c.,v| E BLEU scRAPER Filed July 29. 1935 2 Sheets-Sheet l 6. f zu@ /N VENTOR emmw Patented May 23, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to material moving devices adapted to be moved across a surface to be treated, by al vehicle such as a tractor, for the purpose of scraping up and removing materials. More specifically the invention relates to that class of material moving devices having a revoluble bucket designed and adapted to assume excavating, carrying and dumping positions, and an auxiliary dirt retainingmember desposed forwardly of said revoluble bucket. In my Patent No. 1,891,427 dated December 20, 1932, I disclose such a device, in which the auxiliary dirt retaining memberis represented by reference number 44. It will be noted by reference to Figures 1 and 2 of Patent No'. 1,891,427 that the apron 44 comprises side walls and an inclined forward wall which has no bottom portion that will serve as n earth supporting .bottom member. Fur- .t more, as shown in Figure 4 of Patent No. 1,891,427, which is the loading position, the apron is automatically raised and tilted by operation of the control mechanism to cause the bucket B to assume the position shown and apron 44 will not serve as a material supporting bottom member in this position, and it is therefore an object of the invention disclosed in this present application to so construct, arrange and control the auxiliary dirt retaining member that it will serve as an auxiliary bucket to be loaded in conjunction with the revoluble bucket to the end that a larger load may be obtained with a given amount of power.
Another object of the invention is the provision in a material moving device having a revoluble bucket and an auxiliary-bucket disposed forwardly of the revolving bucket whereby when the revolving bucket becomes loaded materials will move into the auxiliary bucket.
Another object is the provision in a scraper having a revoluble bucket and an auxiliary bucket disposed forwardly thereof, of independently operable control mechanism for each of said buckets.
Another object is the provision in a material moving device of a material carrier comprising, a revoluble bucket provided with a material scraping and receiving edge, and an auxiliary bucket disposed forwardly of said revoluble bucket and arranged relative thereto to be loaded in conjunction therewith.
Another object is the provision in a material moving device of a revoluble bucket, and means whereby said bucket may be revolved backwardly to dump the load.
Another object is the provision in a material (Cl. :iL-129) moving device of a draft frame, a revoluble bucket having a material scraping and receiving edge, an auxiliary bucket disposed forwardly of said revolving bucket arranged relative thereto to be loaded in conjunction therewith and means mounting said revoluble bucket, said auxiliary bucket and said frame about a common axis.
l, Another object is the provision/'in a material moving device of a frame, a main bucket mounted thereon, an auxiliary bucket disposed forwardly of said main bucket and arranged relative thereto, and means continuously acting upon said auxiliary bucket to minimize the tendency to downward movement because of its weight.
Another object is the provision in a material moving device including a main frame; a revoluble bucket and auxiliary bucket; of means whereby the materials in both of said buckets may be dumped rearwardly of the scraper.
Another object is the provision in a material moving device including a revoluble bucket and an auxiliary bucket disposed forwardly thereof and arranged relative thereto to be loaded in conjunction therewith, of power operated control means to rotate said revoluble bucket, hold said bucket stationary in a selected position, or release said bucket for revolving movement.
These and other objects are attained by the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the preferred form of the device in load carrying position showing latch mechanism for latching the two buckets together for rear dumping.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary plan view of the device as shown in Fig. 1 showing a plan view of said latch mechanism.
Figure 3 is an enlarged plan view of the rear dumping latch member.
Figure 4 is an enlarged side view of the rear dump latch member.
Figure 5 is a side elevation in section of the revoluble bucket shown in Figures 1 and 6.
Figure 6 is a side elevation of the device in the act of tilting rearwardly.
Figure 'I is a side elevation showing how the materials from both buckets are dumped rearwardly.
Figure 8 is a side elevation showing the revoluble bucket in upside `down position and the auxiliary bucket in normal position.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference orrthe drawings, F is a frame comprising side arms 3, 3 connected at their for- Connected to the cross beam and extending forvwardly therefrom is a draft beam I adapted at its forward end for connection to a draft device, such as a tractor. Extending between the rear ends of side arms 3, 3 and journaled thereon is a revoluble bucket 4 provided at its opposite ends with two hoods 5, 5 forming a part of the revoluble bucket and open on their under sides within these hoods are rolling supports 33 mcunted upon bearings supported in the ends of the revoluble bucket as at 6, 6, and in the inner sides of the hoods 5, 5. The forward side of the bucket at opposite ends thereof is provided with the usual runners or shoes 8, 8. Secured at the forward lower edge of the bucket is a material scraping and receiving edge 9. 'I'he forward walls I2, I2 of the hoods may be formed whereby the scraping edge 9 extends only between the inner walls of the hoods and short scraping edges KII, II are attached to the lower portion of the forward walls I2, I2 of the hoods. When the forward walls, I2 of the hoods are formed as in Figure 5the scraping edge 9 extends the entire distance between the bucket head plates I3, I3. Secured to each of the bucket head plates I3, I3 is a pair of stops I4, I4 and I5, I5 comprising outwardly projecting pins carrying rollers.
Disposed forwardly of the revoluble bucket and arranged relative thereto is an auxiliary bucket I6 open at its rear side and having rearwardly extending arms II, I1 journaled at their rear ends on said revoluble bucket in common with the frame F. Mounted on the rearwardly rextending arms II at I9 is a latch member I8 adapted to engage the stops I5 on the head plates I3, land having an upwardly extending arm 20 provided at its upper end with a' pull rope 2| extending forwardly to within easyreach of the operator of the tractor for manual operation.
Extending transversely of the frame F and suitably journaled thereon in bearings such as at 22, 23, and 24,` is crank shaft 25 provided at each end thereof with crank arms 26, 26. Pivotally secured at the outer ends of crank arms 26 by pins 21 is the forward ends of control bars 28 pivotally connected forwardly of their rear ends by a pin 29 to the lower end of links 30, 30 pivotally connected at their upper ends by means of pins 3|, 3|, to side arms 3, 3 of the frame F. The rearwardly projecting ends 32 of control bars 28 are arranged and adapted to engage or disengage stops I4, I4 and I5, I5 on the head plates of the revoluble bucket 4.
The lower portion of the forward wall of the auxiliary bucket I6 is provided with a bracket 34. Secured to bracket 34 at 35 is a cable 36. Mounted on the frame F is bracket 31 carrying sheave 38. Cable 36 extends upwardly thence over sheave 3 8 and forwardlyunder a direction change sheave 39, thence toa winding drum unit on 'the tractor` not shown because conventional).
Secured to crank shaft 25 is a crank arml 40 carrying at its 'upper end a sheave 4I. Secured to frame F is direction change sheave 42. Secured to frame F at 43 is a cable 44. Cable 44 passes upwardly and over sheave 4I, thence under direction change sheave 42, thence forwardly to a winding drum unit on the tractor (not shown because conventional).
While no specific showing is made of a control mechanism operated by cables and a winding drum, still it will be apparent to one versed in the art that other means, such as a hydraulic ram mechanism, as indicated in my U. S. Letters Patent No. 1,958,195 may be substituted for the winding drum to draw the cables without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In operation the device is attached at 51 to a suitable draftV device, such as a tractor, to be adyancedacross a surface to be treated thereby. 'I'he revoluble bucket 4 is pivotally connected to the frame at 6 rearwardly of the center of gravity of said bucket so that said bucket 'normally tends to revolve clockwise. The winding drumv-.inot shown) carrying cable 44 is released thus allowing revoluble bucket 4 to rotate forwardly or clockwise causing link 36 and crank arm 26 to swing downwardly and forwardly. When the bucket 4 has assumed a scraping position, it will be adjustablyy retained in position by control bars 28 engaging stops I4. As the device advances while in this position materials will be scraped up by the material scraping and receiving edge. When both buckets are loaded the winding drum (not shown) is operated to rewind cable 44 resulting in swinging crank arm 40 forwardly thus rotating crank shaft 25 and swing links 30 and crank arms 26 rearwardly and upwardly thus raisingv control bars 28 and reversely rotating bucket 4 to the carrying position. In this position the materials may be transported to any desired location. Now the buckets may be unloaded by revolving bucket 4 either forwardly or backwardly. To unload while moving forwardly, the winding drum (not shown) carrying cable 44 is released allowing the control bars 28 till such time as stops I4 have passed the rear ends of control bars 28, at which time the winding drum (not shown) carrying cable 44 is operated to rewind cable 44 and again position the'rear end of control bars 28 in the path of the stops on the bucket head plates. Bucket 4 will continue to rotate forwardly While advancing until stops I5 engage control bars 28. 'Ihus the device is caused to assume a dumping position while moving forwardly and continued forward movement of the device will result in spilling the load. When the load has been discharged, cable 44 is again operated to manipulate control bars 28 and release stops I5, and engage the stops I4. Discharging the materials rearwardly that is, by reversely rotating bucket 4, is usually desired only when the materials are to be dumped into a depression into which it is impractical to drive the tractor and the device. In such cases rear dumping is accomplished as follows: The device is backed up to a point near the rim of the depression. Then pull rope 2| is manipulated to cause latch member I8 to engage stops I5. While holding latch member I8 into engagement with stops I5 as shown in Figure 6, a winding drum (not shown) carrying cable 36 is operated to wind cable 36 and thus tilt the buckets into positions shown in Figures 6 and 7. At this point the lower rear side of bucket 4 will have contacted the ground and the materials in the auxiliary bucket I6 will have spilled rearwardlyas shown in Figure 7. Then vcomplete dumping of bucket 4 is accomplished by Ais continued till stops Il again engageV control bars 28.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent to one versed in the art that I have disclosed a device as substantially fulfills the obiects of the invention as set forth, and while this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device', in practice such arrangement, correlation and construction of parts, members and features may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the class described comprising, a. frame adapted Ito be moved across the surface of the earth, a bucket, an auxiliary bucket disposed forwardly of said first mentioned bucket and arranged relative thereto to be loaded in conjunction therewith, means operably associating said buckets and said frame about a common axis, means pivotally mounting said auxiliary bucket on the pivotal connection of said revolvable bucket with said frame and means operable to cause said device to assume operative and inoperative positions. y
