Patented Apr. 11, 1939 PATENT OFFICE COUNTER OR TABLE DISPENSING AND DISPLAY CONSTRUCTION Bertram J. Goldsmith,.Neshanic, N. J.
Application May 24, 1938, Serial No. 209,719
8 Claims.
This invention relates to counter or table dispensing and display constructions and in its more specific aspects is concerned with means for displaying and dispensing ribbons, bindings, tapes and other narrow fabrics.
One object of the invention is to provide an improved counter-Well construction and more specifically to provide a counter-well constructed and arranged in such a way as to facilitate the dispensing of the material therefrom and to improve the display of such material in the well.
Another object of the invention is the provision of counter compartments or wells of the type which are constituted in part by vertical partition walls, the construction and arrangement being such as to obviate the necessity for the blocks heretofore utilized for retaining said compartment walls in vertical position and in compartment defining relation.
A further object of the invention is generally to provide improved means such as store counter wells or compartments for facilitating and improving the dispensing and display of ribbons or other narrow fabrics.
The above objects of the invention and other objects which might hereinafter appear will be fully understood from the following descriptions considered in reference to the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Fig. l is a perspective View of part of a counter display embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the counter wells, parts being removed for the sake of clearness of illustration;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
4 Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2;
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, the dispensing and display construction embodying the present invention comprises, as here shown, a suitable support If! such as, for example, a store counter or table upon which the compartment or Well defining partition walls l2 are,
as is customary, disposed in vertical position.
In accordance with the present invention, the wooden blocks heretofore usually utilized for supporting the compartment defining walls in vertical position are preferably eliminated, and in addition, provision is made for subdividing each compartment or counter well into sub-compartments, one of the latter in each well constituting a supply chamber for the material in the well, and another of said sub-compartments constituting a display chamber for the material to be dispensed therefrom. For this purpose there is utilized in accordance with the preferred form of the invention illustrated herein, table members l4, one of which is removably positioned in each of the counter wells. As each of the members l4 positioned within said wells is preferably of the same construction, only one will be described. Each table member l4 comprises a top l6 of rectangular, here shown as square outline, and provided at each of its four corners with a leg l8. Each of said members [4 may be made of any suitable material; preferably it is made of sheet metal, and in that case legs l8 may be formed integral with top l6 and are preferably of angleiron shape, having, sides 20 and 22 disposed at right angles to each other. It will be understood the vertical wall [2 which defines the compartment or wells are engaged by members l4 whereby the latter serve to retain said members in ver- 9 tical upright position, although it is within the scope of the present invention to provide other means for retaining said vertical walls in upright position. Each table l4 may be made in one piece of material other than metal, for example it may be molded from Bakelite or any other suitable synthetic resin or it may be made of wood or wood pulp.
-As clearly shown in the drawing, the top I 6 of the table I4 is disposed a substantial distance below the upper edges of vertical walls 12 as well as a substantial distance above the top of the counter well or table II) and is supported in said position by legs l8 which are dimensioned accordingly. Preferably, wall I6 is about mid-way between the top and the bottom of the compartment. Said table top forms together with the companion vertical walls of its companion compartment a supply chamber 24 and a display chamber 25. The material to be dispensed from each compartment is housed within supply chamber 24 below wall I6.
As here shown, said material is in the form of a spool or winding of ribbon 28 mounted preferably in horizontal position, that is resting on one of the spool flanges 30. The ribbon or other narrow fabric or other material extends from the supply chamber 24 through an opening 32 in table top l6 to display chamber 26. It will be understood that a suitable quantity of said material will be displayed, in the use of the invention, in said display chamber where the material will rest upon table top l6 which thus constitutes the bottom of said display chamber. Aguide pin 33 maybe provided, as here shown, for guiding the ribbon from the spool to opening 32. Said guide pin is preferably a roller pivoted at its ends 34 and 36 in leg i8 adjacent opening 32 and in a part 38 struck out and downwardly from table top l6.
Provision is made for permitting rotation of spool 28 in supply chamber 24. For this purpose, there is provided, as here shown, a vertically disposed pin 40 which is secured to and depends from wall M, preferably centrally of the latter, for engagement with spool 28 in its central opening 42 whereby said spool is mounted for rotation in a fixed path about said pin. For convenience in inserting or removing member l4 into and out of the well, table top I6 is provided with a finger opening 44.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that the latter may be embodied otherwise than as here shown, and that in the illustrated embodiment certain changes in the construction and arrangement of parts may be made and that certain parts not essential to the broad function of the construction and arrangement may be omitted. Thus, for example and without indicating all of the changes which may be resorted to in practicing the present invention, it may be stated that table M can be made with attached instead of integral leg portions and that the opening for the passage of the ribbon from the supply chamber to the display chamber may be formed otherwise than as here shown, for example, as a notch in edge portion of the table top or by spacing an edge of said top from the adjacent vertical compartment defining wall. Other changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be made and-will occur to those skilled in the art particularly in view of the present disclosure.
Therefore, I do not wish to be limited precisely to the invention as herein shown or described except as may be required by the appendedclaims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and'desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
