Description
ALEX. ANNAN, OF NEW' YORK, N. Y.
KNIFE-SHARPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 22,055, dated November 16, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, A. ANNAN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Knife-Sharpen ing Device; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a longitudinal vertical section of in v invention, the plane of section passing through the center. Fig. 2, is a plan or top view of ditto. Fig. is a detached end View of the cutters. Fig. Ll, is a detached perspective view of ditto.
Similar letters of reference indicate correi lower edge to a cui beeoine worn, they inay be shifted one relasponding parts in the several figures.
rlhis invention consists in having two cutters forined of rectangular steel plates cut or corrugated at their sides, similar to files, and fitted in oblique grooves in a metallic trarne, the cutters being placed in such position that they retain each other in the frame and are rendered capable of being adjusted in varying positions in the plane of their movement so that the -whole surface of the plates niay be used as cutting` surfaces.
To enable those skilled in the artl to fully understand and construct niy invention, l will proceed to describe it.
A, represents a cast inetal base having two upright plates B, B, attached to it, one at each side, the base between the uprights being slotted or having` an opening a, formed in it. Each upright plate B, has a "J -shaped slot formed in it, and each plate also has two grooves c, o, inade in it, the grooves being in oblique or inclined positions, parallel with the edges of the slots b, see Fig. l.
C, C, represent rectangular steel plates, the ends of which are beveled so as to fit. in the grooves c, c, in the plates B, the plates being allowed to slide freely up and down referring to Figs. l and 3, and it will be seen r that in consequence of the oblique or V- shaped position of the plates B, one plate may be elevated above or below the other and be retained equally as well as when their lower ends are in contact, see Fig. 1.
The knife to be sharpened has its blade, which is shown in red, drawn between the two plates C. C, which cut cach side of its lower edge and forni basils, bringing said Lting edge. its the plates tively with the other, so that thc whole surface of each plate may be used. The plates may be cut or corrugated on both sides, so that when one side is worn, the plates may be turned and the opposite sides used. The plat-es inay l ave recesses or grooves d, niade in theni at their lower ends to perinit. the shavings to pass out, see Fig. 4.
l. do not claim the einployinent or use of corrugated steel plates C, for cutters, for such have been previously used for knife and scissor sharpeners, but
Having thus described iny invention, what l claiin as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
The two cutter plates C, C, with cut o-r corrugated surfaces. placed in oblique posi-4 tions rclatively with each other, and arranged or fitted between the upright plates B, B, of a base A. substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
