1 Claim.
This invention relates to gas burners and more particularly to gas burners of the type having a thermostatically controlled pilot associated therewith.
It' is a primary object of our invention to provide a compact arrangement of the main and pilot burners in which the pilot is in close proximity to each of the jets of the main burner.
The invention further resides in certain details of structure and arrangement of parts which facilitate the manufactur e and assembly of the burner and therefore` materially reduce the cost thereof.
The above and other objects and features of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from a consideration o i the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in
which Fig. 1 is a top plan view; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a plan view partly in section of a burner casting.
Referring to the drawings, reference numeral I indicates an annular casting forming a gas manifold 2. The casting is provided with an outwardly projecting portion a providing an inlet passage 4 adapted for connection to a gas mixing tube 5. The casting-I forms an almost complete circle which terminates in a dead end portion adjacent to but spaced from the inlet 4 of the gas manifold 2. Spaced passages 6 extend upwardly through the casting providing communication between the gas manifold 2 Wardly extending burner tubes l.

This construction provides a plurality of long, narrow gas jets which extend substantially radially of the annular casting I.
The casting I is provided with a plurality of inwardly projecting lugs I il which a're adapted to support a tubular member II centrally of the annular casting. The tubular member is provided with outwardly projecting lugs I2 adapted for attachment to the lugs Ill by means of screw bolts I3 inserted through suitable openings in the lugs. The tubular member II has a reduced portion at its lower end forming a gas inlet passage I4, and an enlarged portion at its upper end which is internally screw-threaded to accommodate a safety pilot control control device consists of a screw plug iii, the
device I5. The safety lower end of which provides a seat Il for a safety valve l I9 which projects upward I8. The valve I3 is provided with a stem ly through the plug I6 and is attached to a disc thermostat 2U. The thermostat 2E) is supported in a sheet metal housing 2l, the lower end of which is brazed or otherwise permanently fixed to the interior of the upper portion of the screw plug l, and the upper 5 end of which supports a pilot burner 22.' The screw plug I6 is provided with lateral passages 23, intermediate the ends thereof, which provide communication between the central portion of the screw plug and an angular passage 24. An 10 outwardly projecting annular boss 25 on the enlarged portion of the screw plug I6 is internally screw-threaded to accommodate a discharge tube 25 leading from the annular passage il. The passage 26 lies above the annular casting I, the l5 space between two of the passages 6 being somewhat greater at this point to permit the discharge tube 26 to pass between two of the burner tubes l. A torch supply tube 21 opens into the gas inlet passage I4 below the valve I8 and extends 20 outwardly through the break in the annular casting I formed by the space between the inlet end and the dead end thereof. The tube 21 is provided with an enlarged end portion to accommodate a torch valve 28 which is controlled by a push but- 25 ton 29 which projects outwardly beyond the circumference of the casting I.
A control cock 3l is provided in the discharge passage 26 and a tube 32 leads from the control cock 3l to a thermostatic control valve 33 which 30 may be responsive to the temperature at any desired point as, for example, to the temperature of the water where the burner is used in connection with a hot water heater. From the control valve 33 the gas passes by way of a tube 34 35 to the inlet end of the mixing tube 5.
A. cylindrical casing 35 having an internal diameter corresponding to the external diameter of the annular casting I is attached at its lower end by means of fastening screws 36 to the cast- 40 ing I. Bayonet slots or equivalent fastening means are provided at the upper end of the casing 35 for convenient attachment toi a heater casing or other structure with which the burner is to be used. The casing 35 and the attached 45 casting I therefore provide a complete burner cup to which secondary air is supplied through the annular passage 38 provided between the tubular member 31 and the casting I. Additional secondary air is supplied through lateral openings 39 50 in the cylinder 35.
The pilot burner 22 is of the general type shown and claimed in our copending application Serial No. 108,126, led October 29, 1936, and need not be here described in detail except to point out that it provides a low continuous annular flame slightly above the open upper ends of the burner tubes 'l and in close proximity to each of them. A screw Valve 40 of suiiicient length to extend outwardly to or through an opening in the casing 35 is provided for adjacent the pilot ame.
In the operation of the device it will be understood that when starting from cold the safety valve I isvclosed so that no. gas is supplied to either the main or the pilot burner. The pilot burner is ignited by manually holding the torch valve open by means of the push button 29 and igniting the gas which issues from the torch tube 30 toward the pilot burner 22. 'Ihe torch ame heats the pilot burner housing until the disc thermostat 20 opens the valve I8 and gas is thus supplied to the pilot burner. Gas also thereupon passes through the lateral openings 23 and thence through the discharge passage 26 to the thermostatic control valve 33. If the medium to be heated is cold this valve will be in open position and gas will be supplied through the passage 34 to the mixing tube 5 and thence through the gas manifold to each of the burner tubes 1. Thus the flow of gas will continue until the medium heated reaches the desired temperature at which time the thermostatic valve 33 will close cutting olf the flow of gas to the main burners while the flow of gas to the pilot continues.
While there is herein described but a single embodiment of the invention other embodiments within the scope of the appended claim will be obvious to those skilled in the art.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
A gas burner comprising a hollow casting of substantially circular form providing a manifold, a tubular casing detachably secured to the periphery of said casting, said casting and tube forming a burner cup substantially closed at its lower end except for a central opening, a gas supply tube extending through said opening and supported by said casting, a pilot-controlled safety valve mounted upon said supply tube, a pilot burner mounted above said safety valve, burner tubes extending from said manifold and having jets adjacent said pilot burner, and passaged means extending from a point between said Valve and said pilot burner for conducting gas fromsaid supply tube to said' manifold.
