Description
Jan. 2, 1940. F. G. STEPHENS LOCOMOTIVE SMOKE CONSUMER Filed July l MS ATTORNEYS."
F'FPED 6'. STEPHE/VS Patented Jan. 2, 1940 UNITED srA'rEs man PATENT Clains.
This invention relates to smoke consumers capable of general application in furnaces, locomotives, and the like.
An object of the invention is to provide a device adapted to be mounted in the combustion chamber of a locomotive or furnace for ejecting jets of steam in various directions into and through the smoke, etc., in the combustion chamber to cause more complete combustion of the lighter particles and substances that would otherwise pass to the outside.
Another object of the inventior is to provide a device of the character mentioned including a member having therein a chamber for receiving i steam, and outwardly diverging outlet openings from the chamber through which the steam may be discharged in various directions in the combustion chamber of a locomotive or furnace.
Another object of the invention is to provide a member of the character mentioned with a cover composed of refractory tile or carborundum, or other refractory substance, having holes therein registering with the outlet openings from the chamber in said member, and an interlockng device between said cover and said member holding the cover in position thereon.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description, reference being made to the annexed drawing, in which- Fig. 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the locomotive comprising a firebox and adjacent equipment, and having the present invention mounted therein.
Fig. 2 is an approximately vertical cross-sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view approXimately on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a View illustrating a member forming the receiving chamber for the steam, the refractory cover being shown in. section.
Fig. 5 is an inner side elevation of the upper portion of the device, the lower portion being in section.
For convenience of illustration, I have shown the present invention mounted in the fire-box of a locomotive, but the utility of the invention is not restricted to use in locomotives.
The member i is composed of metal including walls forming a steam receiving chamber 2. The wall 3 of the member I is curved, and a series of holes l open in outwardly diverging directions from said chamber 2. A compartment 5 is formed in the outer end of the member l. The upper wall of the member l, is formed with a transverse rib 6.
The refractory cover for the member' I, which may be made of tile or carborundum,or any other suitable refractory material, comprises a body 'I having therein a compartment or space 3 in the upper wall of which a transverse groove 9 is formed. The vertical width of the compartment or space 3 is at least equal to the vertical width of the member i including the rib 6, so that said member may easily be inserted in said Compartment or space 8 and the rib 5 engaged in the groove 9, leaving the lower end of the member l separated from the lower wall oi the Compartment S by an intervening space at least equal to the height of the rib 5.
The cover i' is .formed with a series of outwardly diverging and outwardly flaring passages se the inner ends of which register with the respective outlet openings 4. These devices are mounted in the fire-box or combustion chamber of the locomotive or furnace at the sides thereof, so that the jets of steam discharged through the openings i& of one device will intersect the jets of steam discharged from the openings i& in the cooperatng and oppositely located device.
Pipes ll extending through the side walls of the fire-box or combustion chamber have their inner ends screwed into openings in the end Walls of the respective members l, so as to discharge steam into the receiving chambers 2 and out through the passages 4 and !0. These tubes open into a source of steam supply and, as shown, they open into a pipe !2 which opens into the vapor fountain` !3 on the top of the locomotive. The pipe !2 may be equipped with a valve !4 which may be opened and closed as desired.
When the invention is used in a locomotve, the devices are mounted upon the arch [5 in position so that jets of steam will be disch'arged transversely and in diverging directions toward the rear of the fire-box and obliquely upwardly. Thus, certain of the jets of steam discharged from the device at one side of the fire-box will intersect jets of steam discharged from the opposite side of the device, producing a cyclonic effect, with the result that nearly all of the lighter elements are burned instead of being discharged to the outside.
The construction and arrangement of the invention may be varied within the scope of equivalent limits without departure from the nature and principle thereof.
