In France and Germany. August 5, 1935 2 Claimsf (CI. 91-50) This invention relates to means for applying a gum or other adhesive, or for moistening agummed or other adhesive surface, of paper, such as address: or other labels, envelopes and the like.
In apparatus of this character there is pro-- vided a suitable container for the liquid to be applied to the surface of a sheetor web, such as water for moistening an adhesive surface of 2 improved apparatus of this character, andparticularly to provide an improved construction and arrangement means to guide and press to the applying device the sheet or web to the surface of which the moisture or adhesive is to be aP- plied.
It is a further object of the invention to provide an improved roller or rollers for transferring the liquid from the container and for applying the liquid to the surface of the article, such as a sheet or web, and cause the liquid to adhere to the surface of the roller.
Additional objects and advantages of the invention will becomeapparent from the following description in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, which illustrates certain possible forms of embodiment of the invention. I

45 Fig. 5 shows a modified form of embodiment of the apparatus according to the invention and having a one-piece feed and pressure bar for the moistening of gummed envelopes.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawing there is provided a container l in the form of a trough, which is open at the top and adapted to contain the liquid utilized, such as a moi'stening liquid or a liquid adhesive. The means to transfer the liquid from the container and for applying it to the surface of an article comprisestwo rollers 2 and-3, the roller 2 being partially immersed in the liquid in the container and the roller 3 arranged above the liquid with a peripheral portionprojecting above a cover 4- closing the top of the container. Instead of two rollers one rollermaybe utilized, in.which case the roller is arranged. with a peripheral portion engaged in the liquid in the container and a peripheral portion extending above the cover 4.: The cover 4 is either made to be wholly detachable from the container I .(Fig. 2) or it may be secured thereto by a hinge 4a (Fig. 1). It is either-constructed in such fashion that it exposes a portion of the container, which is taken up by the roller 3 (Figs. 1 and 3), or, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, it is furnished with an opening 5 adapted to receive thesaid roller.
Laterally of the roller 3 on the cover 4 there is situated the feeding and pressing device for the articles under treatment. This device in the embodiment according to Figs. 1 and 2 comprises two separate and independent bars Hi, the spacing between which is designated II. This space H enables the-article under treatment to be drawn readily between the bars [0 with the assistance of the finger. In other words the space is provided for the passage of the finger.
The bars 10 do not bear in immediate fashion against the cover 4, and there is provided between the bars and the cover a spacing member l2, which generally speaking will correspond with the thickness of the article under treatment and may be increased or decreased as required by varying the thickness of the bearing plates l3. The spacing between the bars Ill and the Since the envelope to be moistened requires be introduced in a direction endwise and longitudinally of the bar, the bar iii in this case as shown in Figure 5 is mounted or secured in the manner above described only at the one end. Apart from this the feeding and pressing device corresponds with that in Figs. 1 and 2.
In order to obtain a better contact of the article with the transfer roller 3, more particularly, as regards the contacting of the apex of the flap of an envelope with the roller, the bar Iii may be arranged intermediate its length and accordingly opposite the middle of the'roller with a projection 20 extended forwardly from the bar or plate to lightly engage the roller.
To facilitateintroduction of the flap of the envelope between cover I and bar iii the bar may be flanged somewhat along its front edge, f. e. in the form of the wing I8.
In the embodiment according to Figs. 1 and 2 the bars ID are provided-along the edge directed away from the roller 3 with raised wings It to facilitate the introduction of the articles under treatment between the cover 4,- which acts as table for. the articles, and the said .bars. The marginal edge portion of the cover 4 is deflected slightly upwardly, as at H, to'extend-adjacent the roller 3 in order better to direct the paper or the like to the roller 3, as shown in Figures 3 and 4. I i I In Figs. 1 and 2 there is shown a label or the like II, which is located between the bars l and the roller 3 and is passed between-these by hand in the direction of the arrow. By withdrawing the article I3 towards the front the rollers 2 and 3 are caused to rotate, and in this way the liquid from the container i is conveyed evenly upwards and is transferred tothe article owing to the roller 3 rolling over the article.
To cause the liquid better to adhere to the rollers 2 and 3, and accordingly to ensure proper transfer of the liquid to the surface under treatment, the rollers, which are preferably composed of metal (brass or the like), are furnished with longitudinal and/or transverse grooves i0 or other recesses, in or to which the liquid will properly adhere. Or if desired, the rollers may be furnished with'a facing of material serving to absorb the liquid.
, The invention may be employed not only for paper articles, such as address or other labels.

Having nowparticularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is:
1. In means for' applying liquid to the surface of a sheet or web, a liquid carrying trough, means within and for transferring the liquid from the trough having a portion projecting above the trough over which the sheet or web to the surface of which the liquid is to be applied is drawn, and means to guide and cause the sheet or web to be pressed against the projecting portion ofextending laterally from and in the plane of the bar arranged to mount the bar on the trough to have adjustment toward and away from the liquid applying means, and the following marginal edge portion of the bar is flanged laterally of aface thereof to constitute a guiding wing to facilitate engaging a sheet or web below the bar.
