This invention relates to an improved hair curler and has, for one of its principal objects, the provision of a means for curling human hair on the subjects head, which shall be simple to operate, readily applied and which, when ap-' plied, permits the hair strand to be curled p into much closer relationship with the scalp than has heretofore been possible.

One of the important objects of this invention is to provide a hair curler or the like which may be fastened at any desired point along the length of the strand of hair whereby the curl can accordingly be made of an exact length desired.

Another object of the invention is the provision of locking means in a hair curler whereby the curler can be more conveniently used behind the head and the securing means more readily manipulated by the fingers even though the same is out of the line of direct vision.

Another and still further important object of the invention is to provide, in a hair curler construction, means wherein greater access of air to the hair being curled is allowed, and, accordingly, a better evaporation of hair curling fluids and the like.

Another and still further object of the invention resides in the provision of an improved hair curler and associated securing member whereby the entire device can be locked in position around the curled strand of hair regardless of the fact that the bulk of the hair strand increases through winding, and wherein the construction is such that the hair curler or the clamp will not show while in use.

Other and further important objects of the invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the accompanying drawing and following speciflcation.

The invention, in a preferred form, is illustrated in the drawing and hereinafter more fully described.

The reference numeral iii indicates generally the casing of the improved hair curler of this invention, the same comprising generally a tubular structure having one solid end i2, this end being provided with a central end opening l4 therein, and the wall between this solid end and the middle portion of the tube is slotted as best shown at 16, a similar series oi slots it being formed in the wall tube at the end opposite to the end i2, most of these slots extending clear to the end of the tube as shown at 20, but certain solid portions being retained as illustrated at 22 in Figures 1 and 3.

Mounted for swivel action in the end i2 of the tube is a locking bow member 24 which has a rounded hooked end 26 as best shown in Fi ures 4 and 5, and this end rides inside the opening [4 of the end i2 of the tube, allowing a very free swivel action while, at the same time, securely maintaining the device in locked position whenever desired.

Mounted on the other end of the bow locking member 24 is a latch or locking element 30 in the form of a ring as best shown in Figure 3, this ring having locking projections 32 and 34. The projections 32 have a sloping forward face acting in the nature of a cam and which ride over the ends of the teeth forming a corresponding end of the tube in. The projection 34 ,is made on an are adapted to fit inside the circle of teeth, and the connected members 22, this also having a sloping face for a snap cam action in the locking movement.

The fact that the projections 32 fit outside the circle of teeth and the projection 34 fits inside and forms a positive locking structure, and the length of the bow element 24 is such with relation to the length of the tube ii] that a desired snap action is obtained.

In operation, a strand of hair is caught through the open-ended slots i8, and the fact that the free end of the strand is narrow per- 4 mits it to occupy the middle of the tube. Winding proceeds until the desired length of curl is reached whereupon the bowed engaging member 24 is closed over the wound strand and snapped into a locking position over the end 20 of the tube it). It will be evident that herein is provided a naucurler which can be made of various dliieren't. materials such as metal, plastics or the like, the" only requirement being that the material be nonbrittle and have at least some resiliency. The same is easily applied and forms a desired curl construction with a minimum expenditure of time and labor. Furthermore, the advantage of invisibility under normal conditions of use is at once readily apparent.

We are aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of construction varied throughout a wide range without departing from the spirit of the invention, and we, therefore, do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon otherwise than as necessitated by the prior art.

We claim as our invention:

1. A hair curler, comprising a. longitudinally slotted tube, certain of the slots forming free teeth at one end of the tube, and a bowed locking member swivelly mounted in the other end of the tube, certain of the teeth at the open end of the tube being joined together for resilient latch"- ing cooperation with the locking member.

2. A hair curler, comprising a longitudinally slotted tube, certain of .the slots forming free teeth at one end of the tube, and a bowed locking member swivelly mounted in the other end of the tube, certain of the teeth at the open end of the tube being joined together for better cooperation with the locking member, the locking member including a ring adapted to fit over the open end of the tube.

3. A hair curler, comprising a longitudinally slotted tube, certain of the slots forming free teeth at one end of the tube, and a bowed locking member swivelly mounted in the other end of the tube, certain of the teeth at the open end of the tube being joined together for better cooperation with the locking member, the locking member including a ring adapted to fit over the open end of the tube, said ring positioned on one end of the swivelly mounted bowed locking member.

4. A hair curler, comprising a longitudinally slotted tube, certain of the slots forming free teeth'at one end of the tube, and a bowed locking member swivelly mounted in the other end of the tube.

A hair curler, comprising a longitudinally slotted tube, certain of the slots forming free teeth at one end of the tube, and a bowed locking 'member swivelly mounted in the other end of the tube, certain of the teeth at the open end of the tube being joined together for better cooperation with the locking member, the look ing member including a ring adapted to fit over the open end of the tube, said ring positioned on one end of the swivelly mounted bowed locking member and cammed latching elements on the ring, one of said cammed latching elements adapted to encircle the ring of teeth, and the other of said cammed latching elements adapted to be inclosed by the ring of teeth when the device is in locked position.

7. A hair. curling device, comprising a tube, slots extending longitudinally of the tube, certain of the slots forming free ended teeth, the other end of the tube being provided with a restricted opening therein, and a resilient bowed locking element mounted for swivel action in said opening, and a ball shaped swivel element on the end of the locking bow.

8. A hair curling device, comprising a tube, slots extending longitudinally of the tube, certain of the slots forming free ended teeth, the other end of the tube being provided with a restricted opening therein, and a resilient bowed locking element mounted for swivel action in said opening, and a ball shaped swivel element on the end of the locking bow, together with a fastening ring on the other end of the bow.
