Description
Patented April 15, 1879.
A W LOOKHART Feeders R01 Thrashing-Maohines.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ALEXANDER W. LOCKHART, OF SACRAMENTO, OALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FEEDERS FOR THRASHING-MAGHINES.
Speeifioation forming pzut of Letters Patent N0. 214,255, da.ted April 15, 1879; application filed August 10, 1878.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER WASH- INGTON LOOKHART, of the oity of Saoramento, State of Oalifornia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Feeders for Thrashing- Maohines, of whieh oho following is a. specifioation.
The objeot of my invention is to construot a maohine by whi oh the grain oan be more evenly fed into the cylinder of a. thrashingmaohine by means of a devi0e whioh shall be simple, light, oheap, and durable, and can be run without theloss of any considerable amonnt of power.
The invention oonsists of a eombination of one or more oscillat-ing doors 01 sweeps worked by Suitable meehanism, so that they will feed the grain that is carried up by the elevator into the cylinder.
In tl1e aocompanying drawings, Figuro 1 shows a seetional side elevation of the machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, showing the moving mechanism.
My deviee aots upon the grain in feeding it to oho oylinder T by means of the osoillatin g door O.
The aetion of the door on the gr-ain is .as follows, to wit: Tbe door O is forced on top of the grain as it is let fall fron1 the elevator I 011 tl1e cylinder T; and asthe motion of C is an osoillation to and from the top of T, as
shown in dotted lines, it is evident that eaelr stroke of 0 will press the grain whioh acoumulates on T down in it, so that it will be tztken hold of and bo fed through t-he maohine.
The upper door, G, being bang loosely on the rod E, is free to swing open 130 ad1nit the gnain that enters 011 the apron w, and is simply used as a, shield to prevent the grain from being thrown against the apron w.
Now, the separate funotions of eaol1 part are as follows The elevator-apron is oarried up and amound by the rotation of the roller I. The grain is carried up on the apron w, whioh would, if aoting alone, tl1row the grain oft on the cylinder T, over which it wonld, in most oases, form an auch, and prevent the cylinder from drawing lt in.
The method of preventing this diffioulty forms the principal part of my invention, the door O being for the purpose of pressing the, grain into the space between oylinder T and ooncave P, so that it will be caught hold of and taken in by tl1e cylinder T. This is acoomplished by the osoillating motion of the door O, as shown in dotted lines; and as the apron w piles the grain upon T the motion of G will cause lt 1:0 be fed into the spaee between oylinder T and ooncave I I do not oonfine myself to any partioular form of door O.
In Fig. 3 is shown the mechanism causing the osoillating motion of tl1e door G, above deseribed.
The shaft J of the roller I is provided With a short orank, b. The shaft d is provided with a relatively longer crank, n. The crank b is oonneeted 130 crank n by the rod m, so that the rotation of orank b will oause an oscillation of crank n, shaft d, a-nd door O, as they are both rigidly oonnected together.
Fig. 2 shows the form and oonstruotion of the maohine, showing the rod E, door G, apron w, roller I on shaft J, worked by holtpulley x, shaft d, and lower (1001, O, and the rod m, oonneoting the two oranks b and n, all being hold in their plaee by the fra-me A A.
I do not confine myself to any particular form or way of transmitting motion t0 the door O by means of oranks b n and rod m, for any equivalent device whereby the osoillating motion o f G, as deseribed, may loe obtained will answer in its plaoe.
In Fig. 1 is shown the device with roller I and doors O G sei: parallel 130 cylinder T, and fixed to the thrashing maohine (not shown) by means of the frame AA; but, if desirecl, the frame can be so formed that the elevator I and door G oan be attached to the machine at a right 01 any other angle t0 the cylinder T and door U, instead of being parallel, as shown.
What I olaim as new isl. The osoillating door C, in combination With the elevator I and oylinder T, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The door G, in oombination with elevator I and oylinder T, substantially as above set forth.
3. The frame A, when nsed in combination With the door O, elevator I, and door G, substantially as and for the purposes above set forth.
ALEXANDER WASHINGTON LOOKHART.
