This invention relates in general to milk cans and more particularly to a cover or closure'th'ere for.

-Amongthe objects of the invention is the provisionof a milk can cover construction of such character that a complete closure and pro- 'tection is had for the opening of the can and this in such a manner that the maximum in the way of sanitationisrealized and yet the cover may be readily 'handled and removed and also affords the desirable insulation between the cover and the contents of the can.

.Another object is to provide a can cover con: struction which is simple and durable in its nature, susceptible of convenient and economic manufacture from material and by means of facilities readily available and reliable and convenient in use.

Other objects and advantages reside in certain novel features of the construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which:

Referring to the drawing, the numeral I designates generally a milk can or container of any standard or conventional construction but preferably having a contractedneck 2 above which is an outwardly flaring flange or section 3 terminating in a rolled bead 4 and defining the opening at the top of the can or container.

Cooperable with the container is a cover designated generally at 5 and having as its major elements a plug-like closure with which is assembled an umbrella top 1, the plug and top being interconnected to provide a' unitary cover assembly applicable to and removable from the container as a unit.

The plug-like member of the cover comprises a shell-like body designated generally at 8 and consisting of a lower cylindrical section 9 and an upper outwardly flaring section l dimensioned and proportioned to snugly fit and completely fill the opening to the container defined respectively by the contracted neck 2 and its outwardly flaring extension or flange 3. At the bottom of the cylindrical section 9 there is an integral lower end or closure plate H. The corner between the end plate I! and the cylindrical section 9 is reinforcedby an annular reinforcing metal ring 9 of angular cross section which is secured in place preferably by spot welding. The outwardly flaring upper section [0 of the shell-like plug has integral therewith a flange l2 which curves up wardly and outwardly and then downwardly.

The umbrella top I consists of a flat top plate E3, the periphery of which is provided with an outwardly and downwardly curving annular flange-like structure It, the lower portion of which fits flush against the downwardly and outwardly curving portion of the flange l2. The lower portion of the flange i2 is provided with a rolled bead structure l into which the lower extremity I6 of the flange I4 is interseamed or interfitted. The bead structure I5 and its interfitting and interseamed extremity l6 may be reinforced by wire The bead l5 terminates in an inwardly extending edge portion disposed close up against the outer face of the downwardly curving annular flange-like structure M. A ring of solder designated at I8 is provided between the edge of the bead structure I 5 and the flange structure I. The solder I4 is out of contact with the contents of the container to which the cover is applied.

It will be noted that the umbrella cover 5 and the plug-like member 8 define a completely closed and dead.- air space which imparts to the cover the desired heat insulating properties without materially increasing its weight or disturbing its balance.

The cover may be, conveniently grasped and handled and consequently easily applied to and readily removed from a milk can or container. When it is applied it completely closes the entrance to the can and does this in such manner that there are no spaces or crevices between the cover and the can in which foreign matter or contaminating medium of any kind may find its way. The top of the cover is such as to shed water, ice or snow and contains 01' presents no depressions into which dirt or snow may accumulate. In general, the cover combines all of the advantages of the various types previously known while avoiding the disadvantages of each.

While we have shown and described one construction in which our invention may be advantageously embodied, it is to be understood that this construction has been selected merely for the purpose of illustration or example, and that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.

The invention claimed is:

1. A cover for a container of the type having afiaring neck at its upper open end and comprising a plug-like closure member and an umbrella top, the plug-like closure member being constituted of an imperforate shell designed tosnugly fit in and completely fill the opening at the upper end of the container and having an integral lower end wall and also having an integral flange at its upper end which curves upwardly and outwardly and then downwardly about and beyond the flaring neck of the container, said umbrella top consisting of an imperforate metal plate having an integral outwardly and downwardly curving annular flange, the edges of said flanges being interconnected, said top and said closure member defining a completely closed dead air space to render the cover heat insulating.
