SIMON SELLER, OF CORTLAND VILLAGE, NEW YORK.
lM PROVEME NT IN TOYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,010, dated April 8, 1879; application filed August 30, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMON SELLER, of the village of Cortland, in the county of Cortland and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Trumpets; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention consists of a trumpet or bugle for the amusement of children. It is made of thin sheet metal, having an aperture in the side thereof, which is covered with tissue or silk paper.
Figure 1 represents an elevated view, and Fig. 2 a sectional View.
A is a hollow tube, open at both ends. The mouth-piece, or end of the tube to be inserted in the mouth, is represented by m, and for convenience may be slightly flattened. An aperture is made in the side of the tube A, which is represented in the drawings by the deep black spot 0. This aperture may be of any shape, either round, square, or elongated. Over the aperture 11 a thin air-tight flexible tissue covering, 0, is pasted, which serves as a vibratory organ, this tissue being represented in the drawings in a lighter shade than the aperture b, and usually consists of silk-paper, which is preferable to other materials, not only on account of its suitable vibratory quality, but also on account of its cheapness, and the ease and facility of substituting a new covering over the aperture in case one is destroyed.
By blowing through the tube A, and at the same time humming a sort of a head sound, a musical vibration is given to the paper covering 0 over the aperture b, and a sound produced pleasing to the car.
A bell, B, or some other pleasing form, may be attached to the remote end of the tube; but such attachment is no part of my invention, and is only for the purpose of adding beauty to the appearance of the toy.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A toy trumpet or bugle having tube A,with aperture 1), and the tissue or silk paper covering 0, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SIMON SELLER.
