Description

NI'I'E STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
CHRISTIAN HOLLER, OF ORUMS POINT, AND JAMES MODANIEL, OF WALKER'ION, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN LOAD-BINDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 215,746, dated May 27, 1879; application filed March 18, 1879.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, CHRISTIAN HOLLE ,of Orums Point, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, and JAMES MODANIEL, of Walkerton, same county and State, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hay- Racks; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view representing our invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation, partly in section, of the same. Fig. 3 is an elevation, partly in section, representing a modified form of our invention.
Identical parts in the drawings are designated and referred to by the same letters.
Our invention relates to hay-racks; and it consists in a clasp which embraces the standards of the hay-rack, for holding the bindingpole in position, in such a manner as to automatically resist any upward strain by the pole,
and permit of any lowering or tightening of the same, as will more fully hereinafter appear.
A represents one end of a hay-rack. B is a standard, attached to the front and rear transverse heams of the hay-rack. O is the clasp, constructed larger than the standard, and provided with a hook, c, which receives and retains the binder D, or cord or chains attached to the same.
For economy in constructing the clasp, the hook 0 may be attached at a lowercorner, or the clasp may be made circular or ring-like.
The operation of our invention is as follows: The binder being attached to the hook c of the fore standard, the operator places the other end of the binder under the book 0 of the rear standard and applies his strain to the binder, allowing the clasp U to slide down the standard automatically, securing all strain applied by clamping the standard at any point where any upward motion is given to the binder. The greater the strain applied, the more secure the clasp holds the binder in position.
We do not claim this clasp, broadly but What we do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
I11 a hay-rack, the clasp or loose sliding sleeve 0, provided with a hook, c, in combina tion with the standard 13 and binder D, constructed and operating substantially as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
CHRISTIAN HOLLER. JAMES MODANIEL. Witnesses:
GEO. H. ALWARD, JAMES W. WYKOFF.
