' 4 Claims. (01. 20-42 This invention relates to frames for windows, doors, storm sash, screens, -etc., and has for its object to provide an improved simplified construction-for making sash frames. I 5 A further object of this invention is to construct a frame with novel metal corners which, besides holding the rails of the frames together, increases the rigidity of the frames by reinforcing the corners thereof.
10 Another object of this invention is to provide the frame with novel forms of rails in combination with metal corners which permit the rails to be accurately fitted on all sides of the frame including the corners thereof.
15 These and other objects and attendant advantages of the invention will become more readily apparent from the detailed description thereof which follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective front view of the corner construction of a frame in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective rear view of the cor--.
,In the several figures of the drawing like ref 35 erence numerals indicate like parts.
The construction of the frame forming the subject matter of this invention includes the use of rails of uniform cross section for the sides,
top and bottom of the frame. These rails, indi- 40 cated by reference numeral I and illustrated in cross section in Figures 3 and 4, have a portion of their outer edge cut away to provide a rabbet 2 thereon with a narrow groove 3 extending into the rail at the inner edge of the rabbet parallel 5 thereto. In this way each rail is provided with a fitting ridge or ledge 4 on the outside thereof.
The inner edge of each rail is rabbeted at 5 to have the molding 6 nest therein and clamp the edge of a screen I to the rail. On the inside of 5 the rail parallel to the rabbet 5 and suitably spaced from it is the narrow groove 8. This groove is thus located on the inside of the rail substantially opposite to the groove 3 provided in the outside of the rail. In the construction 55 of a frame the ends of the rails are brought tomeans of this ridge. slightly larger thanthe opening into which it is 25 together make this possible.
gether in a miter joint and'the mitered ends are held together by a corner bracket 9. These brackets are formed of sheet metal and provide a rectangular channel with flanges l0, I0 over- U hanging the channel as illustratedin Figure 5. 5 In connecting a pair of rails the mitered ends thereof are telescoped from opposite" ends into the rectangular channel of the corner bracket 9 with theflanges I'll, It thereof projecting into the grooves 3 and 8 in the rails. After the rails 10 are brought together in the corner bracket in this Way nails or screws are driven thruthe metal back or sides thereof into the rails to lock the I ends of the rails in place in the bracket and cause 2 them tobe rigidly connected and held in place in the bracketat right angles to each other.
With the rails fastened togetherin this manner, the fitting ridge 4 of each rail extends beyond the outside of the metal corner brackets which hold the rails together so that this fitting ridge continuously extends around the completed frame to provide for an accurate fitting of the frame into a window or door. frame by The frame is usually made to be fitted and thefitting'ridge make'sit possible to accurately finish the edge of the frame to its proper dimension after it has otherwise been completed. The use of the novel. metal corners and the manner in which they hold the rails In Figure 3 reference numeral .ll indicates thecross section of a window or door frame into which a frame,
made up in accordance With my invention, is
fitted as above pointed out.
When a'glass panel I2 isto be mounted in the frame as illustrated in cross section in Figure 4, the rabbet 5 is provided with a shoulder l3 so as to have the mold l4 provide a channel between it and the rail I in which the glass panel 40 is held in placewhen the molding is fastened to the rail by suitable wire nails l5.
The shoulder l3jis preferably provided by a spacing strip It which is placed or'fastened into the rabbet 5. The spacing strip used is slightly thicker than the thickness. of theglass panel which is to be mounted in the frame so that when the moulding. I4 is fastenedjin place it cannot exert pressure on the edge'of the panel and thereby cause it to break. I claim:
1. A frame made up of a plurality of rails of uniform cross section-having a rabbet on the outer edge of each rail on one side thereof, a locking groove extending inwardly of the inner corner of the rabbet, a second locking groove on the inner edge of each rail intermediate the sides thereof and substantially opposite to said first locking groove, locking brackets connecting said rails by engaging one side and the outer and inner edges of adjacent rails, each locking bracket comprising an angular channel, flanges on-the sides of said channel arranged to partially overhang said channel, said flanges engaging into said locking grooves to guide and hold the sides of said channel against the outer and inner edges of said rails in said locking bracket.
2. A frame made up of a plurality of rails, a locking groove in one edge intermediate the sides of said rails, a rabbet in the other edge on one side of said rails, a second locking groove extending inwardly of the inner edge of said rabb'et to- Ward said first locking groove, a locking bracket embracing one side of said rails, the bottom of the rabbet and a portion of the inner edge of said rails, and means provided on said locking.
bracket to engage said locking grooves to hold said rails in said locking bracket in a predetermined position with relation to each other.
3. A wood frame made up of a plurality of rails having a uniform cross section, metal brackets embracing one side and part of the outer and inner edges of the ends of successive rails on the outside and inside of the frame with a portion of the outer edge of each rail projecting past the parts embraced by the metal brackets to pro vide a fitting edge around the frame and locking means cooperating with said brackets to lock said brackets to said rails.
4. A wood frame made up of a plurality of rails having a uniform cross section with a projecting fitting edge, metal brackets embracing one side and part of the outer and inner edges of the ends of successive rails on the outside and inside of the frame and within the projecting fitting edge of the outside of the frame so as to keep the fitting edge of the frameexposed over its entire perimeter and locking means carried by said metal brackets to lock said brackets to said rails.
