Description
L. 0. PEPPPR'. Harness-Saddles.
No. 214,948. Patented April 29, I879.
IJVY'ENTOR 6 f By ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFIOE.
LEANDER G. PEPPER, OF RED OAK, IOWA, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM L. ALBERT AND OSCAR P. WHITTIER, 0F SAME PLACE, ONE-THIRD TO EACH.
IMPROVEM ENT IN HARNESS-SADDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,948, dated April 29, 1879; application filed February 1, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEANDER O. PEPPER, of Red Oak, in the county of Montgomery, and in the State of Iowa, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Harness- Saddles; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a harnesspad, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete pad. Fig. 2 shows the yoke and jockey detached. Fig. 3 shows the loop and padscrew.
A represents an ordinary stuffed pad, provided with a yoke, B, made, preferably, of sheet metal. This yoke is provided with a flange, I), along each edge, projecting both upward and downward, to give strength to the yoke.
At the end of the yoke B is an opening or recess, a, to receive the end of the metal jockey G. This jockey forms a part of the yoke, and has downwardly-projectin g flanges e, to admit of the skirt D, which passes through the loop F, and then up under the jockey O, and is fastened by means of a pad-screw, 1. This pad-screw has a portion of its shank square, as shown at], .and in the jockey is a round hole, h, with square extension 'i.
The screw is screwed sufficiently tight, and then the jockey slipped up so that the square part i of the hole will fit over the square part f of the screw-shank. The terret G is then screwed through the holes m m in the yoke and jockey, thus holding the jockey to its proper place.
Suitable burrs are arranged in the pad A, for the terrets and pad-screws to screw into. The loop F is formed with a screw, and screws into a burr in the pad.
In place of the loop F, I may use a pad-screw with a pad-screw lock, H, made of sheet metal, with hole constructed the same as the hole M in the jockey. This lock is provided with rivets at the ends, which pass through layer and skirt and clinch underneath.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The yoke B, formed with the flangesb and openings (0, for the purposes herein set forth. I
2. The combination of the metal yoke 'B, formed with the upper and lower flanges b, and openings to at the ends, the metal jockeys O 0, having flanges e e, and the pad-screws I I, having the square shank portion, for connecting the yoke and jockeys to the pad, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination of the jockey 0, having hole It i, as described, the pad-screw I, having part of its shank square, and the pad A, with burr, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of January, 1879.
LEANDER C. PEPPER.
Witnesses:
WILLIAM L. ALBERT, WILLIAM E. YOUNG.
