Heretofore, in working on crepe soled' shoes ,with channeling and rounding machine-s, considerable difficulty has beenencountered due primarily to increased drag or binding action on the machine feed elements'. Many attempts have 15 been made to eliminate or decrease this drag in` a satisfactory manner, as by dusting chalk over the crepe soles or by spraying the soles with Water in order to lessen the frictional resistance thereof during feeding. While these attempts resistance of the soles, it was found that abnormal loads were still imposed on various parts of the machines due tothe increased forces applied thereto as a result of the compression of the lcrepe soles during.` feeding. In. other Words, it is necessary for the cooperating feed elements to grip the solesI rather tightly in order to effect the proper feeding thereof, and in so doing the v 'rubber of the soles is considerably `compressed v and the tendency of the vsoles .to expand tonormal thickness imposes the abnormal loading on and consequent Wearing of certain parts of the machines.
This invention overcomes the above mentioned difficulties.vv through the use of an attachment serving to provide a greater clearance between the machine feed elements during certain movements thereof. i'

In the particular example of embodiment herein disclosed the invention is illustrated as applied to the particular form of machine mentioned, so much only of the patented machine as is necessary to illustrate the environment of the invention being included in this disclosure. In order to facilitate an undei-standing of the co-relation of the parts of the invention and the patented machine parts with which they cooperate, the patented machine parts will be referred to herein by the same refto identify them in the patent.
The channeling and rounding Imachine above referred to includes a main cam shaft 2| journaled in the frame of the machine, and-a disc cam |95 rigidly secured thereto. A rock shaft 261 is mounted in the machine frame for oscillatory and yaxial movement and is disposed above and. to one side of the cam shaft 2|. The rock shaft 201 has one end projecting beyond the machine frame and upon which is mounted a feed 'plate 5.
` The feed plate 5 is given a'four-motion movement thro-ugh the following'means. The rocking movements are imparted to the shaft 201 by a cam groove formed in the end of the cam disc |95 and engaging a cam follower 268 rotatably mounted on the end of an arm l269 secured to the shaft. 'I'he longitudinal movements are imparted to the shaft by a cam groove 210 formed in the periphery of the disc cam |95 and engaging a cam follower 21| carried by a sleeve 212 which surrounds the shaft 201. The sleeve is held against rotation by a depending longitudinal rib 213 engaging in a gudeway formed in the frame of the machine.
A sole support 3 is disposed in cooperative relationship to the feed plate 5 for effecting a feeding of work through the machine, and is normally adapted to be given oscillatory movement through the medium of the following mechanism. The
sole support is carried byv a slide |83 which is mounted for verticalmovement in a support |89 which is normally vibrated or oscillated inthe direction of feed of the shoe. The support |89 v is formed on the front end of a shaft 90 which is mounted to rock and move axially in bearings inthe machine frame. It is to be noted that the above described assembly can be moved a 'certain distance rearwardly 'for a purpose to be hereinafter described. A helical compression spring 44 encircles the shaft 2|3 and is disposed between the sleeve 33 and the rear frame bearing of the shaft. The spring 44 constantly tends to urge the sleeve and shaft forwardly thereby maintaining the cam follower 39 in contact with the cam disc |95.
In operation, the main cam shaft 2| and its associated cam disc |95 are constantly rotated at a uniform ratioof speed. The feed plate 5 receives its four-motion movement as described through the cam followers 268 and 21|, and at the same time the cam follower 39 associated with the arm -35 is presented to and constantly urged against the rear face of the cam disc |95 through the expansion force of the spring 44. As thedisc |95 rotates, the cam follower 39 will engage the auxiliary cam face plate 4|, thereby causing the follower, the arm 35 and its sleeve,
and the arm 42 to be displaced rearwardly a distance equivalent to the amount of projection of the cam element-4| rearwardly of the rear face of said disc. This rearward movement of the arm 35 is also transmitted to the sleeve |9| due to the engagement of the arm projection 43 therewith, and to the shaft 213, the arm 30 and the slide and block assembly |93, |89 due to the rigid connection of the sleeve 33 to said shaft. It
' will be observed that the arms 39 and 3| carried by the shaft 2|3 also function as lateral braces between the shaft 213 and the slide mounting sleeve and assembly |99 to therebyv minimize any tendency for axial movement of the shaft 2I3 relative to the entire slide assembly.
- This rearward movement of the slide and block assembly increases the distance between the feed plate 5 and the sole support 3 during the return movement following the feed movement, to thereby allow crepe soled work to be fed through the machine for rough rounding without binding and without placing overloads on the various machine parts. The rearward movement of the shaft 2|3, by virtue of the engagement of the arm 3| secured thereto and engaging the eye of the rod 203, also effects a rearward movement of the rod 293 and the resultant counteracting and relieving of the spring vpressure on said rod.
The rough rounding is accomplished by the usual trimming knife given constant reciprocatory movement in timed relation to the feed movements through the medium of an eccentric and pivotal yoke connection to the knife carry` ing slide, as clearly shown in the Perry Patent 1,030,606.
The attachment can be rendered ineffective for producing the free feeding 'adjustment or feed motion` modification above described by merely releasing the nut 40 holding the cam follower 39 in operative relation to the disc cam |95 and sliding the follower away from the cam to thereby render the follower inoperative or out of contact with the cam. The machine will then function in its normal manner on work not re-` quiring the added feed clearance demanded when working on crepe soles. It is to be understood, of course, that the set screw 32 holding the arm 3| is released during the silencing of the attachment to thereby permit the 'arm to have movement relative to the shaft 2|3 in order vthat the shaft may be permitted to partake of rocking motion in the vertical adjustment of the sole support during normal operations of the machine.
It will be observed that when the set screw 32 is released to permit the arm to have movement relative to the shaft 2|3, such movement of the shaft will also effect an oscillatory movement in space of the arms 35, 42 of the attachment.
It is to be noted that, if desirable, a solid block may be used in working on crepe soles in place of the built up block or sole support 3.
Thus it will be seen that the invention provides means cooperatively. related to the main cam disc of a channeling and rounding machine of the type disclosed, whereby the free feeding of crepe soled work is facilitated.
It is of course to be understood that the details of structure and arrangement of parts may be variously changed and modified without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
Aabout a greater than normal degree of movement of separation to adapt the machine for work upon soles of crepe rubber or the like.
2. In a shoe channeling and rounding machine, a sole support, a feed plate spaced from and opposed to said sole support, means including a rotary cam for imparting movement to said support and plate including a sole feeding movement together and a return movement including a period of relative movement normally effective for channeling purposes and a normal degree of movement of separation for sole freeing purposes, and means actuated by said cam and operable during said return movement for bringing about a greater than normal degree of movement of separation to adapt the machine for work upon soles of crepe rubber or the like.
3. In a shoe channeling and rounding machine, a sole support, a feed plate spaced from and opposed to said sole support, means including a rotary cam for imparting movement to said support and plate including a sole feeding movement together and a return movement including a period of relative movement normally effective for channeling purposes and a normal degree of movement of separation for sole freeing purposes, and means actuated by saidv cam andf operable during said return movement for bringing about spaced from and opposed to said sole support element, rotary cam actuated means for imparting movements to said support element and plate element including a sole feeding movement together andv a return movement including a period of relative movement normally effective for channeling purposes and a normal degree of movement of separation of one said element relative to the other for sole freeing purposes, and additional means actuated by said camv and operable during said return movement for effecting a degree of movement of separation of the other said element relative to the first to adapt the machine for work upon soles of crepe rubber or the like.
5. In a shoe channeling and rounding machine, a sole support element, a feed plate element spaced from and opposed to said sole support element, rotary cam actuated means for imparting movements to said-support element and plate element including a sole feeding movement together and a return movement including a period of relative movement normally effective for channeling purposes and a normal degree of movement of separation of one said element relative to the other for sole freeing purposes, and means actuated by said cam and operable during said return movement for effecting a degree of movement of separation of the other said element relative to the first to adapt the machine for work upon soles of crepe rubber or the like, said last named means including devices movable out of the zone of influence of the cam for silencing said last named means and restoring the machine to normal operation.
6. In a shoe channeling and rounding machine, the combination of a feed plate, a sole support spaced from and opposed to said feed plate, means including a rotary cam for moving said feed plate towards said sole support for gripping work therebetween, means for simultaneously moving said feed plate and said sole support in one direction to effect a feeding of work held therebetween then to effect a return movement of said sole support relative to said feed plate and then to effect a return and spacing movement of said feed plate relative to said sole support back to the initial condition, and means actuated by said cam for increasing the distance between said sole support and said feed plate an amount greater than normalv during the return movements thereof to thereby permit crepe soled shoes to be fed through the machine Without binding the various machine parts.
7. In a shoe channeling and rounding machine, a sole support element, a feed plate element spaced from and opposed to said sole support element, rotary cam actuated means for imparting movements to said support element and plate element including a sole feeding movement together and a return movement including a period of relative movement normally effective for channeling purposes and a normal degree of movement of separation of said feed plate relative to said sole support for sole freeing purposes, and additional means actuated by said cam and operable during said return movement for effecting a degree of movement of separation of said sole support relative to said feed plate to adapt the machine for work upon soles of crepe rubber or the like.
8. in combination with a shoe channeling and rounding machine including, a frame, a rotary cam, a sole support, a shaft journaled in the frame and carrying said sole support, an upstanding lug secured to said shaft, said shaft being operatively connected to said cam, a feed plate spaced from and opposed to said sole' supmort and operatively connected to said cam, leans including a rock shaft normally effective to vary the vertical position of said'- sole support, an arm secured to said rock shaftr and having its free end disposed in close proximity to said cam and parallel to the axis thereof, a camV f0.1- lower mounted on said arm, a cam plate mounted on one face of said cam and projecting beyond the plane of said face, a second arm se-4 cured to said first mentioned arm and adapted rounding machine including, a frame, a rotary cam, a sole support, a shaft journaled in` the frame and carrying said sole support, an upstanding lug secured to said shaft, said shaft being operatively connected to said cam, a feed plate spaced from and opposed to said sole support and opera-tively connected to said vcam, means including a rock shaft normally effective to vary the vertical position of said sole support,
an arm secured to said rock shaft and having its free end disposed in close proximity tosaid cam and parallel to. the axis thereof, acam follower mounted on said arm, said follower being adjustably mounted relative to said cam to vary the degree of movement of the follower by the cam, a cam plate mounted on one face of said cam and projecting beyond the plane of said face, a second arm secured to said first mentioned arm and adapted to engage said lug on said sole support carrying shaft, the cam follower being adapted to engage the face of said cam then engage said cam plate to thereby move said arms, said rock shaft and said support carrying shaft axially to effect ar movement of separation of said sole support relative to said feed plate to adapt the machine for Work upon soles of Y crepe rubber or the like. v

In combination with a shoe channeling and rounding machine including, a frame. a rotary cam, a sole support, a shaft journaled inthe frame and carrying said sole support. an, upstanding lug secured to said shaft, said shaft being operatively connected to said cam. a feed plate'spaced from and opposed to said sole support and operatively connected to said cam7 meansv including a rock shaft normally effective to vary the vertical position of said sole support, an arm secured to said rock shaft and having its free end disposed in close proximity to said cam and parallel to the axis thereof. a cam follower mounted on said arm. a cam plate mounted on one face of said cam and projecting beyond the plane of said face. a second arm secured to said first mentioned arm and adapted to engage said lug on said sole support carrying shaft. the cam follower being adapted to engage the face of said cam then engage said cam plate to thereby move said arms, said rock shaft and said support carrying shaft axially to effect a movement of separation of said sole support relative to said feed plate to adapt the machine for work upon soles of crepe rubber or the like, said rock shaft being also provided at one end with a third arm, the free end of said third arm being connected tolsaid sole support, said rock shaft also being provided at its other end with a fourth arm, the free end of said fourth arm being connected to said sole support carrying shaft, said third' and fourth arms serving to add rigidity to the entire assembly during axial movement of said rock shaft and said sole support under the urge of said cam.

In a shoe channeling and .rounding machine, a frame, a rotary cam, a shaft journaled in the frame, a sole support mounted for normal vertical adjustment on the forward end of said shaft, lthe shaft being operatively connected to said cam, an upstanding lug secured tosaid shaft, a feed plate spaced from and opposed to said. sole support and operatively connected to said cam, means including a spring for constantly urging said sole support carrying shaft forwardly,vmeans including a rock shaft normally effective during channeling operations to vary the vertical position of said sole support, an attachment adjustable between operative and silenced conditions for adapting the machine for work on crepe soled shoes and including an arm secured to said rock shaft and having its free end disposed in close proximityto said'cam,A a cam follower mounted on said arm, a cam plate mounted on one face of said cam and projecting beyond the plane of said face, a secondarm securedto said first mentioned arm and adapted to engage said lug on said sole support carrying shaft, the cam follower being adapted to engage the face of said cam then engage said cam plate to thereby move said arms said'rock shaft and said support carrying shaft axially to effect a movement of separation of said sole supportrelative to said feed plate, said sole support adjusting means including a third arm having one end secured to the forward end of said rockshaft and its other end secured to said sole support, said third armserving to add rigidity to the entire assembly during axial movement of said rock shaft and said sole support under the urge of said cam.
