3 Claims.
This inventionrelates to cutting and forming means, and more particularly to a machine or means for cutting metal lath, such as herringbone lath, to dimension and then forming it into shape and contour for particular service required, such as corners in building wall construction and the lathing thereof. The invention has for its object to provide improved means and mechanism of the character disclosed which will be generally superior in point of efiiciency and serviceability, taken together with inexpensiveness in construction, convenience and effectiveness in use, and which will be generally superior from the standpoint of serviceability.
With the above and other objects in'view, the invention consists in the novel and useful provision, formation, combination, association and relative arrangement of parts, members and features all as hereinafter described, shown in the drawings and finally pointed out in claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a machine and mechanism constructed and organized to embody the invention in one manner and form; I
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, upon an enlarged scale, of same taken on the line 2-2, Fig. l, and looking in the direction of the appended arrows;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged, detail, transverse sectional View taken upon the line 33, Fig. 2, the handle portion shown there being in elevation, parts being shown in extended relationship which are shown in folded relationship in Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 3, showing the parts in altered relations, said extended members being therein shown folded in correspondence with the showing in Fig. l; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the lath unit-s formed in the use of the invention as disclosed.
Corresponding parts in all the figures are designated by the same reference characters.
Referring with particularity to the drawings, I have shown at A a framework consisting of upright members 6, longitudinal members I, and end members 8, with which are associated an elongated fixed cutter member 13 and a swinging cutter member C cooperating therewith, and adapted to travel at the lower end between the nether edge portion thereof and the upper extended surface of a guide member D, the swinging member C being provided with a roller 9 which is adapted to travel between said last named members, so that the swinging cutter member by its handle or hand-grasp may be caused to play adjacent the side of the fixed cutter member B and may be manipulated lengthwise of that member and the guide member B in advancing cutting action for the purpose of severing the material, such as metallic lath l i, as shown in Fig. 2, into suitable widths for forming by the forming means E adjacent such cutting means. The metallic lath or other material in extended form may be cut up transversely by the cutting means mentioned to produce the proper lengths of the ultimate units produced in turn by such cutting means, as indicated.
This forming means consists of two members 6, j, which are hinged together as at 12, the hinge line extending preferably parallel with the cutter members, and one of same is provided with upright studs or prongs I3 for passing through and engaging with foraminous or metal lath stock II, to the end that the same is held in place at one side portion while the blank is formed. These prongs likewise serve to hold the material while it is being severed by the cutting members B and C. The member ,1 is likewise hinged to a top member I4 of the frame, as at l5, parallel with the hinging l2, and when the two members e and f are folded together as shown in Fig. 4, gripping the stock ll between them, they are both swung upwardly into the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 4, which produces a bend in the stock, which is clearly shown in Fig. 5, a view of the completed unit. Suitable locking means F are provided for holding together the members e and f, and same may consist of a swinging arm l6 mounted upon the member 6 and engaging with a keeper ll secured to the member I and projecting through an opening in the member e.
Mounted at the side of the frame. A, opposite that at which the members e and f are mounted, is a pair of V-shaped brackets l8 in which may be accumulated a number of the units G such as shown in Fig. 5.
At the side of the swinging cutter member 0 opposite to the fixed cutter member B, is an extended guide member H between which. and the fixed cutter member the swinging cutter member C is confined and plays. Between that member and adjacent side frame member I are a plurality of transverse bars l9 upon which the ma- 50 terial being cut may be supported.
It will be understood, as shown in Fig. 4, that a plurality of sheets of metal lath or other material may rest upon the members I9 and preferably one at a time is put into position for 55 operation of the cutting means and subsequent forming by the forming means E.
It will also be understood that the roller 9 permits the swinging cutter member C to travel lengthwise of the cutter member B and the guide member D, and such roller being confined between the two gives it a firm fulcrum and purchase to contribute to the cutting action.
Having thus disclosed my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a machine of the character disclosed, an elongated fixed cutter member, a guide member adjacent thereto, and a swinging and traveling cutter member having a fulcrum between said fixed cutter member and said guide member and permitting cooperation of said cutter members and travel of the swinging cutter member with respect to the other cutter member.
2. In a machine of the character disclosed, an elongated fixed cutter member, an elongated guide adjacent thereto, a swinging cutter member having said three members in substantial alignment,
a cutter member fixed to the other side of the top member, and a movable cutter member mounted on said frame so as to cooperate with the fixed cutter member whereby a sheet of material may be placed on the support overhanging the fixed cutter and be cut and bent without removing it from said support.
THOMAS HENRY FORSHEY.
