Handling Barrel.
No. 213,545 Patent ed Mar. 25, 1819.
"fl-IZMJW flaw/atom:
NFETERS, PMDTO-LITHOGRAPHER WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE ROSWELL S. CLARK AND JOHN R. WILHELM, OF ADDISON, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HANDLING BARRELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,545, dated March 25, 1879; application filed December 28, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ROSWELL S. CLARK and JOHN R. WILHELM, of Addison, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Handling Barrels and Boxes in Stores; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side view of our improved barrel or box handling device, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, with the counter beneath which it is located taken in section; and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail perspective views thereof; and Fig. 5 is a corresponding view of the socket or step of the lower pivot or shaft of the barrel.
The same part in the several figures is denoted by the same letter.
This invention relates to certain im provements in devices for enabling the handling of barrels or boxes when stored away under the counters in stores; and it consists in the detailed construction of the same, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, A refers to a barrel or cask, located under the counter B, for holding any merchantable article. For convenience and facility in handling the barrel or cask, or lnovin git from under the counter and back again, the following provisions are made.
G is a shaft or pivot, with its lower end provided with a cross piece, a, after the form of the top of a T, whose extremities ccare pointed or sharpened, as clearly seen in Fig. 3, to enable the forcing or driving of the same easily into the barrel or box, in the manner shown in Fig. 1. The upper end of the pivot or shaft 0 is let into a socket in the under side of the counter B, as seen in the latter-mentioned figure. This enables the hanging in position of the upp er end of the barrel or other receptac e.
Dis a bar, with its center coiled or other wise movably fitted around the shaft or pivot O, and provided at its ends with hooks a, a, as clearly seen in Fig. 3, which hooks are pointed or sharpened, and penetrate the barrel or cask on the inside, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and thus assist in securing the shaft or pivot C to the barrel or cask.
The object of making the clamping-bar D movable upon the shaft 0 is to enable it to be adjusted to barrels orcasks of different heights.
E is a plate, with its extremities hooked and pointed or sharpened to permit of its fastening to the lower end of the barrel or box, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
F is a second pivot or shaft, fastened to the plate E, having hooks c, and stepped into a socket, G, in the floor, as seen in the lastnanied figure, to enable the hingin g or pivotin g of the lower end of the barrel or box.
As above intimated, by means of this device the barrel, cask, or box can be conveniently and quickly swung in under the counter and out again in removing its contents, and placing it under the counter out of the way.
Having thus fully describedour invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. Grappling'hooks for holding and turning boxes or barrels, consisting of the pivot or shaft 0, having hooks c at its lower end, adapted to enter the side of the vessel, and at its upper end vertically-moving clamping-bar D, having hooks d, substantially as shown and described.
2. Grappling-hooks for holding and turning boxes or barrels, consisting ofpivots or shafts 0 F, the part (1 having hooks c at its lower end, adapted to enter the side of the vessel, and at its upper end a vertically-moving clamping-bar, D d, and the part F, having the plate E, provided with hooks 0, adapted to enter the side of the vessel, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we hereunto affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
ROSWELL S. CLARK. JOHN R. WILHELM.
Witnesses BENJ. M. BABCOOK, ELWIN WILHELM.
