1 Claim.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a cigarette package.

More specifically, the invention proposes the construction of a cigarette package characterized by a one piece Cellophane jacket for engaging entirely around a plurality of cigarettes in such a manner that the contents of the package may be viewed from all sides.

Heretofore, in the construction of cigarette jackets it has been impossible to view the contents of the package and further, a corner of the package is usually opened and cannot again be rescaled. This permits drying out of the cigarettes if not used within a reasonable time.

Another object of this invention is the construction of a cigarette package which may be opened across its entire top instead of only one corner, and which may be re-folded and sealed air tight any number of times for preventing the cigarettes from drying out.

Still further it is proposed to provide a flap having a portion extending along one side of the jacket and upon which a tab for holding the flap in a closed position is mounted.

Still further it is proposed to provide a tacky substance upon the free edge of the tab for permitting the tab to be attached to the adjacent face of the jacket proper, and released therefrom any number of times for permitting the entire top of the jacket to be opened.

Still further it is proposed to provide an individual Cellophane or the like wrapper for each cigarette contained within the jacket.

Still further it is proposed to provide the ends of the individual wrappers with recessed areas engageable by complementary recessed areas formed in the ends of the cigarette jacket for selectively stationar'ily holding the cigarettes in position regardless of the number of cigarettes removed therefrom.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a cigarette package constructed in accordance with this invention.

Fig. 2 is a partial perspective view of the cigarette package showing the top thereof in the open position.

The cigarette package, according to this invention, comprises a Cellophane or the like jacket in for holding a plurality of cigarettes II and which is adapted to be imprinted or encased with a package design. The Cellophane or the like jacket I0 is constructed of a single piece of Cellophane and is formed with a bottom portion I continuing at its sides into side portion Ill for the jacket Hi. The ends of the bottom Ill are formed with bottom flaps l0 which are adapted to be extended vertically along the bottom ends of the cigarettes l I. The sides of the side portion Ill continue into side flaps lll two for each side of the jacket, and are adapted to be superimposed one upon the other and upon the bottom flaps In. The end flaps Hi are secured together in any conventional manner for holding the jacket in its folded condition. y

The side flaps III on one of the side portions lo are formed with inwardly extending top flaps H] which are adapted to be folded inwards and extended across the top ends of the cigarettes II as shown in Fig. 1. The upper ends of the side portions Ill are formed with inwardly extending top portions Ni which are normally extended in a superimposed position over the top ends of the cigarettes H and the top flaps P for completely closing the top end of the jacket. The top member Ill on the end opposite the top flaps I0 is formed with a flap III which is adapted to extend downwards along one side of the cigarette jacket III as shown in Fig. 1. The flap I0 is formed with a tab 12 which has one of its ends securely attached to the free end of the flap III. The free end of the tab I2 is formed with a tacky material 13 which permits the free end of the tab I! to be attached ",0 the adjacent face of the jacket ill for maintaining the flap [0 in a position in which the top end of the cigarette jacket will be closed air tight. This tab I2 may be manually pulled from the adjacent face of the cigarette jacket to free the flap ill to permit the top of the cigarette jacket to be entirely opened as shown in Fig. 2. This permits the cigarettes to be easily withdrawn from the jacket, after which the flaps Ill and the top portions It may be returned to their normal position extended across the top of the jacket air tightly closing the same regardless of the number of times it has been opened.

Astifi'ening member I4 is attached to the outer face of the tab l2 and is securely maintained in position thereon for reinforcing this area to prevent the tab from being torn away from the flap ill and also prevent the flap from being torn as the tab I2 is manually pulled away from the adjacent face of the jacket I0.

This construction of a cigarette jacket permits the contents thereof to be easily viewed without opening the same, and also permits the jacket to be opened any number of times to permit removal of the cigarettes and still permit the jacket to be sealed air tight after each opening to prevent drying of the cigarettes.

According to the modification of the invention shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the construction of the cigarette package is similar to that previously described and distinguished therefrom by the inclusion of individual Cellophane or the like wrapper for each of the cigarettes, and a means for selectively stationarily holding the cigarettes in position within the jackets. Each of the cigarettes II. is inserted into a tubular Cellophane wrapper l5 which has one of its ends closed and the other of its ends provided with .a cover l6 permitting the removal of the cigarette therefrom. The cover I6 is formed with a tab ii for permitting the cover to be manually pulled away from the end of the tube l5 for opening the same to permit the cigarette II to be slipped therefrom.

The means for individually selectively stationarily holding the cigarettes in position within the' jacket comprises inwardly extended recessed areas I! formed in the ends of each of the tubular wrappers IS. The bottom l of the jacket I and one of the top flaps ill of the jacket are also formed with inwardly extending recessed areas I. which are adapted to be selectively engaged into the recessed areas l1 formed in the ends of 45 the tubes l for holding the cigarettes in fixed positions within the jacket l0 regardless of the number of cigarettes removed therefrom.

When the top members I. are opened the wrappers I I may be removed therefrom to permit access to the cigarettes II, and when the top members III are returned to their normal position the recesses II will engage into the recesses l1 formed in the top end of the tubular wrappers II for holding the cigarettes in fixed positions therein. In other respects this form of the invention is similar to the previous form.

It is to be understood that the jacket may be sealed in any direction desired.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

A cigarette package, comprising a jacket enclosing a plurality of cigarettes having a bottom wall and an open top, a wrapper enclosing each of said cigarettes having closed ends formed with inwardly extending recesses, a plurality of inwardly extending projections formed on said bottom wall and engageable into the recesses formed in one end of said wrappers, a top flap extending across the open top of said jacket, a second top flap extending across the top face of said flap and in a direction opposed to the direction in which said flap extends, a downwardly extending portion formed on said second top flap for extending along one side of said jacket, means for releasably securing said portion to said side for holding said flaps closed, and a plurality of inwardly extending projections formed on said first top flap and engageable into said recesses formed in the other end of said wrappers and cooperative with said projection for holding said wrappers stationary in position within said jacket.
