Application August 18, 1938, Serial No. 225,561
1v Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in tooth brushes and more particularly it pertains to a tooth brush head for use in connection with handles such as illustrated in my prior patent, No. 2,114,149, of April 12, 1938.
It is the primary object of the present invention to provide a new and novel construction of tooth brush head which may be detachably connectedto a handle of the type shown in my prior patent, above mentioned.
It is a further object of the invention so to construct the tooth brush head that it may be and themain body portion I i.
and
in my patent heretofore mentioned, the brush.
head in this gure being positioned at right angles-to the longitudinal axis` of the handleg.
Figure 3 is a. fragmentary plan view illustrating my improved brush head secured to the handle in alinement with the longitudinal axis thereof, and,
Figure 4 is a'fragme'ntary view, partly in section, the section being taken substantially on thelineI-4ofFl8ure3.
Referring to the drawing by reference character, I designates a brush head constructed in accordance withthe present invention. The brush head comprises a main body portion II, from one side face of which the bristles I2 are ,mounted The main body portion II and the bristles I2 form no particular part of the present invention and may be of any desired shape, size or form.
Extending fromthe main body portion II of the head and preferably from one end thereof,
there is a relatively short extension I3. 'Ihis extension I3 has a contracted neck portion I4 which is positioned between the end of the extension 'I'he free extremity of the extension I3 ends abruptly in a at rectangular wall I5 and within the conflnesof the extension, there is a transversely extending opening IG. This opening is of rectangularform and the specific purpose thereof will be hereinafter set forth. The hand1e, whlchls designated I8 in the drawing, has a siidable member I9 operated by a nut 2l. This slidable member Il has a beveled end (Cl. 30G- 6) face 2I which cooperates with a nose portion 22 which is angularly disposed upon a body portion 23 which in turn constitutes ari-extension of the two arms 2d.
When it is desired to position the brush head so that its longitudinal axis extends at right angles to that of the handle I8, the contracted neck portion I4 of the brush head is placed between th beveled end face 2i of the sliding member Iii 'and the nose portion 22 of the body portion 23 after which the sliding member I9 is moved by the nut into clamping engagement with the contracted neck wportion I4 of the brush head to clamp and hold the same in operative position as shown in Figure 2.
With the head in this position with relation to the brush, a straight up and down movement of the brush bristles in a direction lengthwise of the teeth, this being the most effective `way to clean them, and this can be eiected without discomfort on the part of the user since he may perform the operation with his arm close to the body instead of in the extremely awkward position required of the arm to perform this operation with a brush of usual type.
When it is desired to secure the brush head in alinement with the longitudinal axis of the handle member as illustrated in Figures 3 and-i, ,the nose portionv 22 is inserted into the opening I6 and the angular face 20 of the movable member I9 moved by the nut into engagement with the edge of the at rectangular wall of the extension I3 of the brush head.-
In this last described position, the brush head is firmly clamped in alinement with the longitudinal axis of the handle member and the device is employed as an ordinary tooth brush.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that the present invention provides a new and novel tooth brush head which may be used in connection with handles by which it may be removably carried, and more particularly the invention provides a brush head which is especially adapted for use with the-handle illustrated in'my aforementioned patent.
Having thus described the invention, claimed, is:
A brush head of the type described comprising a relatively thin body portion, a relatively short extension projecting from one end thereof and terminating in a fiat rectangular end face having a definite upper outer edgea contracted neel; portion separating said extension from the main body portion, and an elongated opening extending transversely of said relatively short extension between the contracted neck portion and the free end of 'the extension.
