IMPROVEMENT lN GATES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 2 [7,774, dated July 22, 1879 application filed May 24, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J OEL OLoRE, of Waveland, in the county of Montgomery and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of my improved gate in plan view, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.

This invention relates to certain improvements in gates which are adapted to be operated from an elevated point, or by a person on horseback, or seated in a vehicle or upon a loaded one, without dismounting, and it consists in the employment, in connection with a swinging gate having its upper end weighted to effect the closing of the same automatically, of a lock or latch having arms with eyes or other provision for the passage of cords or their equivalents through them, by pulling upon which cords the gate is opened, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, A A refer to the gateposts, which are provided at their upper ends with side cross-bars a a. The projectiug ends of these bars, on one side of the gate-posts, are connected together on their lower sides by slats b, or other suitable means, for supporting a cross-bar, b, or other support fastened thereto, for a pulley, e. The projecting ends of these bars a a on the other side of the gate-posts have fastened to their upper sides similar slats d, or other suitable means, upon which is fastened a projecting bar or support, 6, for a pulley, f. B is the gate,

which is hung in the upper ends of. the posts A A, near its upper end, which is weighted or made heavier than its other portion, to effect the automatic closing of the gate. It is pivoted 0r hung to swing vertically, and when elevated or opened it is arrested and held in such position by the aid of the sup ports or slats b. O is the latch or lock, with one end pivoted to one of the slats or bars (I, and confined at its other end in a staple or bail, g, fastened to a cross-piece at the upper ends of the gate-posts. A spring, h, is fastened to the same bar or piece, and serves to keep the gate, when closed, in forcible contact with the latch, the spring h pressing against the gate, while the beak of the latch fits over one of its slats or panels, as clearly shown. The forward or beaked end of the latch is provided with arms, or rather a cross-bar, 2', passing transversely through it, whose ends are provided with eyes i or their equivalents. 70

D D are two cords or their equivalents, attached to the upper end of the gate, and passing, one through each of the eyes i, in a downward position, to cause them to draw, when pulled, upwardly on the latch, and effect its disengagement from the gate.

One of these cords is passed over or under one of the pulleys k, and thence over the pul ley f at one side of the gate, where it can be grasped by the person without dismounting, if on horseback or seated in a vehicle or on a load, and pulled, opening the gate. The other cord passes over the other pulley k, thence through an aperture or hole in the cross-bar d, and over the pulley 0, depending from the latter, to be conveniently grasped in opening the gate from that side thereof.

When the gate is closed the latch falls by gravity and secures it, the spring h, as above intimated, causing the latch, or rather its beak or hook, to clamp the gate, insuring the fastening of the gate.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters PatentF l. The combination, with the vertically swinging gate having its upper end weighted,

-of the latch pivoted so as to cause its book or beak to catch hold of the gate, and pro vided with transverse arms having eyes and cords, or their equivalents, passing dowir wardly from the gate through the latch-arms over pulleys, and depending from each. side of f the gate, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. The combination, with a vertically-swinging gate, of the hooked latch, facing down- I latch-arms and over pulleys, Where they can Wardly, and a spring acting against the gate, so to cause the latch to clamp the gate,

substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination of the "ertically-swinging gate hung with its upper Weighted end between uprights or posts, the latch having perforated arms, a spring acting upon the gate, and cords, or their equivalents, passing downwardly from the gate through the perforated be conveniently grasped, substantially as and for the purpose specifieda In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two Witnesses.
