. I UNITED "STATES PATENT OFFICE MOTION PICTURE FILM REEL Axel Kolmodin, Lockport Township, Will County,
Application April 22, 1939, Serial No. 269,484
I 1 Claim. (CL- 24270) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in reelsparticularly for motion picture films and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a
5 device of this: character embodying a novel construction whereby one end portion of the film strip may be expeditiously connected to the hub thereof. i
Other objects of the invention are to provide 10 a reelof the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efiicient and reliable in use, compact, light in weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
5 All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate 20 corresponding parts throughout the several views,
and wherein: Y
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a motion picture film reel constructed in accordance with the present invention. 1
5 Figure 2 is an elevational view, takenat right angles to Fig. 1. i
Figure 3 is atop plan view.
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view, taken substantially on the line 44 of Fig. l.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal sectional View, taken substantially on the line 55 of Fig. 3.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a hub of 35 suitable material, such as Bakelite, which is designated generally by the reference numeral i. Extending centrally through the hub l is the usual bore 2 which accommodates a shaft. Formed integrally with the hub l are apertured flanges 3 0 and 4. I
Extending into the hub I from oneside thereof is an annular channel 5. This annular channel 5 provides spaced, concentric inner and outer portions 6 and 1, respectively, in the hub l. .The flange 4 is split by a slot 8 which extends through the outer portion 1 of the hub I to the flange 3. 5 This is shown toadvantage in Fig. 4 of the draw ings.
It is thought that the manner in which the device is used will be readily apparent from a consideration, of the foregoing. Briefly, to con- 10 nect the film to the reel, said film is simply slipped laterally into the slot 8 with one end portion thereof terminating in the annular channel 5 in the hub I. It will thus be seen that the film may be expeditiously connected to the reel in such a manner that the necessity of endeavoring to insert the fingers. between the flanges of the reel,
as at present, is eliminated.
It is believed that the many advantages of a reel constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it isto be understood that changes in the details of construction may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is: A reel of the character described comprising a hub having a bore extending centrally therethrough for the reception of a shaft and further having annular channel extending thereinto from one side thereof providing concentric inner and outer portions having a substantial space therebetween, and flanges on the hub, one of said flanges and the outer portion of the hub having a slot therein for laterally receiving an end portion of a strip of film, the annular channel receiving said end portion of the film in a manner to facilitate wrapping same around the inner portion of thehub. 4
