Description

April 23, 1940. c BERRY 2,197,993
VOCAMONICA Filed March 19. 1958 INVE NTOR Cannes NLBERRY Patented Apr. 23, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application March 19,
2 Claims.
An object of the invention is to provide a musical instrument that is constructed and arranged to be held in the mouth and blown through the nose.
Another object of the invention is to provide a musical instrument that is adjustable and adapted to suit any person so that they can regulate the tones therefrom to play a solo or play in an orchestra.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of such character which may be easily operated and which will be simple in construction, simple and positive in operation and which will furthermore vibrate the brain of a person to exercise it.
Changes in the form, proportions and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Other objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the accompanying drawing, the subjoined detailed description and the appended claims.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the invention.
Figure 1 is a front view of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the invention.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the invention shown in section to disclose interior construction.
Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the lower section showing the U shaped opening and foot.
Fig. 7 is a section through line 1-1, Fig. 5 showing the toner gate and members in position.
Fig. 8 is a view partly in section showing how the instrument is used with person's nose and mouth shown in broken lines.
Fig. 9 is a side elevation of the upper section.
Fig. 10 is a side elevation of the lower section.
Fig. 11 is a face view of the toner gate.
Fig. 12 is an end view of Fig. 11.
The invention comprises an upper section I and a lower section 2 which is slidably mounted in the upper section I that may be made of various materials such as glass, metal, Bakelite, etc., which is so constructed and arranged to receive the nose of a user in such a manner that the nostrils of the user or operator will align with the passage 3, while the upper lip rests upon the projection 4 and the foot 5 rests upon the lower lip of the user as shown in Fig. 8 of the drawmg.
The upper section I is provided witha U shaped 1938, Serial No. 196,989
elongated opening 6 having flared flaps 1 that permit the nose of a user to rest snugly in.
The lower section 2 is provided with an elongated U shaped opening 8 that is slidably mounted in the U shaped opening 6 and having the 5 passage 3 extending therefrom downwardly into the opening 9 in the face plate H].
A toner gate I I being a thin fiat piece of oblong shape that may be made of wood or metal is adjustably mounted in the opening 9 by first 10 blowing through the opening 9 and taking the fingers and moving it inward or outward to decrease or increase the opening until the required tone is reached, then it remains in this position without constantly fingering and is held in place by the members l2 and [3 that are fixed by screws M to the face plate Ill.
The face plate It is provided with shoulders l5 that upon which the elongated slot I6 fit over and thus prevent the upper and lower sec tions from coming apart when the instrument is in use.
In use the instrument should be placed not too firmly against the nose and mouth, then the breath from the nose goes through the passage 3 into the opening 9 where the mouth forces it through the opening and the toner gate ll regulates the tones, that a full octave can be played with very little practice.
The lower section 2 being slidably mounted in the upper section I permits these sections to be easily separated so that they can be easily cleaned thus having a clean and sanitary instrument at all times.
I claim:
1. A musical instrument of the character set forth comprising an upper and lower section; said upper section being provided with a U shaped elongated opening having flared flaps for fitting the operators nose; said lower section being slidably mounted in said upper section; said lower section being provided with an elongated U shaped opening; a face plate having an opening therein; a passage extending from the U shaped opening of the lower section to said opening in said face plate and a toner gate comprising an oblong fiat piece adjustably mounted in said opening and held in place by members fixed to said face plate to regulate the tones from the instrument. 50
2. In a musical instrument of the character set forth comprising an upper and lower section; said upper section being provided with a U shaped elongated opening having flared flaps for fitting the operators nose and also being provided with an elongated slot at its lower end; said lower section being slidably mounted in said upper section; said lower section being provided with an elongated U shaped opening; a face plate having an opening therein; a passage extending from the U shaped opening of the lower section to said opening in said face plate; a toner gate comprising an oblong fiat piece mounted in said opening and members fixed to said face plate to hold said toner gate in position in said opening and said face plate having shoulders to permit said elongated slot to fit over.
