Description

J. W. (LGILMAN. Copy-Book Cover.
No. 215,219. Patented May 13, I879.
N.PETERS, PNOTD-UTHOQRAPHER. WASHINGTON, D C
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JONATHAN W. O. GILMAN, OF MALDEN, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT I N COPY-BOOK COVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 215,219, dated May 13, 1879; application filed January 10, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JONATHAN W. O. GIL- MAN, of Malden, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Copy-Book (Jovers and Blotters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists in a supplemental cover for copy-books, &c., adapted to be folded over the top and bottom margin of a book folded back to back, provided with a lower flap, which folds upon the lower portion of the page, and is adapted to form a rest for the hand while writing, and to serve as a blotter and a flap, adapted to lap from the top upon the book and over the under flap, and furished with a supplemental page or flap, bearing slope or other lines, attached to the remainder of the cover near the lower fold, at right angles with the sides.
Various means are used for protecting the cover and pages of copy-books, some of which embrace the additional feature of a blotter; but, so far as I know, no cover has been constructed which is adapted and arranged to inclose the copy-book in the manner herein specified, and to provide a sheet bearin g scale-lines which shall be attached to the cover, to be used as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a cover, showing the leaf bearing the slope or scale line folded below the leaf of the copybook. Fig. 2 illustrates a modification in construction. Fig. 3 is a perspective of a portfolio containing an envelope, and Fig. 4. is a cross-section thereof when closed.
To employ my device, the copy or other book is folded back to back, so that one page only is exposed. It is then laid upon the cover so that the lower flap, a), can be folded upon the lower part of the exposed upper page, when the upper flap, a, is folded downwardly upon the lower flap.
In use the upper flap is moved upwardly and outwardly, leaving the lower flap in position upon the page to perform the offiee of a hand-rest and a blotter. From time to time, as needed, the book is drawn from below the hand-rest.
The flap a bearing scale or slope lines, is fastened preferably near the line of fold of the lower flap, and when in use is inserted in the book immediately beneath the upper page.
The cover may be made entirely of blottin gpaper, or the lower flap only, as desired.
I have described in a pending application a copybook cover like the one herein described, with the exception that the slopeline leaf is not attached, and I therefore do not claim the same in this application.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States A supplemental case consisting of part A, provided with flaps a a, whereof flap a is adapted to fold upward upon and partly cover the book or paper in said case, and flap a is adapted to fold down upon and over the margin of the flap a, and also provided with the supplemental flap a attached in the manner described, whereby a restfor the hand is furnished to the writer, the paper to be written upon may be protected from soilure, and the use and adjustment of under lines are made convenient, substantially as described.
JONATHAN W. G. GILMAN.
