Description
.Im 9, 1940. E. H. FABRICE SEALED RECEPTACLE Filed Jvune 422,e 1938 ying points of the portions 4 and 5 in a plane perpendicular-to the axis of the cap and provides an easily fracturable connection 'I between the por-"q tions Il and 5. The offsetting of the portion 5 p from the portion t is effeced by the ogee curved bead formation 8. A similar bead formation 9 is provided to connect the portion 4 with the crown portion of the cap 3, the portion 4 being shown 1 as constituting the lower terminal of said bead. l
As shown in Fig. l, a shear cut Ill, of L-shape is cut-through the portion 6 from its lower edge vertically to a point in the lower terminal of the bead 8 and along-said terminal of the bead 8 and along said terminal to denne a tongue Il which may be easily engaged-by'a inger nail and bent outwardly for engagement betweenv finger tips.'
From the inner end of the severance cut I0, a scoring groove I2 extends angularly over the bead 8 and portion 5 and connects with the shear cut 'I at a point spaced an appreciable distance from the inner terminal of the severance cut I0. The groove or scoring I2 `is formed entirely in the 'outer face of the metal to render the latter easily severable along said groove.
After thereceptacle is lled, the cap 3 is disposed upon the same in the position shown in Fig. 3, and is then forced down to the position shown in Figs. l and 2, thereby electing expansion of the portions 4, 5 and 6, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5, and also expanding the portion II, attention being directed to the fact that the bead 9 is relatively long and thus will expand readily withoutimposing undue stress or strain on the shearcut 'I which remains intact.
The expansion of the portions 4, 5 and 6 necessarily placesv appreciable stress upon the scorv ing `groove I2 andtends to severthe portion 5 along the same, but the angular disposition of this scoring groove I2 causes the stress thereon`1v -to"be exerted more longitudinally vvthan transversely thereof and thus its fracture is prevented.y
However, the'said stress renders the severance of the metal along said groove very appreciably easier thanwould otherwise be true and thus the v.said groove may be of less depth than is ordinarily required, and the strength necessary to prevent fracture lunder the influence of -the aforesaid expansion thus preserved. i
` It will be noted that theshear-cut I is disposed below the upper edge of the bead 2 when It will be noted further byfreference to Figs. 3
and 6'that the shear cut 'I`is made in a cylindrical portion I3 of the flange of the cap f 3 some distance below the bead 9 which is vertically aligned with the terminal portion 6 and is also expanded coincidentally with the expansion offtheportion 5 so that when the cap is severed along the shearcut 1, the said -portion 4 rwill contract 4to its initial diameter hug the bead 2 ofthe receptaf' y tion of the cap relatively to the receptacle being a sometimes slightly eccentric of the latter.
If said annular space were not provided, then the stress onrthe shear cut 'I would not be uniform throughout and would cause it to become fractured along that portion which is subjected to the greatest stress'i To further guard against variations in stress, the annularportion 6 of the cap acts asa guide or lead member cooperatively with the bead 2 to cause the cap to move down axially parallel with the receptacle so that the lwhenit is opposed tothe bead 2. i The said shearcut l is `designed to provide a very easily frac-L` turable connection between the opposite ends of 2o oset portion 5 vn'll be expanded uniformly as the the cap soV that the latter will sever readily and accurately responsively to manipulation ofthe aoy tongue` and leave no part of the strip orporf tion5 connected with the cap. v
The sealedA receptacle above described will with-V stand twelve or more pounds fluid pressure within the receptacle and will maintain a correspond-v ing degree of vacuum within the same. f l f I claim as nay-invention: 1. A receptacle equipped with a uniformly smooth, peripheral surface portion parallel with its axis, a angedl cover equipped in its flange with an inwardly offset peripheral Aformation conforming to the cross-sectional shape of saidv smooth surface and of slightly smaller lateral dimensions than the latter, a shear-'cut extending partially'through the metal of said cover peripherally of 4'said ange in 'a plane perpendicular to the receptacle axis andbordering the upper edge of said formation, the terminal end portion of said flange being of substantially the saine inner lateral dimensions as 'the outer lateral dimensions of said receptacle surfacev portion and adapted to receive vthe latter snugly telescopicallyand offset outwardly from the lower end of said formation of said cap a distance substantially equal tothe depth of said shear cut, a digitally engageable tongue severed peripherally out of said terminal end `portionof said cover flange and free from the latter along three edges with its lower edge flush with the lower edge of'said ange, and a scoring groove connecting the said flange adapted to beforced over said surface portion of the receptacle and expanded thereby, the
so tongue with said shear-cut, said formation of said unsealing of the receptacle being effected by slev'- erance of all of the portion offsaid 'ange lying below said-shear-cutfrom the cap along said ceptacle axis, a cover equippedfwith a peripheral ange having a terminal portion adapted to snugly and telescopically receive said bead, a peripheralportioniof said flange between its ends being offset inwardly from the said `terminal porltion and being of slightly less lateral dimensions than said receptacle bead and adapted to be forced over the latter and thereby expanded `to seal the receptacle, a peripheralcontinuous shearcut inv a plane perpendicular to the axis of the cover and receptacle and of a depth less than the thickness of the metal of the cap bordering the upper `edge of said offset portion and lyingover said bead when the cap is in sealing position, a tongue completely severed from said lower terminal portion except at its inner end and having its lower edge flush with the lower edge of said flange, and ametal weakening groove disposed in the outer surface `of, the flange and extending angularly from said shear-cut to the inner upper end of said tongue, said terminal portion of said flange being expanded substantially coincidentally with said oi'rset portion and rendering said tongue digitally engageable to effect severance of the metal along said groove and said shear-cut for'complete removal'of all of said flange lying below said shear-cut to render the cap removablev face of appreciable length parallel with the receptacle axis, a peripherally flanged cover having its lower end portion offset outwardly from its upper end portion to provide a lower terminal skirt portion of dimensions to snugly and telescopically receive said bead, another peripheral portionof said skirt portion disposed above said terminal portion and of less length than said bead being offset inwardly from said terminal portion a` distance less than the thickness of .the metal of said flange and providing a peripheral strip of'y smaller'l'ateral dimensions than said terminal por-V tion and said bead adapted to be forced over the latter and be thus expanded and become disposed between the ends thereof to seal the receptacle, a continuous peripheral shear-cut bordering the upper edge of said strip and disposed in a plane perpendicular to the axis of said cap and receptacle and presenting a downwardly facing 4. A receptacle presenting an outwardly continuously convex surface parallel atv all points with'the receptaclev axis and equipped between its ends with an outwardly offset peripheral bead ously convex outer surface parallel at all points with the receptacle axis,'a closure cap yhaving its skirt portion corresponding in shape substantially with the outer surfaces of said receptacleand said bead for snugly Areceiving telescopically thev portion of said receptacle above said bead, the lower end portion of said cap skirt being of larger lateral dimensions than the upper end portion thereof and equipped between its ends with a continuous 'peripheral shear-cut of less depth' than the thickness of vmetal of which said cap is composed and overlyingsaid bead, the portion of the cap skirt below said shear-cut being offset inwardly from the portion above the latter, and said inwardly offset portion being of slightly less lateral dimensions than said bead andadapted to be forced to embracing relation to the latter for hermetically sealing the receptacle, said inwardly offset portion equipped with an external metal weakening groove extending angularly downwardly from asaid shear-cut to a4 point spaced from the lower extremity of said cap skirt, the latter equipped with a substantially I -shaped 45 of appreciable length also presenting a continuslot extending upwardly from its extremity to a v point spaced from said shear-cut and thence sub-l stantially parallel with the latter to the lower end of said groove. f
