is applied to the side of the body element, preferably below the half of the top closed end. Thisvring is preferably flat or semi flat and thin, but of suiiicient elastic and extensible characteristic, so that when it is drawn over the top of the nger element I and put in position somewhere between the open end and the middle portion of the body, it will draw the material of the cover itself, that is the elementv I, to-
Wards the body that is being covered and form' a good seal as is necessary and desirable in this type of device. The ring 2 therefore in its natural and unstretched position is smaller `than the diameter of the finger itself at the point where The disc 4 in turn is cemented to the body portion I by rubber cement, or other suitable cement, and is positioned in such a way that the ring is symmetrical with the vertical center line of the finger element as seen in the position indicated in Figure 1 of the drawing. The disc 4 as indicated in the iigure is on the under side of the ring 2, that is, in face to face relationship with the surface of the body portion I. On the opposite end of the diameter from that where the ring is attached to the body. there is'positioned a tab or projecting element 3 which projects from the ring 2 -and which allows the ring to be drawn over the top end 5 of the finger Without the user actually touching either the ring or the cover. Both the tab or extending portion 3 and the disc 4 may be of the same material as the ring 2 in which case if the form of the ring is as indicated in Figure 1, it may be preferably stamped or molded.
The construction indicated in Figure 1, not only positions the ring in suitable and desirable position, but also the tab allows the ring to be extended and drawn over the end of the ringer' most easily. In the form indicated in Figure 2, the ring is directly attached as indicated by the numeral 6 by cement or other suitable means.v
The tab I corresponds and is in the same position as the tab 3 in Figure 1.
Figure 3 shows a form of a ring 8 that may be either molded, stamped or cut. In thiscase the ring is attached by means of the tab 9, while the tab I0 serves to allow the ring to be drawn ove the end of the linger.
In Figure 4 a square tab I I is used for attaching the ring I2 to the body or finger I3. In this modification the tab II which is square in shape, extends as in Figure 1 on the inside of the ring itself and comes into face to face relationship with the body portion I3 of the finger.
Having now described my invention, I claim:
1. In combination with a surgical finger of the type described, an elastic ring of yielding eX- tensible material, means for attaching said ring to said finger, said attachment positioning said ring with the diameter of the ring through saidy attachment substantially parallel to the lengthwise dimension of said finger and an extension formed outwardly at the other end of said diameter at the periphery of said ring.
2. In combination with a surgical finger of the type described, an elastic ring of yielding, extensible material having outwardly extending tabs on opposite ends of the same diameter, means v.attaching said ring to said nger on one of said tabs with said diameter positioned lengthwise of said finger.
3. In combination with a surgical finger of the type described, constructed of yielding, extensible thin paper-like material, an elastic ring having a normal unstretched dimension smaller than the dimension of the surgical finger, means for attaching said ring to said iinger at only one point thereof and means forming an extension from the edge of said ring at the opposite end of the diameter through the point of attachment for grasping the same and drawing said ring over the end of the surgical finger, said means being positioned at a point on said ring away from the point of attachment of said ring to said finger and exy tending outwardly of said ring.
