When the spring is located in the high temperature steam cavity around the valve 1, it is subjected to superheated steam temperatures, which is likely to cause breakage and if the spring becomes broken when located in such cavity, it sometimes fouls the movement of the valve. In the construction set forth, the spring I! is 10- ture because it is located outside of the high temperature because it acts on a plunger on the valve stem I2 which is located in an extension of the casing beyond the drain cavity M. This location also makes it possible to readily examine the spring upon removal of the cap l6 and to readily replace the spring without dismantling the cylinder cock. The valve seat 8 is formed in a ring 8 of heat-treated non-corrosive metal, which is pressed into a socket in the casing and around the ring.
In practice, it sometimes occurs that it is desirable to close the cylinder cock, for example, in the event of abroken steam pipe. It is also necessary to close the cylinder cock when the locomotive is undergoing a hydrostatic test. In order to permit the valve to be held closed, a screw 26 extends, and is threaded, through the cap l and is provided at its outer end with 9, whereby the screw may be turned and at its inner end with a head 28 which is adapted to engage a stem 29 integral with the piston v9 and valve 1. By turning the screw 26, its head 28 will engage the stem 29 and force the valve 1 against its seat. A lock-nut 30 is applied to the outer'end of screw '26 so that the its inoperative wardly flared annular face and the cap is. provided with a correspondingly tapered annular seat against which the face on the head can be forced by the screw. This makes it possible to prevent the leakage of steam around the screw Without the use of packing and by screwing the flared face tightly against the seat.
In practice, it is desirable to adapt the cock so it can be reversibly positioned with respect to the engine cylinders. For this purpose, the offset IQ of the casing is provided with a screwthreaded opening 32 in both the upper and lower walls of the ofi-set I9. A screw-plug 33 is adapted to close one of the openings while a pipe 2! is connected to the other. The plug 33 and the pipe 2| may be screwed into either wall of the casing as desired, so the casing can be reversed with respect to the engine.
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modified within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what We claimas new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In an automatic cylinder-cock, the combination of a casing provided with a drain-port, a piston within the casing, means for communicating boiler-pressure to one side of the piston and cylinder-pressure to the other side, a valve operable by said piston to close spring for opening the valve, a the casing, and a screw in closing the valve, the screw having a head at its inner end provided with an inwardly flared annular face, the cap having a correspondingly tapered annular seat against which the face on the head can be forced by the screw to prevent the leakage of steam around the screw.
