1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in toys.
The principal object of the invention is to produce a toy which is novel and one which will, therefore, be attractive to children.
A further object is to produce a device of this character wherein a mechanical movement takes place, thus making the toy travel.
A further object is to produce a device which is inexpensive to manufacture, sturdy in construction, and simple to operate.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this speciiication and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my completed toy;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary cross sectional view showing the spring motor and gearing;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detailed view taken on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary front elevation.
Toys, to be attractive, must not only be novel in design but must also have mechanical movements; and therefore, I have designed a toy in the shape of a figure representing an elephant, but it is obvious that the figure might be any other animal; and the same is being ridden in this particular instance by a donkey.
In the accompanying drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates the body of the animal, and the numeral 6, the head thereof which is rotatable relative to the body 5, the head is connected to a stub shaft 1 mounted in the body 5 and carrying a gear 8 which meshes with gears 9 and II. The head 6 has ears I2 and I3 which are in the form of propeller blades. A motor is shown at I4 which is connected to an eye I5 and to an eye I1 and comprises a rubber band, which lastmentioned eye is connected to the stub shaft l. Wheels I8 and I9 are secured to the legs of the animal so that the same may be rolled over a supporting surface. A iiexible Wire 2| is connected to the gear II and passes downwardly to the Wheel I9 Which it drives. A similar flexible wire 22 is connected to the gear 9 and passes up- 1936, Serial No. 76,206
(Cl. Lifi-4.040
wardly and terminates in a tail 23 of the donkey gure 24.
The result of this construction is that when the head 6 is rotated, the spring or resilient bands I4 will be wound up; and when the head is released and the animal placed upon the floor, the head in revolving will cause the propellers I2 and I3 to pull the animal along the supporting surface, and which will be assisted by the flexible wire 2i connected to the Wheel I9, through the medium of gears 25 and 26, as clearly shown in Figure 1. At the same time, the rotation of the gear 8 will rotate the gear 9 and the Wire 22, thus causing the donkeys tail 23 to rotate and produce a iiapping motion.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to the material, size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
In a toy of the class described representing an animal having a body section and including limbs with Wheels attached thereto, a head section ro tatably mounted upon said body section, propeller blades carried by said head, geared elements mounted in said body section and having a stub shaft fxedly connected in said head section, a second animal body mounted astride said first body section and having a tail capable of being wagged, connections from said geared elements to the tail of said second mentioned animal body to cause the wagging of the tail thereof, and a flexibly operated motor mounted in the first mentioned animal body section and. attached to said geared elements, whereby when said flexibly operated motor is wound through the turning of the head of said rst mentioned animal body, said gears operate to cause the rotation of the head of the rst mentioned animal body and to cause the wagging of the tail of the second mentioned animal body and also to cause the forward propulsion of the rst mentioned animal body.
