This invention relates to electron discharge devices of the kind having an external anode and a jacket on the exterior of the anode through which cooling fluid may be circulated.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an electron discharge device having a cooling jacket which is easily fitted in position and dismantled.
According to this invention we provide an electron discharge device having an external anode formed with external flanges, a wall encompassing the anode and having edges placed adjacent the edges of the external flanges of the anode, and a ring formed with a recess into which the adjacent edges of the anode flanges and the external wall fit and filled with packing material covering said edges, and means for pressing the ring upon said edges to form a fluid tight joint.
The nature of the invention will be better understood from the following description of one embodiment thereof taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, of which:
Fig. 1 is a part sectional elevation of the external anode and cooling jacket of a double ended electron discharge tube.
Fig. 2 is a half plan View partly in section on the line AB of Fig. 1, and
Figs. 3 and 4 are views showing constructional details.
The external cylindrical anode I has tapered ends 2 and 3 to which glass bulbs 4 and 5, parts only of which are shown, are fused in a well known manner. At the ends of the anode near to the commencement of the tapering are fixed external rings 6 and I with bevelled edges 8. 9 turned outwards parallel to the anode surface. The edges 8, 9 are bevelled on the sides towards the anode. The external wall of the cooling jacket is constituted by a cylinder I2 the edges I5, I6 of which are bevelled on the side away from the anode and fit closely against the edges 3, 9. Over the adjacent ends of the flanges 6, I and the wall I2 are placed rings 20, 2! provided with recesses 22, 23 filled with plastic material 25, 26 which covers the adjacent bevelled edges 8, I5 and 9, I6 respectively. The recesses 22, 23 are formed with inturned edges 24, 24 as shown clearly in Fig. 3 to retain the plastic material 25, 26. Formed integrally with the cylinder I2 are ribs I3, I4 provided with holes to receive bolts 21, 28. The rings 20, 2! are provided with internally screwed recesses to receive the bolts 2.1, 28. A plurality of bolts such as 28, 28, 28", 28 is provided around each of the ribs I3 and I4. The
cylinder I2 is provided with an inlet pipe I! and outlet pipes I8, I9 for the cooling fluid.
In assembling the jacket the cylinder I 2 is slipped over one of the glass bulbs 4 or 5 of the electron discharge device and placed with its edges I 5, I 6 against the edges 8, 9. The rings 20, 2| are then placed with the plastic material 25, 26 over the adjacent edges and the bolts 21, 28, etc., passed through the ribs I3, I4 into the recesses in the rings, and tightened until a fluid tight joint is obtained.
In order to secure more efiicient cooling there may be provided inside the jacket I2, deflectors 29 and 30, each composed for example, of two half shells or several cylindrical segments maintained by two members 3| and 32, 3| and 32' of which the elevation is shown in Figure 1 and a portion of the plane view in Figure 4. These half shells may be connected by bolts such as 34, Figure 4.
The members forming the units of 29 and 30 comprise a series of bosses such as 33. These bosses leave between them a sufficient passage to give the cooling fluid a high speed over the surface of the cooling anode I. Joints each in the form of a torus 35 and 36 of plastic material, for example, rubber, whose section in the plane of Figure 1 or 3 is in U-shape, are placed around deflectors 29 and 30 and force the fluid coming through the tube 11 to pass between the deflectors 29 and 3B and the anode I instead of passing between the deflectors and the jacket l2. These joints are held applied by the pressure of the cooling fluid. Openings 31 and 38 shown in Figure 3 and of which others 31, 31" and 31" are shown in Figure 4, may be provided in the half shells 3|, 3|, 32 and 32', these holes permitting the cooling fluid to exert its pressure on the joints 35 and 36.
In order to dismantle these jackets for exple, for cleaning, the invention provides devices permitting the easy dismantling of the outer jacket without any other mechanical operation than the loosening of the bolts such as 21 and 28. For this dismantling it is suflicient to undo and remove the bolts such as 21 and 28 with a suitable tool, then to remove the rings 20 and 2| by pressing on the jackets I3 or M and taking away the ring thus removed and the outer jacket I2. Grooves l0 and I I are provided in the outer sides of the rings 6, I so that a suitable tool may exert pressure on the remaining ring so that it may be removed.
The deflectors and their accessory members thus become accessible which permits their easy dismantling. Re-assembly is effected as previously indicated.
It will be seen that the dilation of the anode l forces the extremities 8 and 9 of the crowns 6 and 7 more into the joints of plastic material 25 or 26 which thus maintains the tightness. The jacket l2 can thus be made in a rigid manner without being provided with devices adapted to compensate the dilation of the anode.
It is clear that the invention is not limited to the embodiment which has just been described. It is clear, for example, that the manner in which a fluid tight joint is secured between the cylinder l2 and the anode can be applied to a single ended tube, the cylinder l2 in this case being replaced by an outer wall of the jacket which is of similar shape to the anode and encompasses it at a suitable distance therefrom.
