CONSTRUCTION OF IRON RAILINGS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 21,750, dated October 12, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM S. FULLER, of Millbury, in the county of lVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Cast-Iron Fences; and I do hereby declare that the same is fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, of which Figure 1, denotes a front view of three fence paling's having my improvement applied to them. Fig. 2, a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3, a horizontal and longitudinal section taken through one of the confining rods. Fig. 4, is a transverse sec tion taken through the rod and its segmental connection.
The nature of my invention consists in the application and arrangement together and about the connection rod and with respect to each two fence palings, as hereinafter described of a segmental connection piece, and two sockets therefor, the sockets being arranged in the two abutting palings.
In the drawings, A, B, C, represent the palings which are to be made of castiron and of the ornamental form exhibited in the drawings or any other which may be appropriate to the employment of my invention in connecting the palings together.
Fig. 5,1'epresents a rear view of one of the palings, while Fig. 6, is an end view, and Fig. 7 is a front view of one of the segmental connection pieces.
By inspection of Fig. 5, it will be perceived that each paling is formed with two semi circular channels or grooves, a, 6, arranged in it and of sufficient size to respectively receive the two connection rods 0, (Z. Furthermore, each end of each of the said grooves is formed with a socket, 6, adapted to receive and fit closely to the outer surface of a segmental connection piece, f. This segmental connection piece is the segment of a cylindrical tube and is greater than one half of the tube or in other words, in its transverse section, the segmental connection piece should have an are greater than 180 in order that when the said piece is slipped on the rod, it will embrace the same so as not to be capable of being readily drawn off the same in a direction at right angles to the axis of the rod. Each socket for the reception of such segmental connection piece, should be so made that when the connection piece is once introduced into the said socket, the former can only be drawn away from the latter in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the former.
By inspection of the drawings, it will be seen therefore, that each socket is bored or formed so as to present in cross section a curved surface or are somewhat greater than a semi-circle or 180. Each of such segmental connections used between any two of the palings should extend into each of the said two palings.
The two connection rods may be formed with screws and nuts at their ends as shown at, g, g, a semi-segmental connection piece, it, being used against each nut as seen in the drawings. This semi segmental connection piece should be placed in a socket formed in the paling to receive it and in a manner like the sockets of the other connection pieces. Furthermore, it will be perceived that in the process of applying the connection pieces to the palings of a fence, we have, first to insert the segmental connection pieces in the sockets of the abutting palings. Next, we place the semi segmental connection pieces in the sockets of the end palings, finally, the rods are introduced endwise into the connection pieces and the nuts turned upon the screws so as to draw the palings closely together. This mode of connecting the palings differs from that patented by me in April, 1857, and has one great advantage over the same if not others, such being that the connection piece of the paling does not show as a projection from the front face of the fence, and is protected so as not to be easily broken by a blow so as to effect a separation of the palings at the place of connection. What I do claim as an improvement or new arrangement of parts is- The afore described application and arrangement of ring segments or segmental connections and their sockets made substantially as described to fence palings and a connection rod the same being to effect advantages in the construction of metallic fences.
