IMPROVEMENT IN EXTENSION-CHISELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 217,899, dated July 29, 1879; application filed March 17, 1879.
1'0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. OUGH, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on an Extension Mortise-Ohisel; and I do hereby declare that the following description of my said invention, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forms a full, clear, and exact specification, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has reference to mortisechisels; and it consists in the peculiar arrangement of parts and details of construction, as hereinafter first fully set forth and described, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing already mentioned, which serves to illustrate my said invention more fully, the figure is a perspective view of my chisel.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the usual mortise-machine chisel, having the taper shank B for attachment of said chisel to the mortise-spindle of any of the well-known mortising-machines. This chisel has centrally a socket, (J, provided with an angular transverse aperture, for the reception of the shank E of an auxiliary chisel, I, fastened to the head F by means of a set-screw, H. This auxiliary chisel I is slotted on its upper extremity, fitting a projecting rib, G, on the head F, whereby it is prevented from playing laterally, but rendered adjustable vertically.
The size of the cutting-edges on the auxiliary chisel I varies in accordance with the nature of the work to be produced.
The object of the auxiliary chisel is to produce a recess or sink in the wood to be mortised by the chisel A, and the purpose for which I have especially designed this compound chisel is to produce in window-frames the inortises for the sash-pulley housing, and at the same time the depression in the face of the frame for the reception of the flanges of said housing. It may, however, be also used for mrious other purposessuch as, for instance, for producing the mortises for mortise-locks in the edge of doors, and many other purposes.
It will be readily observed that the chisel I is shorter than the chisel A, and that the former is vertically as well as horizontally adjustable by sliding the chisel I up or down on the head F, or the shank of the latter in or out of the socket (3.
By this arrangement I am enabled to adjust the relative positions of said chisels in such manner as to produce at once the desired mortise and the recess in the face for the flanges of the housing, 850.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new' The compound mortise-chisel hereinbefore described, consisting, essentially, of the main chisel A, provided with the socket (3, having an angular passage, and with a taper shank, B, and the auxiliary chisel I, secured to the head F by the set-screw H, said head having the shank E, passing through the angular aperture in the socket O, and being adjustably retained therein by the set-screw D, as and for the use and purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have hereto set my hand and aflixed my seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
