(01.22145) This invention relates to washers for the windows of vehicles, and to devices of a similar na-' ture, and has particular relation to an improved means for mounting parts ofsuch devices and for rendering them accessible for filling with the liquid with which they operate.
Devices of this character'include a container for liquid to be sprayed or otherwise applied to a window, conduit means for carrying the liquid to or directing it against the window, and means for pumpin'gthe liquid from the container and through such conduit means. The present invention provides an improved structure for connecting and mounting the several parts, whereby the container may be easily attached or detached, and "when attached will be securely held in place, and also provides an improved and efil cient filler valve means, whereby the container may easily be filled and refilledwith liquid.
These and other objects and advantages, including those arising from the novel structure, and arrangement of the several parts, will become apparent from the following description of the typical embodiment of the invention shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:

As shown in the drawing, the device includes a pump unit ll having an intake and an outlet for liquid, and also having a connection to. a source of variable pressure, such as the intake manifold of an internal combustion engine, which variable t drawn into the pump unlt. Also opening into .or to another suitable support.
the pumpunit through part I2 is a fitting I6 connecting a conduit I! that may extend to a suitable source of variable pressure (such as the intake manifold of a vehicle engine) not shown. An outlet conduit l8 from the pump unit may carry liquid into adjacency with a vehicle windshield or the like. The structure of the unit II and the connectionsfor the conduits extending to and from it may be of the kind shown in my co-pending applicationSerial No. 265,616, filed on even date herewith, entitled Windshield clearing system.
Supporting means for the pump unit II include a plate 19 having a depending integral bracket part 2| and integral upstanding bracketv parts 22. Openings 23 are provided in the bracket parts for suitable fasteners by which the plate may be secured to a dash board it of the vehicle The nipple l3 of pump unit ,ll extends through an opening 25 in plate l9 and is secured by a nut 26 threaded thereto. A cap 21 secured against the lower surface of plate l9 by suitable fasteners, such as rivets 28,
receives the open upper end of a container 29. The latter, preferably in the form of a glass jar, is clamped in place by means including a screw 3? and a bail St. The latter may comprise a U shaped piece of strap metal whose ends are notched to provide each with a narrow stem part 32 and shoulders 33; joined by angular parts 3 The plate 19 has its opposite sides provided with recesses 35 whose mouths are restricted by screw also being screw-threaded through-the member 38, aslshown in Fig. 6. A foot member is swivelly connected to an end portion of screw 31, for bearing upon the bottom of,-contamer 29, and ahandle II is formed on the other end of the screw. It will be noted that when the screw 31 is tightened, tending to draw the bail downwardly relative toplate l9 and container 29, V the end portions of the bail tend to move toward one another due to downward bowing of the central part of the bail. This action'dissipates any tendency of the upper portions of the bail to become displaced from within the recesses 35.
For filling the container without removing it from the assembly, a filler .opening 42 through plate l9 and cap 21 is provided. A closure43 for the opening 42 has an aperture 44 through which tube I extends, and a finger 45 projecting beyond the edge of plate I9 by'which the closure may be moved pivotally about the tube. Aperture 44 is sufficiently larger in diameter than tube !5 that a spacer 46 in the form of a lock washer may be disposed within it and about the tube.
The bottom of the spacer 46 abutsthe plate l9 and the top thereof abuts an annular shoulder 41 on casing part l2. Around the latter and abutting surface 48 of part I2 is a ring 49 having.
radially extending resilient fingers 5|. A gasket 52 and washer 53 are disposed about threaded nipple I3 between cap 21 and nut 26.
Upon tightening of the latter compressing spacer 46, it will be seen that annular shoulder 41, spacer 46, plate 19 and cap 21, gasket 52, Washer 53 and the nut 26 will be firmly clamped together against relative displacement. The closure 43 will be pressed against plate H! by the resilient fingers 5!, so that it will be held irlctionally against accidental displacement, although it can be pivotally moved about the longitudinal axis of tube E5 to a position uncovering the filler opening 42. I
In the preferred form of the invention the rivets 28 are so placed that the heads of two of them are disposed on opposite sides of closure 43, and, by extending above the surface of plate l9,

2. In apparatus of the class described, a supporting plate, an open-mouthed container disposed beneath said plate, a cap for said container disposed against the face of said plate, a pump casing secured upon said plate and having an inlet tube extending through said plate and cap into said container, a filler opening extending through said plate and cap, a closure against 'the'upper face of said plate movable about said inlet tube to cover or uncover, said opening,,resilient means between said closure and pump casing, and rivets. securing said plate and cap together having headsdisposed adjacent opposite sides of the closure when the latter covers said opening.

In apparatus of the class described, a pump casing, a supporting member therefor, said casing being clamped to said member and having a tubular part extending therethrough, said supporting member having an opening therein, a closure for the opening disposed upon'the supporting "member and mounted for movement about said tubular part, and a resilient member engaging between said casing and closure for resisting motion of the latter.-

In apparatus of the class described, a container, a cap for the container, a supporting plate and fasteners securing said cap to the plate, said cap and plate having a filler opening therethrough, a closure for said opening and resilient means for holding it upon said plate, and said fasteners having heads above the surface of said plate adjacent opposite sides of said closure for holding the latter againt accidental lateral displacement.
5. In apparatus of the class described, a supporting plate, a cap secured against the bottom surface of said plate, an'open-topped container having its upper portion disposed in said cap, a bail of substantially U-shape having its upper portions releasably secured to said plate and its bottom portion extending beneath said container, and a member screw-threaded to said bottom portion of the bail for clamping the container against said cap.

In apparatus of, the class described, a supporting member, a supported member, and means clamping said members together comprising a 4 bail having end portions engaged with said sup porting memb'er'and a screw threaded through said bail and engaging said supported member, said supporting member having a recess and a lip extending over the mouth of the recess, and one end of said ball being formed to pass into said recess and having portions adapted to abut the upper surface of said supporting member and to engage in said recess behind said lip.
7, In apparatus of the class described, a plate, a supported member, and a securing member for holding the supported member relative to the plate, said plate having a recess in an edge thereof and a lip extending over the mouth of the recess, and a part of said clamping member being formed to pass into said recess and having portionsadapted to abut a face of the plate and to engage in said recess behind said lip.
