7 v 1 Claim. Thisinvention relates to glass working tool s employed for finishing .the base of stem glasswareyafter joining of the unfinished base on the stem and has for theprimary object the provision of a device of this character which will form a selected design on the base of the glassware simultaneously with the finishing operation above mentioned thereby rendering the glassware more artistic or attractive and consequently more saleable.- I
With theseand other objects in view,this invention consists in certain novel features of construction; combination and arrangement of parts to behereinafter more ,fully described :and
claimed.
For acomplete understanding of my invention,
reference is to be had to the following description andaccompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is atop plan view illustrating my in- I vention in use for the purpose of designing the base of stem glassware after the application of the base to the stem;
Figure 2 is a side elevation illustrating my invention glassware.
3-3 of Figure 2;:
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 3. I
Figure 5 is a detail plan view illustrating a f modified form of my invention.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary edge elevation illustrating the same.
' Referring, in detail to the drawings, the numeral I indicates a conventional type of finishing tool especially adapted for finishing a base of stem glassware after the joining of the base to the s'tem,fas shown in Figure 1, and prior to de- I taching the blow tube 2 from the glassware 3. Glassware 3, as shown in Figure 1, is formed in the usual way by employing the blow tube 2, the body and stem of the glassware being blown and after the, blowing thereof and while still hot the base d'is joined to the end of the stem. The base 4 is a piece of hot glass. After joining of the base to the stem while still hot, the base is IIOtflIZGdWhilS in contact with polishing or finish-- ing blocks 5 and6 carried by the tool. The rotation of thebase of the glassware is accomplished by the operator rolling the blowtube back and forth over a rest holding the tool I in the other hand so that the surfaces of the base will be polished. Heretofore, the edges of the base are smoothand annular. In order to render this base there artistic or attractive my invention is adapted to the tool I so that a selected design may be formed in the edges of thebase during the finishing of said base by rotating it relative attached'to a finishing tool for stem Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line to the finishing elements 5-and 6 of the tool. The attachment consists of abracket I suitably sea cured to the tool I and to which are pivoted connected arms 8 each arcuately curved. A head!) is secured on the arms and has a slot lllto slid-'- ably receive anaxle l2 on which is journaled a roller is provided with anti-friction bearings I M. "A red 9' 'is'slidably mounted in the head 9 and is connected with the axle, and mounted on'said rod 9' and interposed'between the head 10 9 and the axle is a coil spring I5 acting to urge the roller in engagement with the work. Formed on the periphery of the roller I3 is a pattern or design'of someselected kind. The arms 8 are capable of occupying difierent positions by be- 15 ing pivoted on the bracket 1 and when in one position bring the periphery of the rollerin contact with the base of the stem glassware, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, and when the arms are in another position the roller will be positioned 20 laterally of the base permitting the glassware to be easily removed from the tool. The spring IE will act to force the roller or the periphery of the latter againstthe edges of the base of the stem glassware with suiiicient force so that as, the glassware is rotated thebasewill haveim- 2 pressed in the edegs thereof the design on the periphery of the roller, consequently permitting the design to be formed on the base at the same time the said base is finished or polished in the 3 manner heretofore described. I
Referring to my modified form of the invention, as shown "in Figures 5 andfi, a bracket I6 is secured to the tool land has secured thereto supporting rods I'Ion which is slidably mounted a head; I8. Journaled on the head is the-roller I3. Springs I9 are mounted on the rods l1 and act to urge the head I8 towards the bracket I6 and the periphery of the rollerfin engagement with the edges of the base of the stem glassware.
Threaded on the rods I1 are wing nuts 20 bearing against a plate 2| slidable on the rods" I'I and engaging the springs I9 whereby thetension of ing of the base by said tool, a rod slidable in the head and connected to the axle, a spring mounted on said rod and acting on the axleto. 55 urge the roller in contact with the base! ROBERT A. YUCHTMANN.
