PICKER STICK CHECK Filed Sept. 22, 1939 f l 7' 1 h" Inventor "9 :L\ f in a 7 JOHN R. NEWTON,
A iiomeys Patented Apr. 16, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PICKER STICK CHECK Application September 22, 1939, Serial No. 296,153
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a check for picker sticks of looms, the general object of the invention being to provide means for eliminating the leather members now in use and to provide a pair of jaw members which are yieldably held in a certain position by spring means for checking the stick.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts through the several views, and in which:
Figure l is a fragmentary elevational view of the invention showing the lay of the loom with the jaw members attached thereto.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig- 26 ure 1.
As shown in these views the device comprises a pair of jaw members I and 2 of elongated form and of the shape shown in the drawing. The member 2 is thicker than the member I and 30 has an opening adjacent its inner end for receiving a bolt 3 which connects the jaw member 2 to the depending bracket 4 attached to the lay A of the loom, the member I having an intermediate part thereof engaged by the bracket 5 35 depending from the lay, the inner face of the member I engaging the depending rounded part 6 of the bracket and having its outer face engaged by the depending substantially flat part I having its upper end attached to a slotted arm 8 40 which is held to a slotted ear 9 of the bracket 5 by a bolt Ill. The two jaw members adjacent their outer ends are formed with the transverse holes ll through which a long rod I2 passes, said rod having a head l3 at one end with a washer 5 l4 engaging said head and placed between the head and the outer side of the jaw member 2 and a collar I5 is adjustably held to the other end of the rod by a set screw IS. A spring l'l encircles the rod and bears against the collar and the outer 50 face of the jaw member I and tends to hold the outer portions of the jaw members together, as shown in Figure 3 so that the jaw members will check the movement of the picker stick S as it moves outwardly between the jaw members.
By swinging the parts I and 8 so that the part I will bear against a portion of the outer face of the jaw member I, and then adjusting the part 8 by the bolt l0, said part I can exert pressure on the jaw member I so as to hold the outer ends of 5 the jaw members I and 2 apart and thus regulate the checking effect of the two jaw members on the stick.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the 10 invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts provided that such changes fall within the scope 15 of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A picker stick check comprising a pair of elongated jaw members, brackets depending from 20 opposite sides of the lay of a loom, means for connecting an intermediate part of the outer edge of one jaw member to one bracket, means for movably connecting an intermediate part of the other jaw member to the other bracket, whereby the outer end of said other jaw member can be moved toward and away from the outer end of the other jaw member, a rod wholly supported by the jaw members and passing through the outer ends of the jaw members, a spring on a part of the rod for pressing said ends of the jaw members against each other and means for adjusting the tension of the spring.
2. A picker stick check for a loom comprising a pair of jaw members, a rod passing through the outer ends of said jaw members, a spring on the rod bearing against one jaw member, an adjustable collar on the rod bearing against the other end of the spring, a bracket depending from one side edge of the lay of the loom, means for fastening the outer side edge of one jaw member, adjacent the inner end thereof, to said bracket, a second bracket depending from the other side edge of the lay and including a stationary depending part and a second depending 5 part adjustably connected with the bracket, the second jaw member passing between said depending parts which hold the second jaw member for rocking movement, the depending part of the adjustable portion of the second bracket engaging a portion of the outer side edge of the second jaw member.
JOHN ROBERT NEWTON.
