Application December 3, reused-arm.tattoos cc 1 Claim. (01315-231) This invention relates to a polisher, and more particularly to a polisherbf the type used when hand-polishing the surface flofuan automobile or other article to whichwaxor the like' has been applied.
One object ofthe invention is to provide a pol isherwherein a piece of sheep skin or the like is detachably secured to a body constituting a hand hold, a pad being providedbetwe'en the sheep l0: js'kinoovering and the under face ofthe body to form a soft backing for the covering andthus permitthevwaxed surface'to be easily polished without danger of marring the surface. Another object of the invention is to so form the body or hand hold that its ends will fit into corners and thus permit the entire surface to be easily polished. c
Another object of the invention is to so form the under face of the body as to define a pocket into which a portion of the padding fits, thus firmly holding the padding in place and preventing it from slipping out of a proper position duringuse of the polisher. Another object of the invention is toso form side portions of the hand hold that marginal portions of the covering may be engaged therein and firmly secured by fastener means consisting of a strand extending about the hand hold and having its ends of an improved construction which will permit it to be tightly securedin binding relation to the covering but easily detached when renewal of the coveringis necessary. Another object of the invention is to provide a hand polisher which isof simple construction andvery easy to use.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is ayperspective view of the improved polisher.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken transversely through the polisher along the line 2-2 of Figurel. t
Figure 3 is a view in elevation of end portions of the securing band for the covering.
Figure 4 is an enlarged view of Figure 3 and indicating by dotted lines the manner in which the latch for the band is operated.
This improved polisher is of the hand operated 55 desired material andis of such width that it.
siliency of theband will cause binding engageinay'be easilygrasped in a person's hand. Reierringto Figure 1 itwillbe seen thatthe body tapers towards its ends, as shown at 5; thus'provi'dingya polisher ofsuch shape that ends thereof may "be engaged in corner portions of a surface to be polished and all portions of the surface easily polished after wax or any'other polishing agent has beenappliedto thesurface. 'The under face or bottom of the body is formedwith an undercut pocket Bto receive the pad 2 and hold l0 tl-iepad in place, and uponfreferring" to Figure ii it will'be seen "that'margina-l portions of the pad cover the portions of the under face of the, body between the pocket and margins of the body and are gradually reduced in thickness so 25 that the pad has an under surfaoewhich is rounded transversely so that the polisher may be rocked transversely during use and side portions of the sheep skin covering easily engaged V in trough-like channels whichare to be polished, 20
Grooves 1 are formed at opposite sides of the hand hold or body above a channel 8 which extends entirely about the body, the grooves 1 being provided in order that the upper portion of the body may be firmly grasped in a persons hand 25 and used without beingliable to slip from his grasp.
The band 4 by means of which the covering 3 is firmly but detachably secured consistsof a strand of resilient metal which is bent to sub- 30 stantially conform to the outline of the body and fit easily within the channel 8. Ends of .the wire strand are reduced to form shanks 9 and III which are overlapped, as shown clearly in Figures 3 and 4 and formed with serrations pro- 35 viding teeth II and I2 upon their confronting faces which are flat. The teeth extend in opposite directions and; when teeth of the shank 9 are engaged with teeth of the shank II], the rement of the teeth and hold theband in a contracted condition about the marginal portions of the covering and firmly hold the marginal portions of the covering in the groove 8. Therefore,
the covering will beheld in a stretched condition and the surface maybe very effectively polished. In order to eliminate danger of the teeth H and l 2 slipping out of gripping engagement with each other, there has been provided a latch l3 consisting of a metal loop which is pivoted to the outer end of the shank III by a rivet or pin l4 and has its bridge portion flattened and tapered transversely to form a tooth I5 which is adapted to engage the teeth It formed by serrating the upper edge portion of theshank 9. When the c tooth of the latch resting upon the shank 9, the latch will ride along this shank and the band may thus be tightened about the body, and as the tooth of the bill has engagement with the teeth It of the shank 9, the band will be held in its constricted or binding position when constricting force is released and the teeth II and I2. held in gripping engagement with each other. Therefore, the band. willbe firmly held in its constricted'co'ndition and the covering firmly held in place. When it is desired to release the covering so that it may be replaced by a new covering, or the covering washed and then replaced,
pressure in a constricting direction is exerted and the latch swung upwardly to the .position indicated by dotted lines in Figure' li The shanks may then be shifted away: :fromeach other to move the teeth II and I2 out of interlocking engagement and the resiliency of the metal from body having longitudinally curved side edge faces a I 2,203,728 shanks are moved towards each other with the coverging and intersecting at ends of the body and formed with a groove extending entirely about the body in spaced relation to upper and lower edges of the side faces, the under face of the body being formed with a pocket spaced from its margins and having undercut side walls,
the portion ofthe under face bordering the pocket being fiat and unobstructed, a pad filling said pocket and having feathered marginal portions extending across the marginal portions of the under face of the body in flat contacting engagement therewith, said pad having its under face transversely arcuate for its full width and terminating at edges of the under face of the body,
a covering sheet of polishing material disposed in smooth contacting engagement with the under face of said pad and having its marginal portions-extending upwardly against side faces of the body and engaged in said groove, a clamping band of resilient metal extending about the groove'dportionof said bodyand the marginal portionsof said coveringsheet with its end por tions overlappedand formed with interengaging teeth, and a yoke carried by one end portion of said band and engaging about the other endportion of the band to firmly hold the teeth interengaged with each other and releasably maintain theband constricted about the body for binding the marginal portions of the covering sheet in the groove and holding the sheettightly stretched across the pad. v p e ARNO' M.
