. and diffusion to water issuing therefrom.
Among the features of my invention vis the provision of an improved baille support offering very little, if any, obstruction to the water. With this construction the lsprinkler will not only cover an area of large circumference but will evenly sprinkle said area.
Another feature of my invention is improved adjusting means for the baille permitting free but steady rotation thereof.
Another feature of my invention is extreme simplicity in construction and design of the apparatus permitting cheap manufacture and assembly thereof.
Another feature of my invention is the provision of an improved 'antifriction support for the sprinkler enabling it to be easily drawn over the lawn or other surface for change of position.
Other features and advantages of my invention will appear more fully as I proceed with my specification.
In that form of device embodying the features of my invention shown in the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 is a view in perspective'of the device; Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the upper end of the device; and Fig. 3 is a View taken as indicated by the line 3 of Fig. 2. v
In that form of device embodying the features of my invention shown' in the accompanying drawing, I0 indicates a vertical pipe with a jet II on the upper end thereof. I2 indicates in general a rotatable baille supported on the upper end of the jet and adapted to be engaged and rotated by a stream of `water issuing from the jet. I3 indicates a thin bowed sheet metal supporting arm having its lowerend `connected to the jet and its upper end carrying a depending adjustable screw or trunnion I4 with its lower` end pointed and engaging a depression or socket I2a in the upper surface of the baille I2.
The lower end of the pipe I0 is supported on a horizontal base member I5 with its ends bent downwardly as indicated by I5a carrying a roller IG mounted therebetween. The lower end of the pipe I0 is supplied from a horizontal supply pipe Il connected to the hose I8. Y l
The wide roller I6 permits the'device to be drawn easily over a lawn or soft surface by pulling the hose I3 without damage to the supporting surface.
The member I3 is made of sheet metal which is of very thin gauge. Suiiicient strength and rigidity is obtained by making the member of substantial width. The long dimension of the member is radial with respect to the axis of the jet so water issuing therefrom encounters very little, if any, obstruction from the member I3. In other words, the member I3 presents its thin edge to the direction of travel of the water and therefore shades or obstructs the sprinkling action to a very iine degree, if at al1.
-T'he upper end of the member I3 is bent at right angles as indicated by I3EL and perforated to receive the screw I4 vwhich is held in position by the lock nuts I9-I 9.
The lower end of the member I3 is also bent at right angles as indicated by I3b and also perforated to go over the jet II. It rests on the shoulder I I a of the jet and is held securely thereon by the nut 20.
The baille I2 has a thickened part or block I2J on its rear side which contains the `depression I2EL above described. The baille I2 has the general shape of a propeller or fan blade designed to throw water issuing from the jet radially and the baffle is unsymmetrical so that water issuing from the jet against the baffle will rotate the latter. In order to permit such rotation the lower end of the baille carries a collar I2c surrounding the upper end of the jet II and resting on the nut 20. The screw I4is adjusted to support the baille and permit free rotation thereof.
While I have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that it is` capable of many modifications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims, in which it is intended to claim all novelty inherent in the invention as broadly as permissible, in view of the prior art.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A lawn sprinkler, including: a vertical pipe; a jet nozzle carried on the upper end of the pipe having external threads thereon; a thin bowed sheet metal supporting arm having its major portion lying in a vertical plane radial to the axis of the jet nozzle, the lower end of said arm being bent into a horizontal plane and perforated to receive the end of the jet nozzle through said perforation, the upper end of said arm also being bent into a horizontal plane and perforated and lying over the jet nozzle; a lock nut on the jet nozzle holding the lower end of said arm thereon a baille rotatably mounted on the jet nozzle; a bearing block on the baille; and a depending through said perforation, the upper end of said arm also being bent into a horizontal planeand perforated and lying over the jet nozzle; means for holding the lower end of said arm on said jet nozzle; a baille rotatably mounted on the jet nozzle; a bearing block on the bale; and a depending trunnion adjustably mounted in the perforation in the upper end of said arm, the lower end of said trunnion engaging the bearing block on thebaie.
